Tastiest Organic bakery: Pumpernickel in The Hague
Opened at the beginning of 2020... Everything got off to a great start... And then there was that well-known hitch... *Cough, Covid, cough*. But at Pumpernickel (Pumper nickel? Yes, that is a dark type of rye bread from Germany, and it just tastes so good) they did not give up and promptly provided the entire neighborhood with bread on Wednesdays and Saturdays. 1,5 meter rows to the other side of the street, beautiful sight. Fortunately, this organic bakery is now open again - covid19-proof - for your fresh pastry needs. Atmospheric and hip inside - think Kinfolk vibes - and for now a few (it remains corona time) tables by the window. You can sit outside on their terrace with the nicest orange parasols.
ENNE: did you know that Pumpernickel is also perfect for takeaway? That's right!
Also tasty? Everything from the Pumpernickel oven. The butter cake with lemon and sea salt, the almond croissants (which on almond croissant days - hi Scrabble - they unceremoniously make as fresh for you as they initially seem), the Breton plum cake, the coconut macaroons and more. Such as homemade sandwiches with fresh egg salad or grilled eggplant. And owners Merel and Daan, who both previously worked at Restaurant in The Hague (another fun recommendation), on Friday evenings we turn on the baker's oven especially for sourdough pizzas. Richly topped with grilled razor clams and garlic, or Iberico pork belly and sweet and sour wild garlic. For take away or on the terrace with a glass of cava or a sour beer. That's life!
And that oven is not only used for pastry or cooking sometime pizza – no – it mainly produces serious fresh bread. Rye, raisin, toasted sesame or sourdough breads that you dread and then eat at home. And then we haven't even started about the orange (above, because they're brewed here) ciders – we're quite fans, to say the least – and Pumpernickels house wine from Italy. Everything here is delicious!
