Why Carinthia (Austria) also belongs on your summer list

Ah, Austria. The land of endless slopes, schnitzels, après-ski (with schnapps), and toboggan runs. Every year, around 1,2 million Dutch people head for Austria. Austria for winter sports. The summer in Austria, on the other hand? We still skip that too often. We are more likely to drive to Northern Italy or Croatia, for example. A shame, because Austria is at least just as beautiful, but comes with a lot less mass tourism.

As soon as the snow disappears, you can swap your skis for hiking boots, the white mountain peaks turn (almost) completely green again, and the clear mountain lakes are perfect for a refreshing dip or an afternoon on a SUP, kayak, or sailboat. And if, in addition to all the good things Austria has to offer, you also want to enjoy Italian cuisine, Slovenian charm, and a relaxed atmosphere (just a tad more so than in Tyrol, for example)? Then this is Carinthia the place to beHaven't booked anything for this summer yet? Full throttle to Austria then.

The best of three countries

The best of three countries

One of the biggest advantages of Carinthia is the locationFrom this corner of Austria, you are right in the middle of nowhere. no time in Italy or Slovenia. A cappuccino on an Italian terrace, lunch with a view of the Slovenian Alps, and back to your accommodation in Carinthia in the evening? No problem at all. For a great day trip, Venice (Italy) is about a two-hour drive away, and Ljubljana (Slovenia) is about an hour away. Other Austrian highlights are never far either: the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is about an hour and a half away and is one of the most beautiful scenic drives in the country. And after that? Just back to Carinthia, to the beautiful mountain lakes, wonderful hiking trails, other sporting activities, and coziest terraces.

How do you get there?

How do you get there?

By car, you can reach Carinthia from the Netherlands in about 11 to 13 hours. It makes for a lovely road trip, especially if you make a stop along the way in, for example, Munich or another nice city. This way, you combine your holiday with a (mini) trip (Do it!). Prefer to fly? From Amsterdam, you can be at an airport like Klagenfurt, Salzburg, Ljubljana, or Venice in about two hours. And Carinthia is even easily accessible by train. You can travel via Germany to cities like Villach and Klagenfurt. And that takes about as long as by car. Once there, a (rental) car is certainly handy. That way, you can easily hop from mountain lake to mountaintop and from Austria to Italy or Slovenia.

Aperitivo, Kärntner Kasnudeln and fish

Aperitivo, Kärntner Kasnudeln and fish

If there is one thing the Austrians from Carinthia like to copy from the Italians, it is the well-known AperitifThat delightful moment in the late afternoon and early evening when you enjoy a drink and a snack. And we are more than happy to join in. The menu is entirely geared towards this. Think of a good glass of regional wine, a refreshing spritz, or a locally brewed beer. Italian pizzas and pastas can also be found in many restaurants.

If we take a look at the Austrian dishes we know from skiing, they can also be found 'simply' on summer menus (such as schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn). However, ordering something truly local is the most fun. For example, order the Carinthian pasta: stuffed dough dumplings with herbs and potato, often served with butter and fresh herbs. Simple, but truly typical of Carinthia (and oh so delicious). Also screw plays a big role here, thanks to all the lakes in the region. Fresh from the water, simply grilled, and preferably without too much fuss. And furthermore, it is mainly about seasonal produce, local cheeses, and preferably a little too much bread to mop it all up. Yum.

Where you want to sleep

Where you want to sleep

Sleeping in nature while still being close to a lovely city is actually the best combination. Always living close by (and enjoying good food, of course), but still being able to enjoy your holiday in complete peace and quiet. Where can you find that in Carinthia? The best-known base is around the WörtherseeThis is the warmest lake in the area (lovely!), there is always something to do, and there is absolutely no shortage of places to eat and drink. For a bit more peace and quiet and an equally crystal-clear mountain lake, the surroundings of the Lake Ossiach A top choice (and probably our choice). You can still swim, paddleboard, walk along the water, and take the lift into the mountains here, but with just a bit more space around you. And from here, you are also in Villach in no time. If you are traveling with kids, there are more than enough nice campsites nearby (with lovely chalets). EuroParcs Ossiacher See, Camping Beach Ossiacher See en Seecamping Hoffmann are, for example, good choices. Going on a romantic trip for two? Then there are plenty of nice (and luxury) hotels to be found.

At Visit Villach (Villach – Faaker See – Ossiacher See Region) You'll find an overview of amazing accommodations in the region. From small-scale hotels to chalets right on the water. Hello coffee and breakfast by the lake. Oh, and by the way, you can book right away too.

Villach (and DRAUpuls)

Villach (and DRAUpuls)

Villach is the second largest city in Carinthia, but if we are to believe the locals, definitely the coziest. So, a visit to Villach really shouldn't be missing from your list. The center is compact, with colorful facades, small streets, and squares full of terraces and delicious ice cream shops (hello Italian ice cream). Oh, and of course, you'll find the necessary souvenirs and colorful additions to your wardrobe there too. Along the Drau, the river that flows through the city, lies DRAUpuls: The city's summer water and light show. Every Wednesday and Friday at 21:30 PM, the river transforms into a show of fountains, light, and music. Completely free, out in the open air, and with the beautiful city in the background. If you are lucky (or watch long enough), you might even hear our own Duncan Laurence playing Arcade.

Tip: first, spend an afternoon strolling through the center of Villach. Then, settle down somewhere for an Aperitivo – preferably on a Friday, because that is when the city goes all out for Friday afternoon drinks and it gets incredibly lively. Next, walk to a restaurant for dinner and finish the evening with an ice cream while watching DRAUpuls.

On to it drielandenpuntNo, not the one we know in the Netherlands near Vaals, but the one here in Carinthia, where Austria, Italy, and Slovenia meet. You can literally stand in all three countries at the same time here. At least, technically speaking, you can hug three countries at once (yes, really). On one side Austrian alpine meadows, on the other Italian mountain villages, and just a little further on the high Slovenian peaks. The easiest way to get up is by ski lift (although walking or cycling is also possible), after which you have a short and manageable walk to the point itself. If you want to take it even more relaxed, you can book a skeleton Renting: a type of support device that makes hiking up the mountain 30% less strenuous. Is it really necessary? No. It is, however, absolutely fun to try out the latest gadgets. You rent the skeleton next to the lift. After hiking and enjoying the view, you can just as easily take the lift back down.

You can find one at almost every campsite or on the riverbank. rent a SUP and gliding out onto the lake like that, especially in the morning when the water is completely calm, is extra nice. Also a round with a boot Crossing the lake is practically part of the experience. You can get on and off at multiple locations around the lake whenever you want. For those who want something a bit more active, there are also places where you can wakeboarding of waterskiën, usually just at the edge of the lake. And whoever wants to go a step further can even (learn to) scuba diving in the lake (there are various objects from the Second World War on the bottom and plenty of fish to see) or paragliding from the mountains surrounding Lake Ossiacher See, with a view over the water and the entire valley. This way, you can tick off a few more bucket list experiences here.

With the kids

With the kids

The eternal entertainment of the kids has also been well thought out around Lake Ossiach (and in Carinthia in general). For example, there is the monkey forest on the Gerlitzen, where you walk among the monkeys during a guided tour through the forest. At the foot of the same mountain lies Landskron Castle, where you go to the bird show With birds of prey, you can fly right over your head. The castle itself and the view are at least as worthwhile. And you can also enjoy a delicious meal there with that breathtaking view (including a children's menu).

By the water, the kids get to work a bit more on their own. At the Lake.Bike At Family Playground Ossiacher See, there is a mini pumptrack, a skill park, and small trails where kids can learn to ride bikes or have fun doing stunts. And those who still have energy left can hop on the Lake.Bike routes around the lake. There are various routes, ensuring there is something for everyone, young and old. Additionally, there is plenty of climbing and playing to be done in the mountains surrounding Lake Ossiacher. From summer toboggan runs (yes really) until climbing parks between the trees and cable cars that will get you on the Gerlitzers just like that.
