This is why you want to go to SalzburgerLand in 2024 (all regions at a glance)
In the heart of Austria lies a region that we would rather not reveal to too many people. But we wouldn't be Barts Boekje if we didn't just do that anyway. Pinky promise I hope you don't tell anyone else, because we prefer to keep this region to ourselves. Anyway, it is SalzburgerLand, with the most beautiful nature and adventure for the whole family. Whether you are a nature lover, a sports enthusiast or a gourmet, SalzburgerLand has something for everyone. Hopping from region to region to get the most out of your holiday is the best option to really do anything and everything during your stay.
The regions are ideally located together and are easily accessible from the Netherlands, whether you travel by car, train or plane.
In this article we take you through all the regions of SalzburgerLand and you will discover why this year is the perfect time to pack your bags and go here.
Think of mountain lakes with a turquoise color that reminds you of the seas of the Philippines. Listen to the splash of waterfalls, comparable to (or even better than) those on the island of Bali. Look up at the snow-capped mountain peaks that rival those in winter. Voilà , you are in Grossarltal.
The adventure, aka Your holiday you will never forget starts with the journey to the valley. The winding roads above the iconic Liechtenstein Gorge are just a taste of what is to come. What is to come is what you prepare yourself for. You can work hard with no less than 400 kilometers of hiking trails and 160 kilometers of mountain bike trails. It's no surprise that they call Grossarltal the ultimate playground for adventurers and nature lovers. But quiet is also an option: enjoy breathtaking mountain lakes, waterfalls and the peaks of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Oooh and then there is the charming village of Grossarl, with a mix of fantastic hotels, cozy apartments and cozy holiday homes. So much to do: from the cable cars for a quick ride uphill to completing all the hiking trails. For adrenaline seekers, there are options such as mountain biking, mountain karting, and taking a refreshing dip in the attraction pool. Or you can just relax on the Gaudi Alm, the ultimate playground in the Alps.

Man, those mountains in the Salzburger Sportwelt are a treat. For example, the Pongauer Mountains - located in the Salzburger Sportwelt - are an ancient natural and cultural landscape that you can discover via well-marked trails. And believe us, you will. What you also want to do is walk to the source of the river Enns or to the largest mountain lake in the Eastern Alps - the Tappenkarsee, a walk for your bucket list. But how do we get those kids on the walking route? Oh, it's a piece of cake with the theme routes such as 'Alles Alm', where you learn more about what lives on the mountain along the way. Another one of those you-must-experience-it-at-once is the Rossbrand in Radstadt, aka the mountain with the most beautiful view in the region. Is walking a hassle? Nope, Salzburger Sportwelt also sweeps that excuse off track by the cable cars that allow you to climb only part of the mountain (or only descend) and you can use the Sportwelt hiking bus and the Alm Taxis.
And then… Clatter! What? A fantastic climbing course in Wagrain-Kleinarl consisting of seven different courses with different levels of difficulty. Ok, another active tip: in the Salzburg Mountain Peaks Game, hikers climb seven peaks in the region in a fun but also challenging way.

Yes, how come you can't compare Flachau with a beach holiday? No, okay, you shouldn't want to either. But isn't a dip in a mountain lake instead of the high seas, climbing the most beautiful mountain peaks instead of sand-blowing dunes and (e-)biking instead of hours in a warm car to the next hotspot much better?
Flachau is known for its beautiful alpine meadows, which are especially popular with families. Hiking in this region means more than putting one foot in front of the other, because Flachau is a hiking destination that is among the best in Austria. You have the Marbachalmen, a walk along a crystal clear mountain stream and on mountains such as the Grießenkar, the Lackenkogel or the Spirzinger you can walk to an altitude of more than 2000 meters. Put on good walking shoes for the kids and maybe they will even join you. Otherwise, the gondolas (Startjet 1 and 2) will take you straight into the walking area. There is more to experience with those gondolas. You will find the family-friendly Flori's adventure course at the Starjet 1 mountain station with fun puzzles and play stations for your kids. Even more action? In addition to mountain biking, you can also do rafting, canyoning, climbing, stand-up paddling and mountain karting.
Get into nature from our country as quickly as possible? Then we will send you to St. Johann in Salzburg, about sixty kilometers from the German border. You can go there alone, with family or friends, but it is ideal for families. Think of cozy hotels with practical family rooms, the largest shopping street in the Pongau, but also nature ideally suited to families. How do you introduce nature to families? They are being smart here in St. Johann. You can be spooky at 1.750 meters thanks to the 'ghost mountain' in St. Johann. The cable car, train and hiking trails with breathtaking views, together with more than 40 adventure stations, provide a high level of entertainment. Another enterprising activity, ideal for kids, is JODY's tree trail: climbing, scrambling, balancing – all ages can have a great time here. And the tourist attractions are endless. For example, there is also a mini golf course that has all the sights recreated to scale; This allows you to tick off all the sights in no time.
And parents no worries, there are also activities that you will probably engage in. The Liechtensteinklamm, for example, is one of the longest, deepest and most impressive gorges in the Alps with a particularly beautiful waterfall, moss-covered rocks and the rainbow that appears when the sun shines. Kids go to a course for a day, and then they can come along to this spectacle, deal?
It is sad to see how nature is changing in many places. In Rauris things are a bit brighter, because here nature is still as it was long ago – untouched and pure. You can enjoy it for a long time, because as a hiker you can choose from hiking trails of all levels of difficulty, both in the valley and to the mountain peaks. It is even more exciting to hike a few stages of the Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail. Stages 14 and 15 of this trail run straight through the valley from Rauris to Kolm Saigurn. If you walk the entire trail, you will cover 17 kilometers in 275 stages: that will take some time, but it will be worth the blisters.
Too hot in the summer? Bad excuse, because you pass no fewer than three hundred springs with cooling water. And they are all beautiful and diverse with a thundering waterfall or stream. Another beautiful valley is that near Seidlwinkl, where the alpine landscape is particularly impressive. You will also find a special path where you can learn all about water, including the spring water of Rauris.
It is also special that the Rauris valley has been the center of gold mining in Austria for centuries, where you can mine gold yourself. And what we book well in advance is a tour with a National Park Ranger.

On one side of the valley there are two quiet side valleys in the national park. Habachtal proves that you don't have to go all the way to Africa to go on an excursion with a ranger, because there are plenty of animals and plants to be found here and the rangers are happy to take you along. You can also look for emeralds in the Habachtal (unique in Europe!). Or you can opt for the (e-)bike & hike tour, where you cycle to the end of the valley and from there you go uphill on foot to one of the many Hütte and Alms that you will find there.
You will definitely achieve 10.000 steps here, because walking is the most fun thing in this region. A few more steps? The long-distance hiking trail 'Hohe Tauern Panorama Trail' will not disappoint.
But what do we do with those kids we brought with us? No worries, plenty to do. For example, at the top of the cable car on the Wildkogel is 'Kogel-Mogel': an adventure playground and the start of the mountain karting route to the valley. Looking for a scoop? Okay, let's do it. At the middle station you can also choose to go down the mountain on long steel slides. You can then relax in the sun loungers by the deep blue reservoirs.
Who what where Hochkönig? You should go around the villages of Maria Alm, Dienten and Mühlbach for cycling on quiet roads or a walk on the alpine pastures. There are countless routes for e-bikes (including free charging points) and mountain bikes. As a hiker you are guaranteed to get your money's worth with more than 300 kilometers of certified hiking trails. Already exhausted from the idea of having to climb up? The cable cars are there for a reason and they also run at full speed in the summer.
We already talked about the kids, is it fun for them too? Duh, thanks to the Hochkönig swing park with swings in the waterfalls, playgrounds and the longest marble track in SalzburgerLand (550 meters), that is certainly the case.
With the HochkönigCard it all becomes a lot cheaper thanks to attractive discounts or even free attractions and events in the region. For example, six cable cars, two outdoor swimming pools, the Hochkönig hiking bus and all public transport in Pinzgau are free with the HochkönigCard if you stay with one of the partner companies.
