The tastiest food memories from Team Bartsboekje

Pff, yes – Barts Boekje is bursting with food lists. Restaurants, cafes, hidden gems – you name it. But what are the absolute favorites of Team Barts Boekje itself? The food memories that will stay with us forever? As seasoned locals and experienced travelers, we share the tips that you really want to have.

I'll go first. To start with the conclusion: I don't necessarily think these were the best meals I've ever had, but my taste buds are (apparently) inextricably linked to fun / unique / unforgettable moments. Pasta Vongole with your feet in the sand and as the very last away from Salins Beach, St Tropez. Although I didn't know at the time that this was called Plage des Salins: this was almost 20 years ago and was still a real discovery for 'non-locals'.

Super simple baguette hamburger at an even simpler beach bar on Aigua Blanques, also before the crowd came. I know, sounds old and sour, but back then it was a really unique place. The beach tent is still there but the beach is not really fun / accessible anymore, unfortunately.

Bar do Fundo; fresh fish in Portugal. At least… I think it was here. The last table (and a perfect one), children asleep, the most delicious fresh fish, delicious wine… That it all comes together.

The breakfast cheese croissant from Brass Farmer op Bonaire. Not necessarily very special perhaps but still… Perfection (at that time, probably still now)

The shrimps straight from the sea onto your plate Corsairs in Aruba, or the same with the Fishing in Curacao. Nothing fancy, very tasty.

And then that 'garage' in Mexico, not far from Tulum, which we stumbled upon by accident and scored divine tacos, then tipped 3x the bill because we couldn't believe it was so cheap. No idea what it's called anymore: looked for this place a few years later but never found it, alas.

I don't think a week goes by that I don't have Dashi Soba from Menya Inoichi in Kyoto I think. A simple ramen – for which we had to queue for an hour – but with so much taste. Maybe it tasted good because we had to queue for so long.
After hours of hiking in Spain we found the beach bar Playa de Cantarrijan, close by Nerja. Restaurant Bola Marina serves a really good black paella there. The kind of pan that you keep eating until you finally have to roll onto the beach for a nap. Guilty.
Springrolls in a homestay in the north of Vietnam. Eating on the floor in a slightly uncomfortable position, but so good. We tried to make them ourselves afterwards, but of course that didn't work.
When I got in San Francisco I only had my first Clam Chowder after two months. That was really not possible according to my American friends, they made a sport of introducing the best ones to me. Eventually we found it somewhere at Pier39.

In the meantime, a trip to the Algarve regular thing with my girlfriends. Hours of lying by the pool, yoga in the morning, a bit of tennis in the evening, but mostly lots of eating all day long. Each of us conjures up the most beautiful and tasty dishes on the table, and with palm trees, golden hour and a view of the sea, those homemade pizzas and gnocchi with herbs from the (gigantic) garden taste at their best. The beach is wonderful and for a good lunch you can go to The Dolphin.
Yes Yes, Paris. Strolling through the city without a plan and ending up at a gigantic French flea market. Then queuing up at a 'not hip' place for a change breakfast, because we had wandered off to a suburb. Best thing that could happen because: the most delicious baguette with butter and jam ever. "Do you remember that one baguette in Paris?"...we still talk about it. and another favorite: Loulou Montmartre, in yes, Montmartre. Great, cute, romantic and really delicious food.
Sierra Leone, my second hometown. Here I am eating on the beach by far the tastiest spiced fish from the ocean. Lots of it madam jeanette (you have to like it a bit spicy), and the cross between fried potato and fries with ketchup works wonders here. By the way, you can see the fish being pulled out of the sea right in front of you.

Let's get straight to the point: I'm a dessert person. I'll have dessert as a starter, main course and dessert, or for breakfast, lunch and dinner - that's fine too. So it's no surprise that my food memories contain something sweet. Every year I went on holiday with my parents and sister to the Lake Garda. Yes, we are a 'every year on holiday by car to the campsite on Lake Garda' family, and I am not ashamed of it. We did choose a different campsite every year, to keep the variation a bit ;). When we were near the town Salò sat, we always went there one or more evenings. There was live music on the street and, in an alley near the church, there was an ice cream parlor with the most delicious ice cream EVER (I should actually say gelato of course). We are a big fan of one flavor in particular: Orgasma (yes, we didn't come up with that name either). Every time we get ice cream somewhere else, we talk about it again and I don't know if it was really that good, or if it's just the whole image of a vacation with family, Italy and nice weather that makes it so great in my head. Either way, it is a very nice memory.

Nowhere is such a delicious gelato as in Italy. On a warm summer day we lay all day in the sea or in the grass on Barcola Beach, just outside Trieste. On this "beach" there is no sand, but a strip of greenery full of trees that provide shade. Between that strip of green there is a kind of boulevard and from there you can walk (via a staircase, although you can also jump from the rocks) straight into the crystal clear sea. A person does not need more, but the ice of Gelateria Con Amore made the day even better.

My first overseas trip to South Africa—and no, not Cape Town, but He's trapped, one hour from Durban. During the spearfishing caught the surf guide a few fat lobsters, which went straight on the braai. So simple: lobster, butter, garlic and salt. Delicious! Surf House & Camp

This winter in South Tyrol, in ski area Seiser Alm, we had lunch on the slopes at Gostner Schwaige. We were given the chef's special menu, while the owner passionately talked about the food—almost all homemade on their nearby farm. Five or was it six courses? Just the right amount of portions, so there was even room for dessert: dumplings made according to their own recipe, cooked in milk from their own farm. How? No idea. But mega delicious! It's traditional South Tyrolean cuisine—a blend of German and Italian—but next level.

When learning Spanish for a month in Malaga of course there are a lot of tapas and sangria. We have explored every street (including my bank account), but then you have something. The special sushis on the menu of Sibuya Urban Sushi Bar were real gems, you can eat tapas on every street corner, and you can sleep and have breakfast in the middle of the city at Dulces Dreams Boutique. Sweet, savory—almost everything on the menu (and all equally delicious). The pizzas from Pizza Shed in Cape Town? Perfect if you'd rather stay indoors (after climbing Table Mountain). And don't forget Oranjezicht market & The Old Biscuit Mill!! Must-visit.

Well, I'm not really an ice cream eater, but there is one that has always stuck with me: an ice cream in the shape of a rose (very trendy, I know) Bee In Italian Perfumes, but so soft and melting that it just slipped away—the sun and the temperature finished it off.

Okay, there is also one that can be named in our own country. Everything with pistachio from Salvo Bake House in Amsterdam: ultimate favorite, I crave it every weekend. Such a cookie contains enough calories for an evening meal, so not an everyday cookie. But oh, what a treat.

A weekend Knokke-Heist is a regular fixture with us. After a few times of strolling along the coast and shopping in the Zoute, we discovered a restaurant: The Lighthouse. Pretty good food. But okay, good is good… until we suddenly saw king crab on the menu. Described as something you say u against. So it makes sense that we thought: treat yourself.

Well, we knew that. From that first bite we were sold. Every time we came back, the messy slobbers flew around our necks and that giant crab with butter sauce was on the table. Officially with rice, but give us fries. Unfortunately, it has now disappeared from the menu (RIP), but we still dream about it. And honestly? If he ever comes back, we'll be the first to get our hands dirty again.

Last summer I went on holiday to Zakynthos. And no, not partying on the strip, but rather on the beautiful side of the island—a tiny village, Kampi, on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere. There was one restaurant near us: a sunset taverna on the edge of the island, overlooking the sea. On the menu? Mainly a lot of meat. Not necessarily charming, but really good and tasty, that's for sure. Wine, bread, tzatziki and oh yes, a very tasty chocolate dessert. Hmmm.

I can often be found in Utrecht. Lunch at Jackrabbit on the Neude is really my favorite. I always order the club sandwich with fries (oops). I often meet up with friends for a drink on the terrace, with nachos or a cocktail at the bar.

Number 1 (and 2 and 3) is Cervejaria Ramiro in Lisbon. My ex-boyfriend came from the city (it was great to have discovered that city with a local) and it was a given, no matter what time we arrived, to go straight from the airport to Ramiro. You can't make a reservation (I think) and there's always a line. No problem, you give your name and number of people and wait for a table. Enjoy a glass of wine outside (they now have a whole Heineken corner attached to their building, something I am less enthusiastic about).

The first time I came here and was served the large shrimps, super fresh, with a butter sauce, I didn't know what hit me. The vongele shells, shrimps in oil, and the fresh crab made the party complete. Too bad; the last few times I was there the men in the service could hardly handle it anymore and with the Heineken corner it is becoming more and more commercial. I sincerely hope that it is not tourist trap is becoming!

I can still taste the mussels on the Quiberon peninsula in France and the wine and tapas there. Bar Del Pla In Barcelona I always dream.
