Garnwerd aan Zee, Garnwerd

Garnwerd aan Zee, Garnwerd

We love that holiday feeling. And so we take a trip to Garnwerd. Where to? Garnwerd. Correct. (10 kilometers from the city of Groningen). Admittedly, “by the Sea” is not entirely true. Garnwerd aan Zee is located on the Reitdiep. No delusions of pride! No, a tribute to the past when, until 1877, the water that flowed along here still knew ebb and flow and it was a busy route navigated by trading and fishing ships. You know that again? Garnwerd has a beautiful terrace on the water, a jetty and a small sandy beach. And yes, it really gives you that desired holiday feeling. When the sun shines. Don't worry, you can stay indoors in bad weather. You can relax just as well by the fireplace with a view of the water thanks to the glass front.

Backhuys - Winschoten

Backhuys - Winschoten

Do you really want to get to know (east) Groningen? Then join us at Backhuys in Winschoten. Backhuys is located in a former bakery and has been transformed into a small but nice restaurant, where you immediately feel at home. Not least because of the friendly staff. By means of slow cooking, where fresh (and honest!) regional products are of paramount importance and excellent advice on suitable wines, you can taste the best of Groningen.

Oh and you immediately learn a good word of Groningen, because the dishes have beautiful names such as: “Loagjestoarte van knoln”, “Dik doet in 't Backhoes” and “Oet mien toentje”.

Op up in the air Backhuys!

The Basilica, Appingedam.

The Basilica, Appingedam.

An evening of delicious dining at a special and attractive location? De Basiliek Appingedam is your place. The Basilica is located in the St. Nicholas Church of Appingedam. The church has been beautifully renovated while retaining the authentic details (incredibly beautiful stained glass windows all around you). The Basilica has an extensive menu, something for everyone.

If you are adventurous, you can also be surprised by the chef with a 3-, 4- or 5-course dinner and a matching wine arrangement.

The Basilica is just one of those places where everything fits together: the atmosphere, the interior, the menu, the staff... A big tip.

Pavilion Flonk, Oldambtmeer, Finsterwolde

Pavilion Flonk, Oldambtmeer, Finsterwolde

To be fair, here in Groningen we are generally quite down-to-earth and even a bit skeptical. Even when a new restaurant opens. The “see-the-believe” idea. But this is one that really makes us excited: Pavilion Flonk. Located in Finsterwolde on the Oldambtmeer, about 30 km from the city of Groningen, Flonk provides the ultimate holiday feeling. And that's what you want. And good food of course. You want that too. And a good drink. And if possible, also nice and attentive staff. Check! Lunch? Drinks? Dinner? We haven't yet decided what we prefer to do there, but it is a fact that we enjoy coming there. Speaking of this last fact, you can even go there by boat: there are plenty of moorings. For when you are really in holiday mode.
