Fairytale location: DODDENDAEL SLOT in Ewijk (province of Gelderland), near Nijmegen
No idea what is going on, but lately we have been going to those real wedding locations for a weekend away, even though we have long been provided with a ring and snow-white wedding dress. But of course you can keep dreaming, and especially keep tipping! Like this one, Doddendael Castle in Ewijk, close to Nijmegen. The perfect base to explore the student city (which we recently did by the way, all tips quickly here of course!). First things first: your room at this Fairytale location: Doddendael Castle in Ewijk (province of Gelderland), near Nijmegen.
10 kilometers west of Nijmegen and you are at the fairytale Doddendael Castle. A lock, yes. Strong and proud, and that in our own country. It is a castle, with an exquisite history that has been given a more than fantastic 21st century update. The building is half-hidden in the forests of Gelderland. Category 'must know'. The castle itself consists largely of a white plastered main building dating back to 1379, although this was repeatedly burned down, rebuilt and rebuilt over the years. The last residents were an artist duo – creativity is still in the air. Sigh. Can it be any more perfect? Yes: you are welcome all year round, for a romantic overnight stay for the two of you, a family trip and of course a wedding, because that is what the place seems to be made for.
Slot Doddendael has been used as a catering destination since 1977, after which the couple Jan Willem and Fabienne 't Hooft-Braam took over in 2012. They turned it into the small-scale, high-quality, tasteful and loving address that it is today. You can stay in one of the two charming guest rooms, and the outbuilding is a dream wedding location. Lunch and dinner in the accessible Brasserie Baronne in the vaulted cellar is a treat, thanks in part to the Meat Market concept: choose your Black Angus beef and then decide how you want it prepared - the chef will do the rest. Anyone have anything to do next Sunday?
If we had a choice, we would have a winter wedding (again). And then fingers crossed for snow.
