Hanseatic city of Elburg: the hotspots for food, drinks and to do's

An ode to the Hanseatic city Elburg, where it feels like you've stepped into a postcard. A quick holiday in your own country? Perhaps not the first city you think of, but do it now: a visit to the (almost) square fishing town of Elburg. A city where time has stood still can be negative or positive. In the case of Elburg it is the latter. The catering industry has moved with the times, but the medieval details have remained.

And therefore 10 points for it the Hanseatic year giving us another reason to visit Elburg. 100 points for walking through the medieval city gate and seeing all the details of the former fishing town. And 1000 points for convenience, which contributes to the holiday feeling: getting lost is almost impossible due to the straightforward street plan (thank goodness for those who have the same sense of direction as we sometimes do). Below you will find the hotspots for food, drinks and to do's in the Hanseatic city of Elburg.

The 'Kleur de Hanze' event is on from December 22 to 30! And that's quite a teamwork project, because everyone can participate! You download a coloring page, color it (or let the kids do it) and then you upload it again.

If your drawing has been selected to be projected on the Hanzepand, you will be notified via the email you provided when uploading (you will receive that email sometime in mid-December) and you will immediately know when and where your artwork will be projected. be!For example at the Vischpoort in Harderwijk or the City Hall in Doesburg. Every day, a building is highlighted with projections in each of the nine participating Hanseatic cities between 17:00 PM and 23:00 PM.

Fishing at Bottermuseumwerf De Hellege

Fishing at Bottermuseumwerf De Hellege

To be honest, we fall in love with fishing towns in both the Netherlands and abroad. It's nice if you don't have to leave the country for some fishing. Then you should visit Elburg Bottermuseumwerf De Hellege. The museum and the wooden boats in the harbor next to it keep the memory of Elburg's fishing past alive.

Fishing history. Due to its location on the Zuiderzee, Elburg, like the other nine Hanseatic cities in the eastern Netherlands, became extremely wealthy through this trade.

Lunch - De Bakkersmolen

Lunch - De Bakkersmolen

You can have a nice lunch in Elburg at De Bakkersmolen or at Aan de Gracht. Both special locations with good food. Bee The Bakkersmolen you will find - all under one roof in an industrial building - a brasserie, bakery, mill, ice cream factory and chocolaterie. So order fresh and artisanal fresh bread and the tastiest specialties from the region. Inside you have a cozy homely atmosphere, so it could be that your lunch spontaneously turns into a drink with, of course, an accompanying snack board.

Aan de Gracht

Aan de Gracht

Or join us Aan de Gracht. Beautiful historic building on the water with a classic menu: a ball sandwich, fries, stew or large bowl of soup. Nothing crazy, but good. Aan de Gracht also has a number of vegan dishes, so you can bring the whole group here. The restaurant offers daytime activities to people with disabilities in the kitchen and on the floor. After lunch? Then of course you walk into the associated brewery!

Shopping - EEF & Co

Shopping - EEF & Co

This is what a store used to look like, we think. Bee EEF & Co you can shop typical old Dutch products (and yes, a few newfangled ones, but with the feels from the past). Think of your thumb drop and cinnamon pillows, but also traditional soap from the soap factory, linen in the style of grandmother's time, handmade Bunzlau Castle tableware and more of those nice things for the home. Good place for gift inspiration too!

Dinner - Behind the Gate

Dinner - Behind the Gate

Next to the only surviving gate tower in Elburg you will find Restaurant Achter de Poorte. The cuisine is French-Mediterranean with an occasional Asian touch, so you get things like lemon sole with bulgur and hollandaise or open ravioli with celeriac and shiso. The people at Achter de Poorte regularly change the menu and create a fixed monthly menu every month: for a fixed price you get a glass of bubbles, amuses, wine menu and five dishes. So you can come back every month and be constantly surprised.

Overnight stay - Boutique Hotel Elburg

Overnight stay - Boutique Hotel Elburg

Spending the night in Elburg? Call at Boutique Hotel Elburg it is. A handsome hotel in a monumental building in the heart of Elburg, with bright rooms in all shades of white/cream/beige. Next door you will find the “living room of the hotel”, Stadscafé de Tapperij. Very good place to taste some (local) beers or sit down for a High Wine. Everything, of course, in a Hanseatic atmosphere, because the design of the Tapperij is like that of a trading ship from the Hanseatic period.
