Long live Luxembourg! A surprising weekend in the city

Luxembourg? Yes, Luxembourg! For those who think this mini-capital is boring or dusty: think again. Luxembourg City is a surprisingly nice mix of history, modern architecture, green parks, good food, art and a touch of mystery. And with free public transport, a compact layout and nice hotspots it is the ideal destination for a relaxed weekend away.

Come to Mama!

Come to Mama!

First things first. Roll that suitcase into the colorful lobby of Mama Shelter, because staying in Luxembourg is done in style here. This lively base in the Kirchberg district is a cheerful, eclectic mix of pop art and playful details (hello animal masks as lampshades). The beds are white, soft and super comfy. Breakfast is a feast with French baguettes, sweet toast, scrambled eggs, sausages, cheeses, fruit, jams (ten kinds, really) and much more. The location is also great: museums around the corner, and with the free tram you are in the city center in no time. Mama Shelter is affordable, quirky, popular and daring.

Art and Castles

Art and Castles

Attention art lovers: change (Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean) is one for your to-do list. The building alone, designed by Chinese-American designer Ming Pei, is worth it. Sleek lines, amazing light and exhibitions of all shapes and sizes. What makes it so special is the combination of the design with the visible original underground passages and mining system from the final construction phase in 1836-1837. And bonus points for the location: the museum is right next to the old forts of Luxembourg. If you want to learn more about the history of Luxembourg, dive in Twisted Eechelen Museum in. To be fair: that is a bit dustier, but a quick visit can't hurt. Then you walk through the fairytale-like Fort Obergrünewald.Panoramic view and tasty mini hike guaranteed.
At the bottom of the valley, take the glass elevator (Pfaffenthal) for a short ride to the city center. One of the nice ways to see Luxembourg. From the Pescatore Park float 71 meters up in a transparent cabin, with a view over the Alzette Valleyi.

LUGA (Luxembourg Urban Garden)

LUGA (Luxembourg Urban Garden)

From May to October, Luxembourg turns into one big green playground. PLACE is a temporary exhibition full of art, urban gardens and sustainable installations spread throughout the city, with the Pétrusse Park as the centrepiece.

You walk past futuristic greenhouses to flowery works of art and plop down in a beach chair among the greenery. Everything is playful, creative and made with a green mindset. No 'look-but-don't-touch', but feel, smell, discover and plop down in one of the beach chairs to just do nothing. LUGA shows how city and nature can merge, and that works very well.

Enjoy your meal!

There is no shortage of food in Luxembourg. Take a seat in the lovely setting at Public Housee. Modern versus royal, because the building does that. The food on your plate doesn't either. Carefully thought out dishes with seasonal products and the wine knowledge is on point. Bonus: often there is a small exhibition to see in the building next door, Casino Forum d'Art Contemporain. Cultural snack also included.

From trendy craftsmanship through to traditional. Around Dierfgen is the place to go for Luxembourg classics. Hearty dishes, local wine, crémant, and a place that is always full, which says it all. The atmosphere is friendly, for young and old, and the food ensures that you can continue to stroll.

Wine, jazz and charm: the best places for drinks

Wine, jazz and charm: the best places for drinks

For a good drink, there are three places you really shouldn't miss.

Konrad Café: if you go for vintage vibes, cozy corners and a nice menu. Situated in a winding street between colorful houses, a drink on the terrace here provides the ultimate holiday feeling. Not the hippest place in town, but the most characteristic: at Bar-à-Vin you drink the most delicious crémant, and the atmosphere is good. The owner welcomes everyone personally and tells with love about all his wines. A small inconspicuous shop, where you tastings can do and around drinks time every table is occupied. Liquid Café is a brown café with live music and cocktails (or other drinks). Think French jazz bands, a well-stocked bar and people who don't want to go home.

Golden Lady and Haërz

Golden Lady and Haërz

After the drinks, one more time up high, after all you are in Luxembourg. On the square at the lookout point at the Golden lady (Gëlle Fra) you will find a look-out attraction that rotates. You look over the city and into the valley. Nice to do this during golden hour to do, for an extra nice view.

From here you can go straight to Hearz for a casual all-day diner, less than 10 minutes away. Large corner building in the middle of the city, always busy and delicious. On the menu: burgers, bao bun, salads and everything in between. Ideal for shared dining or just a quick bite before you do one last tour of the city.
