Bread, coffee & sweets in Athens: the best bakeries and coffee spots
Even before the city is fully awake, the koulouri vendors are standing on their usual corner with a tower of bread rings. For a euro, you can eat one while walking, still warm. That is how seriously the Greeks take their morning. And their coffee, and their sweets: bougatsa with powdered sugar and cinnamon, cut into four pieces with scissors. And so, we take bread, coffee & sweets in Athens just as seriously. These are the best and nicest bakeries and coffee spots in the city.
On the corner by the cathedral, on the ground floor of Ergon Bake House, sits 72H Artisanal Bakery. The name says exactly what happens here: every dough gets 72 hours. You can watch them working on it through the windows of the baking lab. The cinnamon rolls with cheese frosting and the chocolate babka are the classics, but stick around until the evening and sourdough biga pizza comes out of the wood-fired oven. It is deliciously light and airy with burrata and zucchini. Open from seven in the morning to eleven at night.

A trendy one! Neuropistolo means “water pistol”. Aha, this new-age bakery in the city center has a nicely designed space with wood, marble, metal, and blue bricks. There is handmade sourdough, buttery croissants with ham and cheese, focaccia, and good coffee. Mainly takeout, with a few tables to sit down for a moment.
Athens once had sixteen hundred dairy bars. Now there are only a handful left, and this is the finest. Since 1931, you can find waiters here in white shirts and black trousers selling the most delicious sheep's yogurt. It comes in a solid block with honey and walnuts on top. Interesting and definitely worth trying! There is also goat and cow's milk, plus rizogalo, loukoumades from the pan, and a spanakopita that is just as good.

In Pangrati, a few streets from the Goulandris Foundation, opened Monokeros (“unicorn”) an artisanal bakery/patisserie by stepbrother-and-sister Pericles Stamboglis and Eleni Theodosopoulou in early 2023. Slow sourdough, butter croissants (with Épire butter), patsavouropsomo, sugar-free baked goods and occasionally something crazy (croissant with blue cheese or pumpkin).
In the neighborhood Kypseli turns Flake For exactly one thing: bread, bread, bread. Okay, plus all sorts of sweet and savory things to go with it. Top quality, and it’s no coincidence that the nicer neighborhood shops source their bread from here. A real bakery tip for anyone who loves sourdough.
