Road tripping on Bonaire

What is Bonaire known for, among other things? Its donkeys. Just outside Kralendijk lies the Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary. Not a tourist trap, but a vast open landscape where more than 400 donkeys roam freely. Admission is €6. Local guide Roy explained how these animals were once neglected. Now? Okay, thrill seekersThis is your moment: blokarting on Sorobon beach, Bonaire's best-kept secret. Imagine: a three-wheeled kart with a sail, tearing along 7 km of white sand in 30-degree temperatures. Blokarting yourself is, of course, much more fun than just standing on the shore and watching. It's surprisingly simple: if you've ever sailed, you'll pick it up in minutes—same principles, different playing field. Never touched a sail? No problem. After a short tutorial, you'll be off and riding along the beach. Easy does it.
From the south pier, take the unpaved road, only doable with a 4x4. Hundreds of flamingos parade in bright pink, foraging in the saltwater. The morning light? Magical. Combine it with a stop at the authentic slave huts; tiny, heartbreaking stories about salt workers. Drive towards Rincon, Bonaire's oldest village. Stop at Seru Largu for a panorama that brings it all together: sea, village, hills. Here, Bonaire still feels truly Bonaire. The day ends at the Brandaris Lighthouse in Rincon. Winding road uphill, park, a short climb. And then: sunset, perfect day.
