Hotel Nassau Breda
If the city of Breda is proud of one address, it is Hotel Nassau Breda Yes. The fairly new hotel – centrally located in the city and open since mid-2016 – is housed in a former monastery complex, complemented by a striking piece of new design. Sounds un-Breda-esque, doesn't it? That's right. And it is, at least: if you primarily associate the Burgundian Brabant city with exuberant party bars and traditional pubs. But that is Breda only (thank goodness (are the traditional pubs and party bars still there?) No, the city received an upgrade on all sorts of fronts: a new station, countless top-notch hospitality venues (it is almost impossible to keep track), an upgrade of the city center (Breda was allowed to call itself the best city center in the Netherlands in 2017 and 2018; no idea what other benefits come with that, but it sounds nice), and when the whole of the Netherlands – quite rightly – took nail polish hero Tijn to their hearts, people started to love Breda just a little bit more. What does that have to do with Hotel Nassau Breda? Absolutely nothing. Although the arrival of Nassau has certainly contributed to the growing love for the city.

Until 2016, there were indeed quite a few nice places to stay in Breda, truly, but they were more on the level of cozy and informal than suitable for accommodating a fancy (business) guest. Not a big deal, but certainly a loss for a city. Enter Hotel Nassau Breda. The hotel, part of the American Marriott group (you wouldn't guess it), is a serious and ambitious player with 94 rooms housed in a tastefully renovated former monastery. You enter via a quiet side street off the main shopping street, directly opposite the Barones, the equally upgraded covered shopping center. High walls, a stately lobby with friendly, smiling ladies (a bowl of gingerbread cookies within easy reach), and attractive lounges on either side of the hallway, one of which is flanked by – in our opinion – the best spot in the entire building: the atmospheric bar. From those two (very handsome!) lounges, you look out over the cobblestones of the city center, and there is nowhere better in Breda to retreat with a cup of tea or a glass of wine. Oh, and did we mention that dogs are welcome? Another 10 points added.
The hotel itself is a crawl-through-sneak-through complex with stairs, corridors and turrets where Franciscan sisters once walked around in starched hoods. They are regularly reminded of by modern art. Sexy nuns and classic still lifes flashily photographed.
The American aspect of the club is reflected in the rooms: they are large, mega-comfortable, luxurious and… Well, also very American. Commercial. We might have missed a coffee table book and a flower here and there. The coziness we are used to from Breda actually. Let that be the only comment, as it will be a ball again the next morning during breakfast: the buffet is set up in a truly beautiful mezzanine of the neo-Gothic chapel where sunlight falls through high stained glass windows. Under the vaults you sit down in beautiful pink velvet seats from which you can peek into the showpiece of Hotel Nassau Breda: the banquet room that belongs to the Liefdegesticht restaurant, the center of the old monastery. That part was retained, although equipped with some modern gadgets. A dream of a wedding location, that speaks for itself. You would almost forget that breakfast is also worth it: fresh fruit in abundance, sweet and savory and all the juices you could wish for. Great stuff to get rid of the hangover (remember the hotel bar or party cafes).
