Terrace in Gelderland? We have! These are the finest terraces in Gelderland city and country

The province with lots of greenery and two of the most Burgundian cities in the Netherlands? Gelderland! The ultimate terraces? These are the finest terraces in Gelderland, both in town and countryside:

Arnhem

Arnhem

  • FortVieroh how we love A good terrace by the water. In Arnhem, you simply must (must? Yes, must) go to FortVier, a beach bar without a real beach, but with real sand and a real beach bar. vibes on the edge of the city. The drinks board here is highly recommended. Just saying.
  • Zafvino: in the heart of Arnhem, there you will find Zafvino's terrace. You imagine yourself completely in a Mediterranean atmosphere. How? Delicious Italian food and the wine list is huge, we like! A cozy terrace with long wooden tables and benches where you can relax all evening (under a heater). A really great place for a long, fun evening.
  • STAN: a place where there is always a lively atmosphere. The terrace is huge, which means that on sunny days you can always find a spot. You sit right in the middle of the city's hustle and bustle here, perfect for people-watching and enjoying a nice drink.
  • City villa SonsbeekWhat a fantastic view you find here. In lovely Sonsbeek Park, on top of the hill, you look out over the entire city. From breakfast to dinner, in short, a great spot. You can completely unwind here, surrounded by greenery.
  • DAVO: for craft beer lovers, the DAVO tasting room is a good spotJust outside the busiest shopping streets, you'll find a wonderfully spacious and sunny terrace with an industrial vibe. There's a relaxed atmosphere with long wooden tables and a large selection of house beers straight from the tap. Delicious with a tasty burger.

Nijmegen

Nijmegen

  • In the BarracksIn Nijmegen-Oost, you will find the terrace of In de Kazerne, located on (as the name suggests) an old barracks site. It is wonderfully spacious with plenty of greenery, and the sun shines on the terrace for a large part of the day. It is an informal, relaxed spot where you can just as easily pull up a chair for a good lunch as for drinks or dinner later in the evening.
  • CredibleLocated right in the city center, the colorful Credible building is practically impossible to miss. The lively atmosphere hits you immediately, and it is always buzzing with energy. The vibe is delightfully informal, the staff is genuinely friendly, and the menu is full of tasty treats to share. Perfect for a sunny afternoon of people-watching with a cold drink within reach.
  • Baiana (Bemmel)For the ultimate holiday feeling, head to beach bar Baiana, just across the Waal in Bemmel. With your feet in the sand, you have a beautiful view of the river and the Nijmegen skyline from the terrace. It is a wonderfully casual spot for young and old where you can relax all day long with a good glass of wine or a cocktail. Our absolute favorite for a tropical vibe close to home.

  • AtelierThis place is known for the pleasant transition from a good lunch to an extensive drinks reception with snacks later in the day. The terrace is wonderfully centrally located in the city, making it the ideal spot to sit in the sun with a drink in hand. Uncomplicated, welcoming, and always a good atmosphere.
  • Restaurant De Hemel: the absolute classic you never have to think twice about: De Hemel. Tucked away in an atmospheric courtyard just behind the market, you will find one of the most beautiful and atmospheric terraces in Nijmegen. Surrounded by the old, monumental walls, you can enjoy their own brewed beers, a good charcuterie board, or an extensive lunch in complete tranquility. A timeless favorite that truly never gets old.
  • Oortjeshekken (Ooij)To enjoy a drink on a terrace in the middle of nature, cycle into the Ooijpolder towards Oortjeshekken. This charming spot features a beautiful, idyllic terrace under the trees, right by the dike and the water of Bisonbaai. The atmosphere here is ultimately relaxed: walkers and cyclists mingle for a slice of cake, a tasty lunch, or a cold craft beer. The perfect escape from the city.

Doetinchem

Doetinchem

  • Restaurant Local: in the stunning hotel Villa Spacious View you will find this delightful spot. With a Michelin Green Star in the bag (meaning they cook very consciously, using local products and as green as can be, with a strong focus on vegetables), you are in for a more than pleasant experience here. And you can enjoy a long, leisurely meal on the sunny terrace with a view of the garden and the fountain.
  • Di Mina: this terrace in the city garden of Boutique Hotel Villa Wanrooy, is the place to be for an afternoon of drinks. They have a very good selection of wines from Europe and the Achterhoek (nice!), nice beers from local brewers and a great food menu.
  • Lizzie's PavilionYou will find Lizzie's Paviljoen on the banks of the Oude IJssel. This is the place in Doetinchem for an instant holiday feeling close to the city. From the large, relaxed lounge terrace, you have a wonderful view of the river while enjoying a good lunch, a cold drink, or dinner. The atmosphere is super casual, making it very easy to hang around here all afternoon on a sunny day.

Groenlo + Millinger on the Rhine

Groenlo + Millinger on the Rhine

  • well-located (Groenlo): good food, drinks, having drinks, boating, celebrating a party, meeting, yes at well-located can do it all. A large riverside garden with its own greenhouse for fresh herbs. One patio table in the garden, the other semi-covered overlooking the Groenlose canal (with heaters), fine!
  • Millinger Tea Garden (Millinger aan de Rhine)Little steps, winding paths, hidden nooks. At Millinger Theetuin, it is delightful to wander around and get lost in the fairytale-like garden. Stylish cushions with lovely prints; it feels almost un-Dutch. Almost?! Absolutely; at Millinger, you are transported to Morocco for a moment. But with a hint of overgrown plants and dazzling greenery. We think we’ve fallen a little in love…

Winterswijk

Winterswijk

  • The Generous BlacksmithYou will find this gem in the hamlet of Woold. The location of this terrace is truly worthwhile: wonderfully situated by the Boven Slinge. You can rent a boat here—how fun! After this boat trip, you can visit De Gulle Smid for coffee, lunch, drinks, and dinner. What is on the menu? All kinds of regional delicacies. This is the ideal place to rest during a hike. A hike? Yes, you heard that right! There is no shortage of hiking routes in this wooded area. It is also highly recommended to enjoy a drink here with family or friends, or to escape the hustle and bustle of the day for a while.
  • LEV. by Mike: when in Gelderland, then stop at Lev by Mike in Winterswijk, promise, okay? Wonderful location, with your toes almost in the landscaped beach pool, and delicious food. As they say themselves – good food, good mood.  Bacon to our mouth. Go go go, Winterswijk.

Borculo + Ruurlo

Borculo + Ruurlo

  • Restaurant de Ölliemölle (Borculo)For a generous dose of Achterhoek charm, head to Borculo. This terrace is situated right next to a historic watermill and directly on the rippling waters of the Berkel. The atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed and informal. It is the perfect spot to settle down on a sunny day for a good lunch, a cup of coffee with cake, or a cold drink with a view of the turning waterwheel. A beautiful, peaceful corner of Gelderland.
  • Avenarius (Ruurlo): Is it a hotel? Is it a restaurant? Both! Best of both worlds, we'll just say. Terrace? Simple, but spacious, so you can relax with your table companion. And feel free to continue snoozing, the beds seem to sleep like clouds…
