The tips for fun stops during a road trip through Skåne, southern Sweden
This year we will not be touring France, on a late summer trip to a Spanish city or on winter holidays in Tyrol. Skåne, Sweden's southernmost province, is the tip of the year for your next holiday. Or better yet, maybe you landed on this article because you Skåne already planned (lucky you!).
Skåne has everything you need: beautiful nature, white and golden beaches, and nice cities. In terms of food and drinking culture, they have it all figured out and they even seem to be ahead of the Netherlands. And best of all: the Skåne region is a wonderful holiday destination and every season has its own charm. That's why we put all the tips in front of you roadtrip by Skåne listed for you.
It is very easy to travel from the Netherlands to... Skåne to travel. You can go to Copenhagen by car or bus via Germany or by plane from the Netherlands to Copenhagen. Once in Copenhagen, you can take the Øresund Bridge, which will take you to Malmö in about twenty minutes. Malmö is an ideal starting point and end point for you roadtrip, with plenty of options to rent cars.
When you visit Skåne, there is really only one thing you need to keep in mind before you can check off the tips on this list and that is fika. Try one at least once a day fika to plan, where local residents come together for a cup of coffee or tea with cinnamon rolls (cinnamon buns) or cookies. Immediately gives you a reason to try out all that sweetness.
Biggest chance that Malmö is both the starting point and end point of your journey. This city used to be known for its herring fishing (remember the herring, we'll get to that later) and as a shipbuilding center. Not very fragrant and floral. But tadam: after a long time Malmö back in the game as one of the nicest cities in the north.
Today, Malmö is a climate-friendly and relaxed city with the Scandinavian cool touch. Thanks to the Øresund Bridge, which takes you from the heart of Copenhagen to the heart of Malmö within half an hour, this bicycle-friendly city has an impressive location. Are they also lucky that the sandy beaches are just around the corner and the farmland is so fertile that creative chefs are constantly opening exciting, new and progressive restaurants. We love Malmö, which is why we collected all Malmö tips in a separate list on the website.
say cheese! We say yes to the cheese Soldiertorpets Mejeri in Hyby. Maria, the founder and owner, is known in the region (actually throughout Sweden and Denmark) as the producer of cheese in Skåne. The team of Soldiertorpets Mejeri produces cheese in its purest form, using the nearby neighbor of the farm (about eight kilometers away) for milk. They transform that milk into tasty, unique cheeses. They do well. It is not without reason that this cheese has been awarded various prizes, including Nordic Cheese, and prizes in world championships.
All those prizes are nice, but what good do they do during your roadtrip? Maria and her husband Carlos have a shop on the farm, where you can buy cheeses and other products and where they organize cheese tastings and events. By reservation you can visit the couple's greenhouse for a nice one cheese tasting.
The route to Smygehuk Hostel & Lighthouse is already a holiday in itself. The lighthouse of this hostel completes it completely. Smygehuk is located at the southernmost point in Sweden, located in an old lighthouse keeper's house from 1883. Owners Joanna and Mick run the hostel, and although it is currently a bit old-fashioned (but very cozy!), the plans for the future are big. . Two rooms in the hostel have already been renovated make over and they hope to create a restaurant with a beautiful view. And one official teaser of the menu for the upcoming restaurant promises with the herring sandwich (Yes, a lot of herring here in the region, but this was the best we ate) a lot of good stuff. And then about that view: the fresh breeze reveals the sea behind it. Next to the hostel, Smygehuk is within walking distance with an old fishing port, smokehouse, café and a number of shops.
A little further inland than the southernmost tip of Sweden lies Sweden's southernmost city: Trelleborg. And a little further away are green vineyards and rapeseed fields, a five-minute drive from the sandy beaches of Scania. It Weinbergs Hotel at Idala Farm is located in a traditional Swedish farmhouse with four wings among fields and orchards. The old farmhouse from 1859 with twelve uniquely furnished and decorated rooms really looks like a fairytale.
We can't stay away from the hotel restaurant either. In the afternoon you will spot the chefs in the accompanying vegetable garden, and during dinner and breakfast you will see the locally grown and cultivated products from the vegetable garden on your plate. The owners and star chefs cook with vegetables in the leading role, although they also know how to handle fish and meat. And they know how to combine that damn well with wines and alcoholic drinks. In four words: party on your plate.
Sweet, sweeter, sweetest: go for it Hallongarden. This farm sells everything from homemade cakes and biscuits to juice, jam, marmalade, ketchup, chutney and vinegar. The common thread running through the products are blackberries and raspberries, which they in turn grow on the farm. The products are of course a good souvenir. You can also have a good lunch there with an ice cream.
But even more fun is that you can pick your own berries and flowers at Hallongården. And in autumn and winter you make candles in the stable café.
Seeing the colored beach houses is something you should be able to tick off when you are in Sweden. In the southwest corner of Skåne you will find the Falsterbo peninsula with its seaside resorts Skanör and Falsterbo. And you want to go there just for the beach houses. On the relatively quiet beach Ljunghusen beach the houses are a bit dilapidated and in the busier Skanör they are painted perfectly colored. You also get a white sandy beach, nice for a walk. You will also find several restaurants in the harbor at the popular sandy beach of Skanör.
You drive through the wheat fields to Landskrona. You would almost think you are in the Netherlands, because the landscape of southern Sweden is almost completely flat. Landskrona also has similarities with the Netherlands, but in the Swedish way. In the city you will find an old citadel (Yes, they also have a little bit of history in Skåne), moats, traditional allotments, the old and the new water tower and a row of cannons on the quay. From Landskrona you can take the boat up and down to the island of Ven and that is a summer tip. The island is historically important and next to the local museum on the island is the landscape bicycle-proof. It should be, because cars are not allowed on the island.
Cute villages and white beaches, that's how we now know the west coast of Sweden. This is also the case with the idyllic fishing village The brush houses. The fishing nets are hanging to dry, the smell of fish & chips comes towards you and the sports enthusiasts run in a sports outfit on the road next to the water. Borstahusen is a family-friendly destination, partly thanks to the Mötesplats Borstahusen campsite, right on the beach.
Golf enthusiasts will also enjoy themselves here. Food lovers too, by the way, Kvarteret Erikstorps is the associated restaurant next to the Borstahusen Golf Course with dishes from locally produced, organic ingredients. Although you can also order fries and a burger.
In our opinion it includes: hiking when you are in Sweden. Although the south of Sweden has so much more to offer than just nature, you should definitely visit this one hike should put it on your to-do list. The Glumslövs hills and Hilleshögs valleys can be found in the northern part of the Skåneledenpad between Landskrona and Helsingborg. Residents also call it the most beautiful stretch of coastline in Skåne with breathtaking views.
You can start your walk in the fishing village of Bortahusen mentioned above, make a stop at Kvarteret, walk up the coastal slopes, cross the forest ('real' forests, which they have in the north of Sweden, they do not have here), and then at a nice view a fika to plan.
Hotel 1622 radiates tranquility. It adults only hotel is located right next to Rydebäck beach. On the pier near the sea you can see hotel guests (despite the not too warm weather) diving into the sea. No wonder that the hotel's associated spa is also busy (you can use it at an additional cost). The rooms of the clean hotel are tastefully decorated with comfortable beds and a spacious shower.
With an excellent restaurant at the hotel and a beautiful terrace with regular live music, it is a good place for the (late) summer evenings in Sweden.
But licorice is very Dutch, isn't it? Certainly, but they also like it in Sweden. Martin discovered licorice at a festival in 2009. In 2011 he founded Paint zipper factories (the licorice factory) to sell premium, gluten-free licorice. Now Martin exports his 'black gold' to Scandinavia, the US, Germany, the UK and France.
The factory, which is also a shop, hosts licorice tastings and tours that last about three hours and show the entire process: from growing to packaging and eating. With the aim of making Helsingborg a liquorice paradise, Martin organizes liquorice festivals and collaborates with 25 local restaurants.
The Skåne regions have a microclimate. The wine border is moving further north as a result of climate changes, making it easier to produce good wine. The same goes for Lottenlund Estate from owner Tina Berthelsen. After a trip to Tuscany in 2010, her dream came true and a few years later there are 30.000 vines in Allerum, near Helsingborg.
White, rosé and red wines are produced on the estate. Unfortunately, it is not yet possible to buy wine on the estate, but she does organize wine tastings.
The licorice capital, sounds good. I don't mean to say that you can't get anything else in Helsingborg, because in addition to drop city, Helsingborg is an innovative port city and a nice coastal town.
This is where you close roadtrip perfect with a portion of vitamins. Bee Bruket Kaffebar and Café score your lunch or luxury breakfast. Good, locally sourced ingredients are central to most of the menu. You sit comfortably among the locals and students and there is also a cozy courtyard.
