Discover your spot: cool cabins across the Netherlands, and how to get there

In the dark months before Christmas we like to have a nice cabin look up - we blame Jude Law and Cameron Diaz. Birds whistling and far away from the hustle and bustle, crowds and big cities. In the evening a book by the fireplace after a brisk walk in the forest... Perfection. Where? Not so difficult, just in our own country. How do you get there? With a shared car naturally! Nature is calling, and getting there is easier than you thought. You just have to know where to go, and how....

Some places on this list are really in the middle of nowhere, some are on the edge of the green or near the water. Sometimes still close to a village, if you still want to go out a bit (but actually you prefer to stay where you are). How do you get there, without your own car? With a shared car; because why make things difficult when it can be easy? Most of the places on this list are not so easy to get to (by public transport) and then the shared car is ideal! We recommend the train to the nearest city, and then score a shared car from there: via startmetdelen.nl you can see exactly which cars can be borrowed where.

Tip, now that the holidays are getting closer, we have the tastiest, cosiest and most cozy treats for you. cabins selected from the country to get into the Christmas spirit. Check this list but once.

Car sharing

Car sharing

With a few exceptions, a car is a must to reach the places on this list. If you are a city dweller (or villager of course) without a car and are longing for green, don't click away immediately: you don't need your own car at all, and an expensive taxi certainly isn't. Car sharing is the solution! All you need is a driver's license, or company that wants to get behind the wheel. In addition to being practical, car sharing is also a sustainable option. Great, because we want to keep all those green places as green as possible. The handy tool on startmetdelen.nl shows where and at what price shared cars are available.

car sharing

Did you know that most parties that offer car sharing offer considerable discounts when you book the car sharing for a few days? That's true. That's convenient, because then you can finally spend a night in that dreamy cabin in the forest.

One of the most tasteful addresses in the country, that is Tiny Hotel. Make no mistake: Tiny Hotel is not a small hotel, but a small Brabant paradise consisting of 'The Forest' and 'The Farm'. It all started with the second, The Farm: two cozy cabins adjacent to the owners' farm. The rental went like a train, the passion was rekindled and nowadays there is also The Forest: three luxury design holiday homes on a small-scale nature park with a public sauna. A nice place with large windows to relax and recharge. Here the nights are dark, you can hear the call of the owl and the drumming of the woodpecker. In the evening in the hot tub under the starry sky, during the day under the outdoor shower or in the public sauna. And all that with a view of the forests. And if you're tired of all that greenery, know that Den Bosch can be reached within half an hour, and that the owner knows all the hotspots in the surrounding villages: very handy, that shared car in front of the door!

Country estate De Weelde

Country estate De Weelde

And so, on a journey of discovery through our own country, we promptly came across the new Country estate De Weelde in Noordwelle in Zeeland. And Buitenplaats de Weelde meets a lot of requirements: swimming pool (unfortunately closed in the winter, but a good excuse to come back in the summer), living room, pub (yes, pub), eat-in kitchen, chill-out space; all hidden in a handsome building with a large piece of land around it. The country house is located on Schouwen-Duivenland, on the edge of the village of Renesse: enough coziness in the area. Just like the beach. And oysters.

Darling Little Escape

Darling Little Escape

De treasure hunters from the Darling in the Nine Streets in Amsterdam (lovely shop, go and have a look), found a gem of an address in Waterlandkerkje. Where? Waterlandkerkje, in Zeeland, a province that is less accessible by public transport and then, as mentioned, the shared car the solution. The house, called Darling Little Escape, was of course decorated with treasures. An eclectic interior full of colour, frills and lots of cosiness. A purple carpet is not something you see often, but here it fits perfectly into the whole. Darling Little Escape is nice little, but spacious enough for two people.

Log cabin boat

Log cabin boat

One of the most unique accommodations on this list is the Log cabin boat. Or rather: boats. You can board your own log cabin boat at four locations in the Netherlands: De Bommelerwaard, De Biesbosch, Het land van Maas en Waal and De Linge. A boating license is not required and any adult can sail it. This way you can get to places you would otherwise not get to so quickly, not even with the shared car. Although the most convenient way to get there is with the shared car, since the Log cabin boats quite remote. You won't get any closer to nature. The boat is quite basic, but comfortable. There is a toilet on board (although you can of course also hang over the edge..) and on the aft deck you will even find a lovely warm outdoor shower. A canoe is included as standard and sup boards can be booked.

Terra Wolde

Terra Wolde

And luxury, yes they know that too; you will find a for-rest lodge including a hot tub. The Bell Tents will remain standing for a while.

pop-up Fruits de Mer in the Hooischuur

pop-up Fruits de Mer in the Hooischuur

Just outside Amsterdam, somewhere between Broek in Waterland and Amsterdam Noord, lies the home of pop-up restaurant Seafood. Fruits de Mer? Sounds familiar, right? Could be right. Last summer, the super successful pop-up between the vines of Wijngaard de Amsteltuin to be found. This winter Fruits de Mer is back with a new location: a historic hay barn. In this hay barn you are in the right place for a touch of France (fish/cheese/wine) just outside – you will need a shared car, so make sure you have a designated driver – 'our' Mokum. French-minded gourmet, what are you waiting for? Quickly, into the hay barn! Spots are limited, so book (quickly) here! Cuber Suites

From 30 Cuber Outdoor Suites can be found in the heart of the Veluwe. The suites are located in various places on the edge of the Hoge Veluwe National Park in Hoenderloo. Truly one of the most beautiful parts of Dutch nature that you can imagine. Promise. Cabiner, Drenthe

Cabiner, Drenthe

Ready for a bit more adventure? Then you've come to the right place. In Drenthe you can spend the night in the middle of the Dutch wilderness, at Cabiner. In the middle of the Drentsche Aa nature reserve, 8 nature houses are hidden. The first tip: take the train to Assen and reserve a shared car there. Once you arrive, the quest continues: with the help of a map, you go through the forest and eventually arrive at your Cabiner. You open this Cabin using a number code and the adventure really begins. The water has to be pumped out of the ground, the wood has to be chopped and the stove has to be stoked. Everything for a warm house, otherwise it would be a shame. The Cabins are all sustainable and there is no wifi available, so really switch it off. You will receive a packing list a few days before departure, but the most important things not to forget are walking shoes, bed linen and towels. Sounds like an adventurous idea, right?

Heart of Green & Cabin Anna on Holenberg

Heart of Green & Cabin Anna on Holenberg

There are plenty of places in the well-known, pleasant Brabant to turn off. After all, that's what we're looking for. One such place is nature camping Heart Green, in the nature reserve De Maashorst. You can camp in nature on meadows or with a view over the water. There are also cozy tents, Tiny Houses, a hostel and living room 't Hart, where you can read a book from the extensive library by the fireplace, for example, or play a game from the games cupboard. Although the design cabins Anna, at the adjacent Holenberg (you check in at Camping Hartje Groen, but the cabins are located in an area called De Holenberg), the hottest news here: crazy houses that open in the middle and where you sleep under the stars all year round: the dream.

Tiny Dream House

Tiny Dream House

The name 'Tiny Dream House' says enough, if we may say so ourselves. This is such a place in the middle of nature where you can completely relax, and has the looks. Park in front of the door - with your shared car of course, and then the party can start. The exterior of this house deserves a beauty prize, but then we haven't even mentioned the interior, every room is beautiful. Tiny Dream House is a house for 4 people with a kitchen, bathroom, hot tub, and pizza oven! How nice is that? And all this on the edge of the Hoge Veluwe National Park. Cross the street and you are in the middle of the park. You enter through the large glass facade and you are immediately in the cozy and bright sitting area. Into The Dream

Into The Dream

Want to stay like a king and wake up with a view of a nature reserve? That's possible Into The Dream. On the edge of a natural garden are the Tiny Houses on Wheels, into the Wild and Into the Willows. Both houses are far apart, so enough privacy. These 2 two-person houses are perfect, everything is there. You know you've come to the right place when the bathrobe, towels and warm socks are ready for you. 35 meters away from the Tiny Houses is a luxury studio with kitchen, shower and toilet. You share this studio with two other visitors. Behind the park garden, between the trees is Tiny House Into the Wild and has a view of the nature reserve. At the back of the park garden between two enormous willows is the second Tiny House, Into the Willows. Now the most important question: Which Tiny are you going for?

Into The Dream

Noma Veluwe

Noma Veluwe

Winter or summer, sometimes you have those holiday homes that are wonderful in every season because they are in a perfect location. This also applies to Noma Veluwe, with 12 beautiful design holiday homes in the forests of Epe in the northeastern part of the Veluwe. Say no more you think, but we have much more to tell you about this nice spot in the forest. So if you are looking for a nice place with friends or the kids (because there is room for a maximum of 5 people!), one of the Noma Veluwe holiday homes could just be your next holiday address.

The holiday homes all have a different owner, so all houses are unique and different in terms of interior. They all come with a large garden and within walking distance of the forest.

Studio Bosk

Studio Bosk

Straight out of an interior design magazine, that is Studio Bosk in the woods of Gaasterland. The forest house is prettier than pretty and wonderfully spacious. There are toys and a sandbox for the children and there are bicycles outside. A high chair and crib are provided. It's that the area is so beautiful, otherwise we would settle down by the wood stove and never go anywhere again.

Still going outside? Then your little one will be very happy at De Hege Gerzen beach pavilion on the IJsselmeer. Of course they can swim in the lake itself, but for the little ones there is also a paddling pool with a slide.

De Wever Lodge, Otterlo

De Wever Lodge, Otterlo

In the heart of the Veluwe, half hidden between the trees and surrounded by one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands, is the Weaver Lodge. A beautiful hotel, small and nice with its own bistro. The Veluwe is actually special enough in itself, but De Wever Lodge goes one step further. Everything here revolves around the love of nature (you are really in the middle of it) and it is craftsmanship and quality that count. It seems a bit as if time has stood still: press pause and only do what you want.

And and and: Wever Lodge now also has two more absolutely gorgeous cottages: Cottage Geluk and Cottage Auping. Nice for yourself and your little group, private terrace with a view of all the nature and a Weltevree stove to sit by the fire until late at night. You can park – with your shared car – RIGHT in front of the door. So enter the cabin, close the door, and go nowhere.

Ory aan Zee, Egmond

Ory aan Zee, Egmond

It is in Egmond all year round nice place to stay. If you treat yourself to a wonderful stay at Ory aan Zee, you won't want to go home at all. The beach is literally within walking distance, for that ultimate get-away feeling.

We classify the accommodations (there are three) at Ory aan Zee as 'unique finds in our own country'. Houses that all tick all the boxes: spacious, fantastic location and well furnished. There is an amazing Dune Lodge, a Beach House right on the beach and a cozy Beach Cottage. All ideal if you are with a (large) family or group of friends looking for a place to get some fresh air and recharge.

Atelier Gaasterland

Atelier Gaasterland

This is the third time we have come across Oudemirdum in this list: maybe there's something in the air? We'll just say it straight away: Friesland is the favourite. Something about roots and the love for beautiful views. And for pure, real, fresh and expansive. That said, we introduce you to a gem in the far north: Atelier Gaasterland. Do you want to go, do you have to go, everything. Atelier Gaasterland There is a retreat in Oudemirdum deluxe. Away from everything, but not back to basics. In fact, the interior of the accommodation exudes so much colorful design that you spontaneously want to change everything at home. More about that later. Let's start with the route there, because that's where true relaxation begins. Gaasterland in the southwest of Friesland is more wooded and rolling than we are used to in the north and is also the region at its most beautiful. Meadows, the dike along the IJsselmeer, cliffs and the occasional farm. Rest.

Atelier Gaasterland

The common denominator of all these addresses? Simple: the best way to get there this winter (comfortably and warmly) is by shared car. That is advantageous, since you only pay for it when you use it. Plus: you can park in front of the door everywhere. Finally, they are all destinations where you go because of the accommodations, but that does not mean that you might want to explore the area after a few nights. We understand, and the shared car is ideal for that too. You can find a shared car in almost every Dutch city, and so there is always a shared car available near the cabin of your choice: read more at startmetdelen.nl.
