Nature Museum Fryslân in Leeuwarden: discovering the underwater world

If there is one thing that deserves the stamp of youth sentiment, for me it is the Fryslân Nature Museum in Leeuwarden. A regular occurrence when we went to De Stad with the family and the decor of my children's party when I turned eight. Fast forward to 2020 because I don't think the Nature Museum has stood still. Nowadays it still appears to be a fantastic place to learn everything about nature with the offspring. And thanks to changing exhibitions and really fun activities, every visit is slightly different. Almost open again and a highlight of the Far North.

The hit of the Fryslân Nature Museum is the popular Underwater Safari, which has recently been completely renovated. A good example of how museums these days are anything but boring; during this safari you get into a vehicle and make a ride through the colorful underwater world of the Netherlands. Want to bet your little one wants another round? Via ditches and lakes towards the Wadden Sea and of course the canals also pass by. Spot safari-style the Big Five of the Dutch waters.

In addition, never skip the Whale Hall when you are in the Nature Museum. The fifteen meter long skeleton of the sperm whale is incredibly impressive. And in the attic, Darwin's theory of evolution is explained using objects, games and videos. A treat for the little wiseguys. Fancy a little excitement? Children between the ages of four and eight can look for the giant dragon Li-Ming during an interactive fairy tale. Found? Then you can make a wish.

In addition to the regular programme, there are changing exhibitions. For example, there is now a GIF about poisonous animals until January 2021. Snakes of course, but there are more nasty animals that bite away. Spiders, centipedes, frogs and scorpions, for example. Extra cool: at the time of the exhibition, real animals will be used and a special breeding program will start. So there is a chance that you will witness the birth of a bunch of snakes. Enter at your own risk.
