Sprinkle Cage

Sprinkle Cage

On your way to Oudtshoorn or Prince Albert? You must do it. And if you do that, then Sprinkle Cage in Calitzdorp (yes...) the perfect stop. Back to basics is Sprinkle Kooi, and sometimes that is exactly what you are looking for. Such a place to finish reading a book. Take afternoon naps. Messing around a bit. Also perfect as a weekend destination if you have already seen a lot of the Western Cape and want to drive towards Prince Albert. Remember that name: Sprinkle Cage

Schotia Safaris Private Game Reserve (Port Elizabeth)

Schotia Safaris Private Game Reserve (Port Elizabeth)

We would like to go Bottelierskop en Gondwana Game Reserve – as far as we know, the best options for a safari near (more than 4 hours' drive) from Cape Town. But if you can/want to drive another hour further, then definitely go to Schotia Safaris Private Game Reserve, a great location just past Port Elizabeth. Small-scale, beautiful and with a great location game drives experience.

Unexpected Place

Unexpected Place

A dream guesthousefarm is Onverwacht Plaas. Everything is just right here, from the most beautiful design in the interior, to the swimming dam, sauna and the most beautiful sunrises in Wellington. Onverwacht Plaas belongs to a Dutch family (conveniently) who live on the estate themselves, and who opened a large extra cottage on their property - with two spacious bedrooms. Can be rented via Airbnb; Previously only for friends and acquaintances but now, alleluia, also for the general public. The only thing you want to do here is go to Fiftyfive Croissants every day (we describe it in detail in our book – trust us, it's worth it). Nothing else. The place can also be rented as a wedding location – the dream….

You can book via AirBnBYou can see more via the Instagram account Unexpected Place

Tierkloof Mountain Cottages

Tierkloof Mountain Cottages

Only 2,5 hours from Cape Town in the middle of nature – off the grid (but with WiFi, ha!) – there are some nice ones cottage those together Tierkloof Mountain Cottages were baptized. The sunrises (yes, here we go again) are not that special here. Seeing is believing. All day long you want to do nothing more than swim, read a book, braai, drink wine on a rock, sleep and cook extensively. Because you can't - and don't want to - go anywhere after checking in. Just the vacation you needed.

Sediba Luxury Safari Resort, Welgevonden

Sediba Luxury Safari Resort, Welgevonden

Sediba Luxury Safari Lodge, between the green mountains of the Welgevonden game reserve, where you are surrounded by the African wildlife (more than 50 mammals, 300 bird species, to name a few) and more than 35.000 hectares of mountains, valleys and plains. Enough to write about, but sometimes few words say more than a thousand: magic, that's what it is. From swimming in the outdoor pool, looking at infinity of nature to dipping in the hot tub – everything is The Dream.

In addition to the fantastic surroundings that will make your pants drop (it doesn't matter, no one sees you), there is plenty to do! There are unique dinner locations, such as the Rock Boma, and you can dine by a campfire or have breakfast with one view in 'the bush'. Or hurry up with the rangers who know something about every stone and every tree. And of course you can book a safari. To then discuss the day in the awesome wooden bar of Sediba. Well, something for everyone. The enormous detached suites are surrounded by South African nature, overlooking a winding river, and all equipped with a wood-burning stove and comfortable lounge area. If you want something from someone else point of view want to see and are not yet relaxed enough, then book the spa & wellness.

Kids along? Good idea. They are more than welcome and will not believe their eyes, but know: a lion is not the same as a wagging puppy. There is also one nanny service (date night at home, uh, lodge).

Coot Club, Stanford

Coot Club, Stanford

Now we don't necessarily believe that there really are accommodations where the world slows down or where you simply relax just by being there. In the case of the Coot Club do we want to believe that again? This is because the birds sing the first song when you get up, the surrounding nature is at its most beautiful and everything here revolves around being outside. And yet, it's all nice that we relax, but we also want to take a little action When in Cape Town. Especially when we have the kids have to entertain. The accommodations at the Coot Club are the right combination of lazy luxury and active outdoor life. No sagging volleyball nets, broken trampolines and boring bingo evenings here, but local wine for the parents and playing in nature for the kids. Also fun for parents, outdoor enthusiasts can get involved with water sports such as kayaking and paddle boarding. Hiking is the best on the Walker Bay Nature Reserve trails.

Just over two hours east of Cape Town, just outside Stanford, you'll find the traditional stones cottage and Coot Club boathouses. The boathouses are built with a nod to sailing and come with a view over the lagoon and the mountains. The Stone Cottages are hidden in the woods.

Does Coot Club really have everything? Yes, certainly, even eating well throughout the day. An hour before sunset, they ring the ship's bell and welcome guests for dinner.

The Lofts & Nest Food Bar, Knysna

The Lofts & Nest Food Bar, Knysna

Knysna Elephant Park (see our Cool Cape Town book) is a destination on its own, like Emily Moon in Plettenberg Bay. And while you're there, it's great fun to explore Knysna some more. Gear up anyway Nest Food Bar, a very big tip from a restaurant The Lofts. The latter, The Lofts, is also a great tip, although we don't think you necessarily have to sleep there to discover the best of the address. Because that's the hotel restaurant, Nest Food Bar so. Oysters, wine, sunset. Check. While you are there, there is bakery-plus next door island of pain also a must for lunch, and for good pizza you can go there Maillard Baking Co. And further? Further is Knysna not the most vibrant part of South Africa, but a tip for a day if you are in the area. Oh, and you can also spot whales there.

The Barn, Yzerfontein

The Barn, Yzerfontein

If you have Yzerfontein on your itinerary (do it!), then leave the barn especially the accommodation where you rest your head. The Barn, the name says it all, is a farm house, designed for four people (there are two identical bedrooms, you can't argue about that). From the living room (with large wood stove and in the middle, next to the long table, a real pizza oven) you can see the sunsets on the west coast at their best. You can view hop here: from the alcove in the living room, through to the large terrace and the bedrooms.

Both bedrooms have an incredibly large window with a bench in it; one of those that you actually want to linger in all day (and night). No address for young people kids incidentatlly. That's a shame, but on the other hand it also offers good prospects for a friends trip, doesn't it?

Rosemead Artisan Bakery in Yzerfontein is nearby; Let the smell of freshly baked bread from the small bakery beckon you (we describe these and more tips in the 'West Coast' chapter).
