Valencia as European Green Capital

Valencia as European Green Capital

Valencia is green (as in sustainable), and they are very proud of that (and rightly so). In 2024, they were named European Green Capital, an award for cities with more than 100.000 inhabitants that implement projects to reduce environmental impact and improve quality of life, and it doesn't stop there. By now, more than 150 companies have joined Green Pact Valencia, a strong commitment to the sustainable development of the city. What that means in concrete terms: they must meet strict environmental standards and promote pillars such as biodiversity, green infrastructure, climate, sustainable mobility, and healthy food. To top it all off, you will find numerous restaurants in Valencia affiliated with the We're Smart Green Guide, an international recognition for progressive plant-based and sustainable cuisines. You can find a few of them below, as we believe they deserve a deep bow and a round of applause.

  • Barecito Ayuntamiento – A hip hipster bar with lots of aluminium, a cool logo, and an even cooler menu. Let's be honest: we're totally falling for it. The dishes are simple, but oh so flavorful, and in the evenings it can get so packed that there isn't a seat left. But hey, barecito It also doesn't imply that it's a restaurant, but a bar-bar. And we can tell you: it's a vibe. Barecito Ayuntamiento

To do (kid-friendly)

To do (kid-friendly)

  • Cycling through the city park 'Jardínes del Turia' is a massive hit. blackOnce a river, now a park that runs straight through the city like a 7 km long green artery. Every ten meters, there is a playground, football field, flower bed, fitness spot, picnic area, or hangout. It is lovely to read a book on a blanket or have a picnic. Of course, you can also go for a run – after all, it is teeming with sports enthusiasts. At the end of the park awaits the impressive architectural masterpiece Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències – or City of Arts and Science. Fun for the kids: one of the most impressive playgrounds is definitely Gulliver in 'Jardínes del Turia' where the gigantic giant from the book of the same name lies on his back and where children can clamber on and in and slide down.
  • The beach is very wide, so there is plenty of room to lay down your towel without sitting on your neighbor. Of course, you can also choose a sunbed, whatever you feel like – it is your holiday, after all. Furthermore, there is surfing when the weather permits, and beach volleyball is a big deal. There are many courts on the beach, and locals play fanatically, even professionally.
  • Also more than fun to do, especially when you are in the city for a few days: it Bioparc Valencia. A zoo, although it is more of a park. In fact, it is known as one of the most beautiful zoos in the world. You will find the park just outside the city center, but still within relaxed cycling distance.
  • A stone's throw from Valencia you will find L'Albufera Nature Park, an urban oasis ten kilometers from the city. It is the place where paella was invented (yes, really) and an ideal location to enjoy nature, beautiful dunes, and wetlands with hundreds of bird species. Be sure to stick around until the afternoon, as this area is known for its spectacular sunsets.

Things to do (also with kids)

Things to do (also with kids)

  • You're in the right place for good food in Valencia (you already knew that, but it's good to hear it again). The secret? You'll find it in the huerta (actually La Huerta, but we may say the huarta): the place that supplies the chefs and the rest of the Valencians with their products. Surrounding the city lies a vast green landscape of about 120 square kilometers, full of orange groves, vineyards, rice fields, and olive groves.
  • A visit to the Central market Valencia cannot be missing from this list. Scents from the Huerta and the Mediterranean Sea spread past the more than 250 stalls with fresh produce. In the modernist building – a wrought-iron structure decorated with striking tiles and stained glass – you taste the flavor of Valencia. Tip: be sure not to miss the tapas by renowned chef Ricard Camarena.
  • Museo de los Soldaditos de Plomo (kids-proof) – Here, 85.000 (!) tin toy soldiers are displayed in all kinds of historical settings. Impressive!
  • Museum of Natural Science (kid-proof) – for little budding archaeologists. The museum has life-size skeletons of dinosaurs and other prehistoric types (also very nice for yourself).
