There are hotels where you arrive with a list of things to see, do, book, and check off. And there are hotels where that list disappears resolutely into the fireplace upon arrival. HYLL, deep in the Cotswolds, is one such hotel. Surrounded by rolling greenery and tranquility, lies this 16th-century manor house, reinvented. The house feels like someone's. Someone with exceptionally good taste. And so, in this article, we'll continue to rave about Hotel HYLL in the Cotswolds.

Upon arrival at HYLL, you'll encounter a classic Cotswold country house with honey-colored bricks. Those who can afford to step inside will find themselves in a country house that evokes Scandinavian charm. Youth Studio (in collaboration with Tim Groom Architects) designed the house, incorporating limestone walls, weathered wood, linen, soft tones, and materials that are designed to live and age. Warm, layered, and anything but sterilely minimalist.

Check-in is informal, via the stylish boot room, complete with boots and coats for those who still want to explore the countryside. Afterward, the house unfolds like a maze of rooms: eight in the main building, the rest spread across charming outbuildings of the same yellow stone. A fun fact: poet T.S. Eliot wrote the first part of his novel here in the 1930s. Four quartets.

The rooms are deliberately kept calm, with oak wardrobes lined with linens, quiet reading nooks, Naturalmat beds, bathrooms with Verden products (including a fragrance specifically for Hyll), Dyson hairdryers, and no complicated lighting systems. The larger courtyard rooms are ideal if you're traveling with a dog or children, and have a lounge or garden. Windows everywhere frame the landscape. Spread throughout the house are three lounges, each with fireplaces, deep sofas, throws, board games, and a record player with a carefully curated LP collection. Order a bottle of wine and it arrives on a silver tray.

The rooms contain surprisingly helpful "Do Nothing" guides with instructions. Should you still be looking for something to do, there are in-room meditations, breathing exercises, and sound baths, as well as a partnership with Borzoi Books for a reading menu and literary dinners.

 

The restaurant is the beating heart of the place. Chef Mark Coleman cooks with local ingredients from nearby farms, mills, and distilleries. During the day, these are light dishes—well, light, as they say here. The Hereford beef sandwich with horseradish is apparently a favorite. In the evening, it gets warmer and more exciting with dishes like lamb from Briar Hill Farm and cod in clam chowder.

Breakfast is included: a full English, pancakes, or Turkish eggs with crispy flatbread. Breakfast in bed? Yes, please! Check-in and check-out are flexible, and the service is smooth and relaxed.
