Our favorite places (cities, islands, beaches and more) in Greece
Many holidaymakers visit the best beaches on our beloved island Greece. We get it. But apart from the blue sea and white beaches, there are beautiful places everywhere on the island. Whitewashed villages leading to churches on hills with those classic blue domes and a view that will amaze you. You just got to find them. So here's a list of our favorite scenic spots (hotels, islands, beaches and more) in Greece. You're welcome.
The island is an undiscovered pearl and honestly, we don't mind that so much. For once not all those tourists around you, but just being surrounded by locals. We like it too. The only downside is that there is no direct flight to the island, so you are forced to take the ferry. Oh well... Great fun if you're up for an adventurous trip right? Chora is the capital of this island. You are surrounded by whitewashed houses, nice cafes with typical Greek food and a maze of narrow streets. And…Ruins of a Venetian castle from the 13th century.
Meganisi: derived from the Greek words Mega (=large) and Nisi (=island). Is Meganisi a big island then? The answer is no! Meganisi is a small island of only 20 square kilometers southeast of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea. You see a lot of (green) mountains and nature around you. There are nice cafes in the villages and the most famous attraction is the second largest cave in Greece (that is), the Papanikolis.
On the island of Milos you will find beautiful beaches, bays, coves, caves and colorful villages. Okay and… Yes and: Milos is not one of many, this is the island where the famous statue of Aphrodite (Venus) was found (if that doesn't mean anything to you, that statue is now in the Louvre in Paris). But Milos is also special, because it is a volcanic island. And so it also has special places, one of which is Sarakiniko. Sarakiniko resembles a kind of 'moonscape' by the sea. The combination of white rocks, large sea caves, blue sea and sky completes the picture. The sunlight reflects so brightly off the white rocks here that sunglasses are recommended.
Anyone who says sun, sea and style are hard to find in one place has clearly not been to Golden Sun Suites in Nidri (Lefkas). The charming boutique accommodation on the Greek island of Lefkas (Lefkada, as the locals call it) has minimalist design with Greek hospitality. Think: light suites with natural materials, a lovely pool and a view of the mountainous interior that almost makes you forget that the beach is within walking distance. The location in Nidri is just right: quiet enough to relax, but with cozy tavernas and boat trips within easy reach.
best of all: you book via By June. By June provides complete holidays, where you book your flight, accommodation and car rental in one click. This may sound less fun or original, but you are wrong. By June always searches for the most beautiful destinations, unique places and undiscovered gems. You will not get more holiday feeling than this.
Fourni is located in the Aegean Sea and consists of three islands. In the east Agios Minas, in the middle Fourni and in the west Thimena, together they have been given the name of the largest island. His nickname is Fourni 'The Island of the Pirates', because in the Middle Ages the islands, because they are rich in hidden bays and beaches, were used by pirates. Nowadays you can take beautiful walks there. And especially in the town of Thimena, a few kilometers by boat and you are there. Super beautiful and quiet, one that has not yet been fully discovered (and therefore even more fun). A must visit is the monastery on the hill between Thymena and Kiramidou. The blue domed roof of the otherwise white church can be seen from a distance when you arrive. But be prepared/ good to know: if you want to spend the night you will have to seek accommodation with 100 locals and rooms are offered here and there in the summer.
Katapola is the island's main port and is built around a sandy beach in the middle of the bay. A truly picturesque fishing village in the Cyclades. You will find the Byzantine church among the beautiful whitewashed village houses. If you follow a walking route from the village, you will find remains of the ancient city of Minoa. The view from this place is beyond beautiful!

You will find one of the most beautiful bays in Greece on the island of Corfu. The small bay consists of pebbles and stretches of sand. There are three pubs that are open all summer season and have a beautiful view of the coast. At the Nikolas Taverna you can get a nice cup of Greek coffee and mussels – yum. The bay is mainly surrounded by lots of greenery.
The island of Halki is so small that Nimporio is the only (port) village on the island. Nimporio is one of the few villages in Greece that has rainbow-colored houses along the coast. It is located near the ancient capital of Horio, where ruins from the 15th century can still be found.
The island of Iraklia is another small island that is easy to miss. The population counter stands at 150 people, ha! And because of this you also miss the harbor and the largest village on the island: Agios Georgios. We think it's a shame. Most of the residents' houses overlook the beautiful Aegean Sea and there are a handful of nice restaurants and bars on the coast.
We linger a while at the small island of Iraklia. And guess what? The village of Panagia is even smaller than Agios Georgios. But the village used to be the largest settlement in Iraklia and was surrounded by a lot of agricultural land. And some houses still have their traditional baking ovens in the courtyards, how nice!

The Kastellirozo island is a somewhat better known island among travelers. It is located a few kilometers off the coast of Turkey. Above the harbor there are steps that are quite winding, but provide a beautiful view of the surroundings. Kastellirozo is the only village on the island and is a real pastel wave of houses emerging from the sea.
Klima is a small fishing village with the photogenic syrmata that you only find on this island. They are traditional fishermen's houses along the water's edge. The colorful doors of the houses are, as it were, storage places for the boats built into the rock. You can experience for yourself what life is like in this village by renting a house through Airbnb. We like it.
Plaka is the capital of it picture a perfect island of Milos. The houses are built in the typical style that we find oh so beautiful in Greece. Whitewashed houses with blue domes and windows. The village is close to the ruins of a Venetian castle that once protected the inhabitants from pirates. You will also find nice cafes and bars here.
Chora is the bustling capital of the island of Naxos. There is always something to do here. The traditional white Cycladic houses can also be found here. Okay, if you go here, you should actually go to Portara. We can hear you thinking, what is that? Portara is a huge doorway to the ancient Temple of Apollo, which was built around 522 BC but never finished. And of course there is a legend to this, but there's only one way to find out, ha!

Okay, this is and remains the classic among the famous Greek islands. The village of Oia nestled along the cliffs is so incredibly cute. The whitewashed houses lead to blue-roofed churches and there are numerous secret alleys to discover that take you from the busy streets to spectacular views of the sea. And those oh so beautiful sunsets, ah mai!
Syros is also one of those undiscovered pearls in Greece. And the village of Ano lives up to that reputation, because it is so wonderfully quiet here compared to nearby Mykonos and Santorini. It is located on a rocky hill built in the 18th century and due to the narrow paths you can only explore the village on foot. We like.
Apollonia is the capital of it foodies island of Sifnos and actually consists of several small villages. Perhaps you can already guess the story behind the city's name. The village owes its name to the Greek god Apollo, who used to be honored here. Here you will find many stairwells, narrow alleys and churches with blue domes. Many houses have a courtyard garden that is really true Pinterest p is because of the beautiful flowers. On the roofs and terraces of the villages you will find many nice restaurants and bars, but the real ones eye-catchers remain the special churches.
Another village where you can only walk, because cars are not allowed. Admittedly, we actually just like that. Kastro is located on a cliff overlooking the island of Sifnos. The village is surrounded by ancient ruins of an old castle and there is a nice walking route along the coast towards the village of Chrysopigi. If you go here, you should also go to the Church of the Seven Martyrs (it sounds quite heavy, we know), but the path to it is just so impressive. And as a bonus, it also feels like you're in the Mamma Mia movie. Oh, here we go again!

Ermoupolis is the capital of the Cyclades and, like Ano Syros, was built by the Venetians, making the city an Italian cool has: squares, large villas and old pink buildings. A city with history. See for yourself!
The port town of Yialos on the small island of Symi consists mainly of colorful villas on the coast on a hill. The whole place is a national monument with 500 steps leading up the beautiful cliffs to the nearby village of Chorio. Very impressive!
Little Venice is one of the most romantic places on Mykonos island. Here you will find elegant old houses located on the edge of the sea, but of course also classic whitewashed houses. The sunsets here are truly spectacular. There are many nice shops and restaurants here on the water and they also have Cycladic windmills here, how nice!
