A trip to Norway: must-see locations

Would you like to visit Norway soon, or is the trip perhaps already planned? This Scandinavian country attracts tourists because of its impressive nature, fjords, and mountains. If you are lucky, you might even see the Northern Lights here! From spectacular scenic drives and unique train journeys to vibrant cities, there is plenty to experience in Norway. In this article, we tell you more about the hotspots!

The route of Trollstigen

Are you a hero behind the wheel? Then the Trollstigen route, also known as the Road of the Trolls, is the one for you! The road consists of no fewer than eleven hairpin bends, takes you 106 kilometers through the Norwegian landscape, and has an average gradient of around 8%. Most people start in Andalsnes and drive south from there by car or camper to Valldal: a stretch of about 20 kilometers. Due to the elevation changes you encounter along the way, you will see many different landscapes. From rugged rock faces and pine trees to ice-covered mountain peaks. Please note: in 2024, the route was temporarily closed due to landslides. Therefore, always check whether the roads are open before your trip.

Oslo

Are you visiting Norway? Then you shouldn't skip the capital! Oslo is located in the southeast of Norway, on the northern side of the Oslofjord. The city lies by the harbor and is known for its green parks and wooded areas. You can, of course, explore the city on your own, but there are a number of hotspots that are definitely worth a visit. The beating heart of Oslo is Karl Johans gate, a wide street two kilometers long. But the largest sculpture park in the world, Vigeland Park, is also worth a visit.

The most beautiful train journey in Norway: Flåmsbana

This train journey in Norway was voted the most beautiful train route in the world in 2014! The Flåmsbana takes you from the Norwegian village of Flåm to Myrdal in about an hour, via steep routes and no fewer than 20 tunnels! You travel right through the Aurlandsfjord, where there is also plenty to do. Get off at one of the stations and take a walk, or join a boat trip on the special tourist boat.

The Northern Lights in Tromsø

Have you always wanted to see the Northern Lights? Tromsø is one of the best destinations worldwide for this. The city is located at a high latitude and falls within the so-called auroral oval, which can lead to clear skies and the (possible) sighting of the Northern Lights. You have the best chance between late August and mid-April. In addition, Tromsø has a charming city center with cozy cafes and bars, where you can sit and relax with a view of the mountains and the water.
