Atelier Gaasterland There is a deluxe retreat in Oudemirdum. Away from it all, but not back to basics. In fact, the interior of the accommodation exudes so much colorful design that you spontaneously want to change everything at home. More about that later.

Let's start with the route there, because that's where the true relaxation begins. Gaasterland in the South West of Friesland is more wooded and rolling than we are used to in the north and is also the region at its most beautiful. Meadows, the dike along the IJsselmeer, cliffs and the occasional farm. Rest.

You arrive at the holiday home of the gentlemen of Atelier Gaasterland via a long driveway under centuries-old trees. During the weekends, Rik, Iebele and Joop like to exchange the hectic and yet fantastic Amsterdam for the relaxed Oudemirdum, where everything can and should be slowed down. A few months ago they decided that they would like to share this place with others, because they want more people to experience the ultimate feeling of freedom that they experience here every time. The rotten barn next to the house was demolished and a brand new building was built, which, thanks to its sleek design, forms a beautiful contrast with the flower field and trees surrounding it.

Inside you immediately feel that a good dose of love has gone into the interior. Everything has clearly been brought together with time and attention. The men have a passion for interior design and this is reflected in unique furniture and striking details. Anyone who thought that a pink table would look mismatched with yellow, orange, gray and pink chairs was wrong. Here the tall Piet Hein Eek forms the center of the residence and the combination mentioned is completely correct. Thanks to the cast floor, the furniture looks even better and you won't get cold feet thanks to the underfloor heating and the fine rugs. We fell in love with the wardrobe in the bedroom, which was specially made to measure and also forms the headboard of the spacious bed. There is often Frisian art on the walls and the dark wooden kitchen houses only some of the colorful tableware that the owners have collected over time. Nice detail: upon arrival a bottle of white is cold and the Fryske sûkerbôle is ready.

You can stay here for €190 per night all year round absolutely fine, because there is a terrace and a fireplace. Breakfast can be provided on request by the baker in the village and be sure to visit the butcher yourself. If you book now, you can still pack in all the fun Leeuwarden that the whole of 2018 is the cultural capital of the year. But there are also nice addresses more directly in the area, including a bed & breakfast and vintage store It Flinkeboskje in Hemelum and restaurant Omke Jan in Woudsend for three-star apple pie. We celebrated Friesland.
