A day of strolling: Amsterdam's favorite markets, including insider tips

once upon a time then the world troubling times knew... we went en masse to the market. Because there, in the open air and safely at a distance of one and a half meters from each other, it is a relief to take a break (#bartbijftin) and get some fresh air. A round of the market is our favorite time of the week. And for that we search the Noorder, Ten Kate, Albert Cuyp, the Lindenmarkt -you name it, we go there- off to our favorite stalls by heart. And we share it. Here. Including our secret tips on where to get the tastiest sandwiches, most beautiful flowers and creamiest French cheeses.

The Noordermarkt

The Noordermarkt

We'll start right away with our biggest favorite; the Noordermarkt on Saturday and Monday (but especially on Saturday; because it is the weekend and the 'farmers market'). It will come as no surprise that we are more than happy to brave the square. We can smell the freshly roasted nuts from afar...

On Saturdays the market transforms into a real farmers' market, where the freshest products are up for grabs. Everything organic and everything - we'll say it again - very fresh. Here you will find our favorite spice stall with beautiful fresh herbs and salsas. And in the summer you can get delicious fresh branches of verveine for tea.

The Noordermarkt is still a favorite. Today you enter the market from one entrance and extra wide paths have been created between the stalls. Safe shopping, eat your heart out. Al is a face mask a big plus.

The Lindengracht market

The Lindengracht market

When at the Noordermarkt, then just walk to the Lindenmarkt. You probably don't even notice it, because the two naturally merge, but the Lindenmarkt (on Saturday) is also a wonderful tour fresh air. At the very beginning you can score some tasty kibbeling or a tuna salad sandwich at the nearest fishmonger. Not a Saturday goes by without us cravings have the best pure peanut brittle from Nootzaak Gotjé, and if you are still looking (or just fancy green): for 'life' in your home, we bring in the most beautiful indoor (and outdoor plants, they have those too) Plant from Jantje. Oh and don't forget to get a Sabich sandwich after shopping Abu Sage. Then your Saturday will be complete. Last Lindengracht/Noordermarkt tip: alternate it with the hot sausage sandwich Flux. Also one to long for every Sunday because it's almost Saturday already...

Ten Katemarkt

Ten Katemarkt

Another favorite… If only for the weekly addition of fresh bread. Bread, always at Ad Straathof. Not much further away you can get the tastiest mango (!) hummus (do it and try it!) and wraps with falafel for 4,50 at Gouden Tent. We always walk an extra round to Herman for cheese. Favorite.

At the beginning of the Ten Katemarkt, Lex is standing with vegetables, Also known as the '50 cent stall', where everything –you guessed correctly– 50 cents costs: from large bunches of fresh mint to avocados. It's there.

Albert Cuyp market

Albert Cuyp market

Truth be told, it is the busiest, most touristy market in the city. Many stalls, for many people. That often means high prices. But nothing could be further from the truth. Between the admittedly high price tags, you can score some really nice stuff left and right. Like a huge, plus beautiful, bouquet of flowers for ten euros. You won't find one like that at your favorite flower shop.

And another one like that need-to-know'tje from the Albert Cuyp market: those so-called healing shots. With ginger in it. You know. At the Albert Cuyp, these mini bottles, filled with healthy resolutions, are at least somewhat affordable. Oh and something else, something much less healthy; you can't walk across the Albert Cuyp market without freshly scored (still warm!) stroopwafels. That's just how it works. The last plus point of this market, you can go there from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays it's a bit disappointing, then you might find a lost chip on the ground in the street, but that's not what we're here for.
