the Presidential Train: accidental Wes Anderson on the track across Portugal
Once you go nuts over the most beautiful train journeys (*raises hand*), you never go back. Now a picture of a train journey is one thing, but if the train and the train experience itself are also worth it... Well, then there is little else to do than just go, right?
If we talk about European (well, you get the point) have trains, must The Belmond British Pullman definitely on your list. An absolute 'accidental Wes Anderson' dream. And now we discovered another one, just (2021) restored and reopened: the Presidential Train in Portugal. Here too, an unprecedented and beautiful backdrop on the track full of historical references (which are now nothing but luxurious) and, again, that cinematic Wes Anderson evoke recognition.
Of course the title says it all: we are talking 'bout the presidential train, the crown jewel of the Portuguese railways, in which kings, presidents, heads of state and popes sat. The train was built in 1890 and officially retired sometime in the late twentieth century. A shame, they thought thirty years later, and in 2021 the five luxury carriages - completely renovated and adapted to all current (safety) standards - will be running again.
It's like stepping into a time capsule, including the smell, the music and the correct, neat staff.
Want to take a ride? We understand: you board at 11.15 at the São Bento train station in the Portuguese city Porto (highly recommended anyway!). After the necessary oe's and aah's, the train leaves at 11.45 and lunch and wine follow each other. At 15.00 p.m. the train stops at the famous Quinta do Vesuvio estate known for its port for – of course – a tasting and then driving back – with live entertainment – to Porto around 18.00 p.m. You will be back there at 21.30:XNUMX PM. Look, if that isn't an entertainment day through Portugal, then we don't know what is.
