Things to do on the Veluwe (GELDERSE REGIONS)
Viva Veluwe! To be fair... We have to dig very deep if we want to name an area in the Netherlands that we are more enthusiastic about than the Veluwe. This is partly due to the fact that the largest nature reserve in the Netherlands is worth visiting every season, and we always discover something new there. The thing is that it is a party for every age on the Veluwe - it is impossible to find an address or activity that you like. And so we recently exchanged city life for a while for all the green (and yellow and brown and red and orange - hello autumn!) the Veluwe.
Can't you see the Veluwe forest for all the trees? Recognizable. And that's why we've listed all the best ones below things to do on the Veluwe for you. Here it comes: these are the nicest things to do on the Veluwe.
Did you know that you can cut your own route straight through? Gelderland can you put together via Barts Boekje? This is how it works: go to 'My Booklet' on the right of the site, log in, and go to it Gelderland Regions Booklet. Here you can add your favorite addresses and tips, or remove the options we have already given you, and thus create your own Booklet.
Paper here! For the more urban vibe we go to Apeldoorn (Apeldoorn is a really nice city, more about that soon). Of course you can stroll through the old center, sit down at one of the many cozy cafés and restaurants or do a bit of shopping, but that is always possible. No, opt for a better culture experience, because that is also possible in Apeldoorn. It CODA Paper Art museum for example. Paper art here, ranging from small works of art, objects and jewelry to life-size installations. The works of art were created by no fewer than 22 artists from home and abroad. Impressive? Certainly! Where you thought paper was just paper, you're wrong. The exhibition shows how many different perspectives and dimensions there are in paper art and highlights various themes from these works of art. Definitely go if you're in the area!
While we are on the road, a night in Apeldoorn cannot be missed - because there is plenty to do. So just call Apeldoorn? In this case transfer to Zenzez. A small contemporary boutique hotel, in a beautiful old Art Nouveau building. And in the ideal location in Apeldoorn: at the intersection between the heart of the city and the quiet Parkenbuurt. Zenzez is a place that immediately gives you a warm feeling. Small but nice, and where the owners have put blood, sweat and tears into it (and still do). keyword here is central: (almost) everything is just a stone's throw away. Less than a ten-minute walk to the city center of Apeldoorn, where the streets are full of boutiques, cafes and plenty of restaurants.
Once in Apeldoorn we pay a visit Palace Het Loo not about. It is surprisingly fun and interesting to delve into the history of the Royal Family. Het Loo Palace has a rich and lavish past and was even inhabited by members of the Royal Family until 1975. Het Loo has been open to the public as a National Museum since 1984. Since then, various exhibitions and events have taken place. One of those exhibitions is 'the Oranges' where you learn more about the history of the, yes, Oranjes.
In addition to the exhibition, you can also take an audio tour of all the rooms in the Palace and walk through the beautiful adjacent gardens. Don't forget to take a look at the roof terrace where you have the most beautiful view of both the gardens and the front of the Palace. Of course, the kids have also been taken into account: with a cheerful court aka Junior Palace, there is plenty to do with interactive games for the children.
After all 'sight seeing' we exchange the city for greenery, lots of greenery! And that's why we sleep White Birch Nature Hotel. Where you can sleep between the trees and enjoy a delicious dinner in the restaurant. We use as many local products as possible here, which you will certainly see on your plate, for example with a piece of meat from the local butcher. In addition to dinner, Witte Berken also has a nice breakfast with fresh rolls, yogurt with fruit and they even serve you an 'oat cappu'. We love.
Another highly recommended thing to do when you are on the Veluwe is one of the master classes with a nature guide André Donker. During the masterclass you will be taken into the world of insects, birds and mammals in the forest hut, also called 'Keet Bush', and you will learn everything about the origins of the landscape, its cultural history, nature and/or wildlife management. . It all sounds complicated, doesn't it? In addition to this masterclass, André Donker also provides a forest breakfast, brunch or lunch and you can also enjoy a delicious forest dinner for two made by André and his wife, followed by a bike ride.
Relaxing on the Veluwe is certainly possible, but sitting still is not for everyone, and that is why the mountain bike tours are MTB Club Epe the perfect solution to best of both worlds to experience: the beautiful nature of the Veluwe and being active. During the mountain bike tour you cycle with the guide along the unknown pearls of Epe, and you will be told all kinds of things about this beautiful area. And… With a bit of luck you might even spot a wild boar. Please note: you have to be a bit sporty for this.
Mountain biking makes you hungry. That works out well: in the middle of the Epe nature reserve you can make a pit stop at the pancake restaurant The Ox Stable. For the less sporty among us; don't worry! You can also get here on foot or by car. In addition to the wide range of pancakes and sandwiches, there is also plenty to do for the kids and they will certainly have a great time in the accompanying playground.
