Ten minutes west of Palma, on the Spanish island of Mallorca and on the coastal road towards Andratx, stands an impressive building that looks like a sixteenth-century mansion, but actually dates back only to 1948. The architect built it as a hotel in a restrained regional style: the proportions of the Palmese city palaces, but with comfort. Since 2002, it has been owned by the Spanish group Hospes and is a member of Design Hotels. The hotel consists of two parts: on one side the Palacio building with 29 rooms right by the sea, and on the other side the Natura building at the 'back' with another 22 rooms. Don't think for a moment that these are the 'lesser' rooms: a number of them have their own plunge pool and are actually the most beautiful of the bunch. The two parts are connected by an underground passage that runs through the garden, which sounds more convenient than it is: it is more of a walk than a connection, and that is exactly the intention.

Although the impressive infinity pool – naturally – the epicenter of the hotel. The swimming pool sits on the rocks above the sea, and from the pool you can step straight into the seawater. There is no beach: it is a rocky coast with a ladder. Those who want sand can drive ten minutes to Illetes or Cala Major. Also great.

Plus points for the hotel spa: a number of treatment rooms are located in the rock caves beneath the hotel, behind stone arches above the water. Furthermore, there is a sauna, hammam, jacuzzi, an indoor and outdoor pool, and a solarium. During the summer season, treatments continue until midnight – we like that. Also nice is Restaurant Maricel with a sea view. Breakfast and dinner receive mixed reviews: for a serious dinner, you are better off in Palma. It is also only a fifteen-minute drive.

From May 1st to October 31st, children aged 2 to 12 are not welcome, which is good to know. They are welcome the rest of the year. It takes about 25 minutes to get there from the airport, and the hotel can arrange a private transfer if desired (around €115 one-way). One recurring point in guest reviews is that the coastal road runs above the hotel and is audible in some rooms. When booking, ask for a sea-facing room; this can easily be done via Booking.com.
