It is Deventer – you can sleep at hotel Finch x restaurant The Lemon Tree
Picture this: a young woman, somewhere in her twenties, starts shaking your cocktail, beaming. A cocktail menu prefers not to be shown, because she wants to create something personal. "What flavors do you like?" When asked, she let us know that she wanted to apprentice Tess Posthumous, the most famous shaker in our country...
We are not in Berlin, New York or Rotterdam, but in the (otherwise fantastically beautiful rock and roll) cocktail bar from Hotel Finch in…drum roll… Deventer! With that picturesque, cultural city center and super nice shops (Antiques! Music! Books! Art!). Currently not accessible due to corona, but that will happen again.
Hotel Finch already opened its doors 1871. Then it was called Hotel de Keizer. After 50 years it became an office building. Now, 150 years after the first opening, it is a hotel again. Someone with a good eye did the furnishings; warm velvet chairs and sofas in cozy sitting areas, an open kitchen. Original lamps everywhere, an inviting bar and cool art. It is the kind of hotel that surprises you outside the Randstad, so incredibly hip (no offense intended, non-Randstad residents).
When you enter the room there is vinyl playing. We like. A bottle of wine on the table. Mini Tony's Chocolonely by the bed. Nice shower stuff. They understand how to spoil your guests here. We have a mezzanine and sleep upstairs. There is a large TV on the wall both downstairs and upstairs, on which you can also watch Netflix. For those without a TV at home, it is certainly a plus.
We take a romantic walk through the old city center, decorated with many lights, which is divided into eight quarters. In addition to the regular chains, you will see many authentic shops in the narrow streets. A great place to shop for original gifts. Deventer is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands with a history dating back to 877.
Back to the hotel. Because the enthusiastic and sweet employees of Hotel Finch have arranged a dinner in the room of none other than The Lemon Tree restaurant. It had been floating around for a while; you MUST eat here once. And now they have come up with something so cool; 25 courses for 25 euros per person. For home (because corona). All small snacks to share. It won't be long before this restaurant gets a star, because the food is innovative and incredibly good. We eat black gazpacho, crab pate, quail with lentils and horseradish, mocha panna cotta and a lemon bavarois that really looks like a lemon (and 20 other special dishes). They are now entering into a collaboration with the Librije, so if you like special taste sensations, book! If you're late, don't worry, they always organize innovative food adventures. And if The Lemon Tree is allowed to open its doors again, we will definitely go there again. Then we shop like crazy in the nice Deventer boutiques, take the ferry across the IJssel for fun and sleep in a super nice room at hotel Finch. We can't wait.
