Best of Bart: vintage for the home
We have already opened a book here about our favorite websites, stores and Instagram shops that are the most beautiful vintage jewelry to sell. We worked on a list of beautiful, you-want-it vintage looks for kids and we happen to know perfectly well where we want to go (scrolling) for unique vintage finds for your home. Not only the thrift stores (although that's where you make the very best real finds, but you just need a little more patience), but especially those addresses that have already done the preliminary work for you. A little convenience, a little pre-styling and a whole latta or unique design.
We are addicted to vintage shopping via Instagram. Not surprising: there are a number of great accounts that surprise time and time again. A list:
May we call her almost the OG among vintage accounts? Fortune Flea in Amsterdam East. Or for us: Zoë. She sources the most beautiful items for you from France. Her space is open for one weekend every month so you can see all the beautiful things in real life. Fortune Flea
Fussy People thingsWe're already crazy about this shop because of the catchy name. How shall we describe the selection of items? Simply 10/10. Beautiful stainless steel tables with matching chairs. Bruno Ray chairs, but also vintage Ikea cabinets. You know – those nice ones with the wave running through them. You've got us, fussy!
juki – another one of those cheerful, I-want-everything names. At Juki, items come online in drops, and we can tell you: they don't disappoint. Must have, must have, must have.
It is impossible that you haven't come across Cabinet. With their frequently recurring market, they are unmissable on social media (where many a celebrity likes to do their shopping). Cabinet is *the* new vintage and design market of Amsterdam, and five times a year, the monumental Centrale Markthal on Jan van Galenstraat transforms into a paradise full of carefully selected objects.
From vintage design classics and artworks to fashion, vinyl, and unique curiosities: every piece has its own story. While browsing the stands, you can also simply enjoy specialty coffee, snacks, and live music. The location makes it all even better: the impressive national monument from 1932 is the perfect backdrop for all that vintage beauty. The next edition is on 16 and 17 in May.
Kura Vintage sells and rents vintage tableware, glassware, and small home items: from beautiful magazine racks to everything you need for a dinner, event, party, or shoot.
Behind Kura stand Marije and Jette, two ladies who simply couldn't stop shopping at French flea markets and Dutch markets. Every cup purchased brought with it the same question, usually from the rest of the household: where do we put this? The answer was Kura. After all, why not turn a hobby that got out of hand into a business?
Are you looking for the perfect vintage find for your interior? Then Design Icons is a must. Every year, the atmospheric Kromhouthal in Amsterdam-Noord transforms into a treasure trove of vintage design, with no fewer than 75 professional dealers from across Europe under one roof.
From iconic Eames chairs to Italian lamps and rugged industrial style: the selection ranges from affordable vintage to exclusive museum pieces. The best part is that you can see, feel, and try out everything in person, and simply take it home immediately. For anyone who truly loves vintage interiors, this weekend is therefore a must-see in your calendar.
Check Selency, a kind of 'marketplace' (we hardly dare to call it that) for the most beautiful brocante, vintage and especially second home articles. There is a French and an English version – we go for the French version, the original one.
And, really don't-don't do this: follow the instagram feed! Enjoy.
Wow, what a wonderful discovery: Sit on Vintage. A delicious selection with the best design classics on-earth and that, sure and truly, is completely normal in Amstelveen! Would we like to say more about that? No. Go see for yourself. Bet you're done?
Cheerful name, cheerful stuff! For 'something different than usual' and especially more color than you are used to from most (Dutch) vintage shops, you can go to The Pearl in Rotterdam.
@useddesignholland is located in Zwolle and sometimes looks a bit more like a thrift store than the other accounts mentioned here, but make no mistake: real pearls pass by.
They live in Amsterdam Noord, Laura and Emmy, but you would think that their house is somewhere in the French countryside. For La Loueme (which stands for Laura and Emmy, but a French corruption, and they are right) they are regularly in la douce France where they can find great glassware, ceramics, lamps and more vintage beauty. It's all in the edit and if there are two who understand that, it is Laura and Emmy.
She is located on the lovely Javaplein in Amsterdam East but delivers throughout the country. What? The most beautiful Mid-Century (Scandinavian) interior items that she restores herself. Cabinets, small cupboards, sideboards, tables and a sometime chair or sofa, of the finest kind, of course. There you go! Found in Sweden
Speaking of 'renovating it yourself': you can of course employ someone to do that. Someone with taste when possible. Like Djinn (@djinnzippmeubelstoffering). This lady is a star in reupholstering the most beautiful furniture and also brings in some of her (good) taste.
Let's go Southern France, that is where the ladies do business, after all. ROE Vintage. If you are looking for a vintage pearl to brighten up your home, Roes is the right place for you. And the extra good news is: you browse and shop for it all online as well, and it gets delivered to your door. Rust Vintage.
But you will also find it nearby, about 30 minutes from Amsterdam Studio Gespuis! Great vintage selection with lots of wood and brown tones. Always cool, robust and modest, so that everything from Studio Gespuis feels like one collection - and we love! Studio Gespuis.
Also a very nice international one: Home Place Vintage. Especially a great tip for anyone who doesn't know where to start. The idea behind Home Instead Vintage was initially to promote a sustainable way of life that also looks good
However, not everyone has the time to scour flea markets and fairs, and that's where Homeplace comes in: they showcase an edited selection of ever-changing eye-catching vintage, Mid Century and retro pieces, as well as a range of well-designed and interesting contemporary items that never bore you.
You know the feeling. Making the nursery cozy again and needing a big wardrobe (just a whopper, big enough to fit everything) or an adorable vintage changing table for the arrival of your little one. Well, then you just go to Firma Zoethout, it's that simple.
Here, beautiful cabinets are sourced, restored, and given a gorgeous color. So that all you have to do is place it in the right spot in the room. Voila.
Hadn't we already announced several times that Amsterdam North is 'on'? Yes, right? Oh yes, that's true, you can read that here: the best of North.
But then we were only talking about eateries and real restaurants that populate the district. Important, fun above all, but there is more. Like the cute Treasure Depot in the Van der Pekstraat (a ferry across and always degrees Aus). The idea is simple: Treasure Depot searches, buys, refurbishes and sells again. And it does that admirably well, not only when it comes to furniture, but you've also come to the right place for some cool vintage sunglasses.
Open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10 and 17. Not on Mondays indeed, but that doesn't matter because then you can go to the Noordermarkt, if it has disappeared from your list again.
