The tastiest coffee spots in Utrecht (including new coffee shops for your to-do)
Student city Utrecht just lends itself to a morning + (pre)afternoon coffee, some studying, shopping or working between a cup of coffee; the city is really not just fun for nights out or shopping sessions. The catering industry in Utrecht also understands this: coffee shops galore. Plenty of nice coffee shops that are already well-known and famous - but new acquisitions are always nice to save in your Google Maps.
Let's go!
Kameel on Oudegracht is always busy on weekends – and we understand why. Everything here is fresh. The sourdough bread is crispy, the cinnamon rolls are flavorful, and the coffee? Strong, just the way a cup of coffee should be. The best part: grab a quick takeaway or linger with a pastry; it always feels like the perfect start to your day. No wonder so many Utrecht residents locals meet here on the weekend to catch up and just enjoy.
Not just in Utrecht, but in many other Dutch cities as well. Wakuli doesn't do fancy things, but it does offer truly good coffee. Everything here revolves around ethically sourced beans, bought directly from the farmers, lightly roasted, and super fresh. You can taste the difference immediately. The baristas are happy to explain where your cup comes from, but without being preachy (hallelujah). Order a flat white or, if you're in the mood for something different, the nitro coffee – cold, creamy, and surprisingly delicious. A perfect pit stop for a road trip or to linger and eventually stock up on coffee for home.
From now on, the real gourmet will go to the Zadelstraat in Utrecht. There you will find a man behind a beast of a coffee machine, who will let you taste the best, special, special coffee. Anyday coffee is on the facade. That's where you should go.
The whole adventure could start through crowdfunding and with success, because a few weeks later the location was a fact. The business can become even more pleasant, but the beginning is there and so are the customers - because the news immediately spread like wildfire in Utrecht and the surrounding area. Location is also not to be missed: perfect to combine with a visit to the heart of the city center (no detour necessary to hop past Anyday).
A book could also be written about latte art. By unicorn to swan – it's never boring.
In the east of Utrecht you can now enjoy Ukiyo Coffee in a permanent building - no more bicycles (yes, but also a permanent home base). Nice for when you want to sit with it for a while.
In Rietveld Schröder House you can enjoy Ukiyo in the old garage. Everything was renovated and there was suddenly room for a nice coffee shop. Small but: on all days that Rietveld Schröder House is open, Ukiyo is there - except on Saturdays. So be careful if you want to visit during the weekend.
Cupp. Here everything revolves around coffee. In 2019, Peter opened his own coffee bar here. Cupp Specialty Coffee. And folks, the coffee is good. That is not surprising, Peter worked for Doppio for 5 years and now has his own business. The name Cupp comes from the idea that Peter wants people to taste as many different coffees as possible. Nobelstraat 239.
Ohøj Coffee Roasting. Sit at the bar and the bartender immediately starts talking about the coffee. Then you know, passion for the profession. Because people, barista is a profession in itself. Small pastry next to that perfectly brewed coffee. There is no better start to the day. Rijnlaan 27
Cornelis Coffee. Drinking coffee in your pajamas? What? Yes, you can sleep here in the old coach house in the courtyard and then wake up the next morning to the smell of fresh croissants and coffee. That's all you need to know, right? Maliestraat 16.
Dagger Coffee. Located in a commercial building with more than 100 different small businesses. Well...soon Dagger won't be so little anymore. Because there is a new branch on Zijdebalenstraat. Nice about the already existing Dagger. Long tables, easily accessible by public transport and you can sit in the city garden. In other words, the perfect workplace.
The Coffee Bean. Coffee with a cookie and a mill, it doesn't get more Dutch than that. 't Koffieboontje is also chock full of original details and a handsome bar. And now it's takeaway every day from 09:00 AM to 16:00 PM. Coffee date it is. Oudegracht 92.
30 ml. Is the place where, according to some, you can drink the best (self-roasted) coffee in Utrecht. With four locations throughout the city, there is always one must visit nearby. What started as a small espresso bar, this concept has now grown into a real franchise with 10 locations throughout the country and its own coffee roasting facility. And they don't just have good coffee here either all day long breakfast.

The Village. For good coffee you have to go to The Village in Utrecht. They have two locations: one on Voorstraat and one at the Science Park. It all started at the location in Voortraat. The idea of coffee and music also originated here. How about live in store bands and a cup of coffee on the side? From rock 'n roll to songwriters, it's all here. There's also a shop for the best coffee at home, t-shirts and more.
KEEK. If you live in Utrecht, you have probably been there. If you don't live in Utrecht, you actually want to go here (we think). KEEK (or Art and Fair Coffee) is a paradise for everyone who loves cake (and such). KEEK is a kind of Baker's Shop, but different. Inside it is homely, cozy. Wooden tables, white chairs, just like you have at home. As the name suggests, there is art on the walls and vases with flowers everywhere on the table. The cakes are homemade and you can taste it. The brownie is heavenly and you cannot (shouldn't) pass up the carrot cake. To the sugar overload To compensate, there are also tasty juices and smoothies on the menu, such as the smoothie with yogurt, raspberry, orange and honey (yum!). Also delicious for breakfast by the way. Twijnstraat 23.
Brood. Hello Broei. Very nice, uncomplicated community living room on the Utrechtse Oosterkade. At Broei simple (but tasty) sandwiches, good coffee, tasty salads, good people, low prices, a small but nice terrace and Man & Paard workplaces for Utrecht crea-bea freelancers at the back of the shop. Don't do anything about Broei anymore. Or bring Broei to Amsterdam, of course, that is allowed. Oosterkade 24
The Koffie Leute Brauhaus coffee house in Utrecht is not a new, but again an original concept space, this time at Westerkade number 30 in Utrecht, just outside the heart of Utrecht Center. Fun fact: Koffie Leute was the first coffee shop in the Netherlands to focus (again) on filter and so-called 'slow' coffee. So old school. Not only can you go there for a great bowl of comfort, or for something to snack on in rooms that look a bit like your grandma's house with a hipster twist, but there is also a room at the back of the business where a greenhouse is located. which can be rented for lectures, workshops, meetings, presentations, concerts and festivals and more, hosted by a group of enthusiastic entrepreneurs under the name Foundation DRUK. They sell all kinds of gadgets that are in some way linked to the foundation. Oh, and also good to know: there is quite a large selection of borderlines available, to get through rainy days. Westerkade 30
Café Elize. The sweet cafe near the Utrecht Conservatory serves sweet cakes, coffee and sandwiches, to stay of to go. Girly cool are the right words if we were to describe Café Elize. So for sandwiches, cookies and cake. Mariaplaats 44.
Rocking Chair. You can find this business near the Griftpark, just outside the center of Utrecht. So no tourists, but since June 2016 it has been the favorite spot of the Netherlands locals. Not that difficult to understand: Rocking Chair is modern and creative in terms of looks eye catcher a cream and white safe with, aha, a rocking chair in the same color in front of it. The vibe is young and the food is simple. From homemade granola, four types of sandwiches and soups, that's it. Oh, and excellent coffee, of course. Highly recommended for those who are – or are not – in the area. Willem van Noortstraat 88.
Lucas can be found on Wittevrouwenstraat at number 23. Lucas was beautifully renovated from an (ugly) telephone shop by owners Maartje and Norbert into a cozy, cozy café. The central point of the café is the green one counter (now we want a bathroom made of those tiles) and the tables made from the cast iron base of old sewing machines and a stone top are irresistible – a DIY project by the owners. It is not only a beautiful place: Maartje also bakes more than tasty, gluten- and lactose-free cakes and pies, while Norbert provides the coffee. We tasted the chocolate cake and it was wonderfully light and fluffy – like. The rest of the menu is simple but with enough choice for allergy sufferers. Apart from all that, it is the passion of Maartje and Norbert that makes the place an attraction. So friendly and fun, it's impossible not to be in a good mood.
Coffee & me. Just outside the center of Utrecht, in the pleasant Lombok district you will find Koffie & Ik. A regular spot for many of those students and freelancers, because of WiFi, excellent coffee and a relaxed atmosphere, thanks to the always cheerful and friendly staff. The interior is simple and minimalist. An old wooden floor, wooden tables and lots of white. As if you imagine yourself in a coffee bar in Scandinavia. Nice workplace - there are large windows and it is very light. Plus, they open at eight o'clock, so it's also an option for the early birds. Also a great place for a morning of reading the newspaper or an afternoon of coffee and cake (the carrot cake and banana bread are favorites). Oh, and the sourdough bread with cream cheese and avocado. You want that too. Vleutenseweg 169
Midday. 'Buzz, a rattling coffee grinder, free WiFi. That's Noen'. We couldn't say it better. The cozy coffee house in Utrecht East, near the Wilhelmina Park, is a great place to spend a few hours on your laptop during the week, including coffee. But Noen is also a good place to be at the weekend. The menu includes delicious coffee, a range of teas (Ra Ra Rusputin, anyone? That means black tea) and juices from our own orchard. For example, with that coffee-tea juice, a croissant, yogurt with home-made muesli or a boiled egg. And for the big it-is-Sunday-so-we-can-eat-a-lot brunch: sourdough sandwiches with Scottish salmon and honey-mustard-dill sauce or smoked mackerel with horseradish. Bon appetit! Jan van Scorelstraat 8.
Rhubarb is one of those places where you start with coffee in the morning, then order breakfast (because you can't resist) and you're still sitting there at four in the afternoon – that's Rhubarb. This is located in Zadelstraat in Utrecht small coffee. There is a cozy living room atmosphere that makes you not want to leave once you are seated. The wall tiled with white and pink checks, plants everywhere, several small vases with flowers on the brown tables and fantastic little seats by the window (perfect place for the busy weekend; all kinds of things pass by). Coffee in the morning with a hearty breakfast like fluffy hot cakes with fresh fruit and whiskey-butterscotch sauce (yay) or sourdough bread with hard goat cheese, homemade apple syrup and almond shavings. It's all delicious. '
In Utrecht East, behind the Wilhelmina Park, you will find this cute bakery; District is the name. Going there is a good outing for a sunny day, that's a promise. It is a treat to have the delicious lemon cake served on a beautiful wooden board (paying close attention to the details) with a cup of Bocca coffee on the side. But above all, District is a bakery with an extensive selection of bread, tarts, cakes and cookies from all over the country. Recently you can even opt for healthy gluten-free baked goods. District's breakfast is also very tasty and can be enjoyed during the week (Tuesday to Saturday) from 7.30 am. On Sundays from 8.30:XNUMX am (still quite on time). Last but not least: the simple, Scandinavian decor is a gift. Especially the large wooden table in the middle of the bakery; as if you were having a nice family brunch. Jan van Scorelstraat 1
Classical music fans, listen up: in Utrecht you will find an address for lunch where classical music always plays. There are even live performances on Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons and for the rest of the week there is plenty of classical music on offer at the Muzieklokaal. Of course you don't have to that hard to be a classic fan to enjoy it here, you can also just come here for some peace and quiet. The music gives the place something very serene, especially in combination with the view of the water at the Bemuurde Weerd. The Music Room offers tasty snacks, sandwiches, salads or cakes, the menu changes regularly. In addition to the “regular” menu, the Music Room also has a music menu, so you can order music to your taste. Owners Talitha and Sanne are very passionate and have a... up to date selection of new classic releases. And you can also purchase the music they play in the restaurant on site. This is a wonderfully calm place to relax or unwind get some work done with classical music in the background. Didn't people once claim that you can concentrate better when accompanied by classical music? Worth the try! Bemuurde Weerd Oostzijde 13
Slope9. Utrecht really has the best of both. The place is in the heart of Utrecht (the cozy part, near the Zadelstraat for anyone who knows Utrecht), because it is a coffee bar and a wine bar. In the morning, the men of Talud9 have espressos, cappuccinos and lattes ready for you, with or without a croissant or a slice of banana bread on the side. Two different espresso beans to choose from, if you prefer mild or spicy. And then the wine... Why Talud9 is the ideal wine bar, for us and for many in Utrecht, is because of the special 'walking wine list'. In other words, the waiter (who walks through the shop). You tell him what you like (fresh and fruity, for example, or spicy) and he brings two bottles of wine. You can taste them both and choose the wine you like best. Both no success? Then they just try again. And admittedly, we find that help quite nice, with about 50 open wines on the 'menu'. Dark Yard 9
New at number 33 in the Choorstraat is Jacques, the sleekest coffee shop in Utrecht. If you like minimalist design with a Scandinavian twist, you'll want to put this place on your coffee to-do list. They have taste in interior design, but also certainly good taste in coffee and... pastries. Although the place looks luxurious, the prices are on the nice side by Utrecht standards. It is good to know that there are no seats at this coffee shop, so your coffee is to go. Extra reason to walk around the center of Utrecht.
