Sal, Cape Verde: From soulful live music to turtles in the moonlight

A week spent on Sal, one of the 12 islands that make up the African country of Cape Verde, is like landing in a warm bath: year-round sunshine, seawater above North Sea temperatures, and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. On this island of Cape Verde's Schiermonnikoog (but with a lot more soul), it's all about wind, watersports, and that endless sense of tranquility.

First things first: your hotel

First things first: your hotel

Want to land in the water and in comfort without a care in the world? Choose a resort with direct beach access, plenty of pools to splash around in, and 24/7 service. This Bart stayed in ROYAL Horizon Ponta Sino in Santa Maria. This hotel is located just far enough from the bustling center of Santa Maria that you can experience all the peace and quiet of the world, with luxury.

The (free, because all inclusive) cocktail you absolutely must try here? The Caipirinha Kriolu, made with local rum and honey liqueur.

Language & culture

Language & culture

Cape Verde is a blend of two worlds, its African soul mingled with Portuguese blood. On Sal, you hear and see this in everything. Portuguese and Kriolu (the local language) intermingle, music and dance on every corner. Saying "tud dret?" (are you alright?) is guaranteed to get a smile in return.

Island hotspots

Island hotspots

Santa Maria It's the tourist heart. Busy, narrow streets, vendors on every corner with beads and fans, restaurants and bars where live music ushers in the evening. Chaotic? Sometimes. But charming nonetheless. From the pier to the fish market, you can feel the island's rhythm here.

Asparagus It's the down-to-earth heart of Cape Verde. No beach clubs or umbrellas, but markets brimming with vegetables, street noise, and the locals who truly keep the island going. If you want a taste of the "real" Cape Verde, start here.

Palmeira In many ways, it's the opposite of Santa Maria: small, quiet, and down-to-earth. Everything revolves around fish. Men haul their catch ashore with chattering nets, children play on the dock, and women clean octopus with the precision of a Lisbon chef. Fishing boats bob in the bay, along with a few sailboats belonging to adventurers who dock here instead of Santa Maria.

Eat & Drink

Eat & Drink

On Sal is the Buddy Bar The place where it all comes together. Tourists, locals, musicians, and curious passersby. Live music every night, powerful voices, and guitar riffs that would even raise an eyebrow at Keith Richards. The atmosphere? Raw, warm, unfiltered.

A beach bar just the way you want it: plastic chairs, sand under your feet and cold Strelas (the local beer) on the table. Palm Beach Join us for grilled fish and sunsets that make your beer taste even better.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of Santa Maria lies At PastisA restaurant focused on meat. Absolutely delicious meat. Intimate, with a flavorful kitchen and a memorable wine list. No sea view, but plenty of character. The perfect spot for an evening where time is nothing more than an idea.

Activities

Activities

  1. Beach beach beach

On the coast of Santa Maria, kites soar like colorful dots through the air, and you can hear the wind singing in their lines. You could plan a day full of action here, but don't feel guilty if you choose to lie down, breathe, and forget everything around you.

  1. Water sports: from kitesurfing to snorkeling sessions

Sal Island breathes Watersports. Anyone who's ever wanted to learn windsurfing or kitesurfing can do so here: warm water, steady trade winds, and instructors who exude sunshine. Prefer something a little more relaxed? Grab a paddleboard, snorkel among the rocks near Ponta Preta, or take a catamaran out to sea.

Check the flags and conditions: the current and wind can change faster than your playlist here.

Day tour

Day tour

After a few days of inactivity, the rest of the island beckons. The easiest thing to do? Book a minibus island tour. Or—for those who prefer to hit the gas—hop on a quad bike. You decide your level of adventure. The stops you'll make as you blast along sandy paths will bring you face to face with sharks, a salt mine with a salt lake, a desert mirage, and the natural pool of Buracona (Blue Eye Cave).

Botanical tranquility

Botanical tranquility

An oasis of green? You can hardly believe it on sandy Sal. Yet, it is. The botanical garden/zoo Viveiro Botanical Garden It's bursting with greenery, as dozens of tropical plants and flowers flourish here. Among the leaves, you'll find rescued donkeys, goats, monkeys, peacocks, and tortoises that seem to dictate the island's pace. Be careful, though: some plants sting harder than the sun burns here.

Watch sea turtles hatch from their eggs

Watch sea turtles hatch from their eggs

From July to October, the Ponta Preta coast transforms into a live nature film. You just have to imagine the voice of biologist David Attenborough. During these months, sea turtles hatch from their eggs in the sand, slowly but purposefully heading towards the ocean. Sometimes at sunset, sometimes in the dead of night. Local organizations watch over the nests and protect them from poachers. It remains one of those rare moments when you just pause.
