Skiing and Feasting: Winter Sports for Culinary Enthusiasts in Livigno, Italy

Skiing in LivignoItaly offers that extra touch of luxury that will give your ski holiday an extra boost. This mountain village was completely blocked by snow until the 50s, and is now a destination that will host the Winter Olympics in February 2026, featuring freestyle snowboarding and skiing. In addition, it the place to be for culinary winter sports enthusiasts.

But literally everywhere you go, you can find incredibly good (and affordable) food. The Italian wines you secretly order during lunch are top-notch. The village is full of charming bars and restaurants, it's a true shopping paradise, and there are plenty of cozy chalets to rent with the family, as well as the cutest boutique hotels. Add to that the super-friendly service and a ski area accessible to all levels. On the slopes, you'll also find cozy mountain huts for a hot chocolate.

Vetta Hotel

Vetta Hotel

You sleep at the Vetta Hotel, a small boutique hotel with eighteen rooms overlooking the mountains. The rooms are exactly what you'd expect on a winter sports holiday: plenty of oak, a cozy duvet so you can sleep with the window open and the fresh mountain air, and a spacious rain shower where you can warm up wonderfully after skiing.

Breakfast at Livigno Dairy has everything you could wish for: fresh fruit, fresh cheeses, local hams, and all sorts of eggs freshly made for you. You'll be completely ready for a long ski trip. The hotel is also stunning from the outside: fully clad in wood and superbly centrally located, just a short walk into the village. Bonus points: it's across from our favorite wine bar. Vino & Co.

Winter sports

Winter sports

Skiing and snowboarding (duh), a delicious lunch on the slopes in between, and then back on the slopes. What's for dinner? The cuisine in Livigno is typically Alpine-Italian: think pizzoccheri, sciatt (fried cheese croquettes), polenta with game, bresaola, and homemade ravioli. In short: the perfect base for some more skiing.

The ski area isn't huge yet, and because Livigno is located in a valley, you can practically go up and down almost anywhere without getting lost. You can't currently ski to the other side of the mountain. If you do want to, you can easily reach it with a short bus ride. And good to know: starting next winter, a connection will be created between the two sides of the mountain, so you won't need the bus anymore.

Alpaca & llama walk

Alpaca & llama walk

This is really a must do when you are there. The owner of Agriturismo La Tresenda is super sweet and was given an alpaca by chance from a friend about twelve years ago. This gradually grew into more animals, and he now has an alpaca farm with about seventeen alpacas and llamas, as well as pigs, chickens, beautiful horses, and donkeys.

The property is an agriturismo, so you can also stay overnight. There is a restaurant and bar, a sauna and a outdoor hot pool. During the day, you can walk and cuddle with llamas and alpacas. Our favorite alpaca was TJ. We were simply given a leash to walk with him. 'Okay, see you in half an hour.' Uh... okay. Just a regular Tuesday with an alpaca on a leash. Let's go

Fat biking

Fat biking

Fat biking Riding along the piste and a thick, snow-covered forest path along the river is also a truly special experience. You'll cycle through the snow for about two hours, and don't worry: they're electric fat bikes, so it's not that strenuous, but it is a wonderful outdoor ride along the Val Federia valley. We rented our fat bikes from Sport Azzurro, and you'll also have a super sweet guide who will take some Instagram-worthy photos and videos of you along the way.

Spa day at Aquagranda

Spa day at Aquagranda

For a spa day go to AquagrandaNote: it's a large spa with all kinds of saunas and steam baths, but you can also take exercise classes and much more. You can easily spend an entire day here. On Wednesdays, special Wellness Wednesday events are held here, where you can share sauna rituals with others. Prefer a bit more peace and quiet? Then go on a different day.

There is also a daily program. We tried the hottest infusion there is – prepare yourself, because it is truly a experienceIce balls are thrown onto the fire, there's dancing, aromatic scents are released, and the light changes to disco lights with rousing music in the background. Intense? Yes. An experience? Absolutely. Tip: join us afterwards for a five-course dinner at the Aqua Alpine Restaurant.

The village

The village

The village is full of shops. Are you missing an item for your ski outfit? Buy it here, because the options are truly overwhelming – and it's also duty-freeYou'll also find all sorts of delicious perfumeries, Calzedonia, and much more.

During the Christmas season, the village is filled with Christmas market stalls, fire pits where you can drink hot chocolate and roast marshmallows, and festive lights everywhere. The atmosphere is incredibly cozy: everyone sits outside on the terrace with an Aperol Spritz, and there's live music. Oh, and! We après-skied at StaletThink typical après-ski music, costumed dancers, karaoke, and above all, a lot of fun.

Best for last: where are you going to eat? The choice is huge, but these are tested & approved.

For lunch go to Rifugio Costaccia. Book here on the second floor. You can ski there, and if you don't ski, you can take the gondola up. It's actually a bit fine dining On the slopes: the chef worked in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Our favorites? All the daily specials, but especially the ravioli with fresh truffle. Also a must: the apple strudel and the homemade limoncello.

For dinner, choose typical winter sports restaurants (lots of wood and colorful rugs) such as The Calcheira en ErmineLa Calcheira is a bit more upscale, but both are equally delicious. And get used to it: after every meal—lunch or dinner—you get a house liqueur.

Do you really want a night out? Then go eat at Mo He Boutique HotelThey have an amazing wine cellar here (where you can also reserve a table) and a chalet that has literally been dug out of the ground and placed under the restaurant, where you can also dine.
