Walks on Madeira: long or short, they are all beautiful!

Walks on Madeira: long or short, they are all beautiful!

If there is one place that is ideal for walking, it is Madeira. Flat, windy walks along the coast or sheltered under the trees through the jungle. Along the levadas or the more challenging variants from peak to peak. Some you can easily do in an hour, others will take you half or a whole day. And because Madeira is not very big, you can do several different walks during your holiday.

Typical for Madeira are 'levada hikes'. Levadas are irrigation canals that were once used to transport water from one side of the island to the other (it rains more often in the north of Madeira than in the south). Nowadays, these irrigation canals are still used for agriculture, and next to these ancient levadas there are hiking trails that show you the most beautiful places on the island.

PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço

PR8 Ponta de São Lourenço

Can we call these the most beautiful cliffs of Madeira? It is fantastically beautiful, the São Lourenço walk, let's leave it at that. Ponta de São Lourenço is located on the peninsula in the east of Madeira. You start at Ponta de São Lourenço and end at the Ponta do Furado viewpoint. Beautiful views during the entire walk, and it is not even that difficult. You can walk it in 2,5 hours (only the last part is steeper, which is tough with 25 degrees of sun on your head).

The following applies to this walk, as to several of Madeira's sights: it can be a lot busier in the morning than in the afternoon. In the afternoon it also cools down a bit and there is often a breeze, so it's a great walk. Even though this walk is not very strenuous; It's better to leave the flip-flops at home.

With many hikes on Madeira you have to walk back the same way (or you can also arrange transport). However, there are also a few that go in a circle, such as the Levada Nova & do Moinho. About half an hour from Funchal by car. On some walks you will see PR in front of it, Pequena Rota, which means short route. Says nothing at all about the length or difficulty of the walk, but indicates that it is an official route. The path is then maintained, and sometimes you will find a tent for refreshments. There's nothing better after a long, hot walk than a cold glass of beer.

PR7 Levada Nova & do Moinho

A slightly less known hike, where you... Levada Nova with Levada do Moinho combines. Many hikes on Madeira are point to point walks, which means that you always have to walk back the same way or arrange transport. However, this hike is a loop, so you will have new views every time during the entire walk. Very walkable, with virtually no height difference. The highlight is the waterfall right along the path (you can also cool off in the mist). Through tunnels, past a waterfall and with a view of all the greenery and the ocean. The Levada Nova en do Moinho walk is about half an hour's drive from Funchal.

PR6 Levada 25 Fontes & Risco waterfall hike

PR6 Levada 25 Fontes & Risco waterfall hike

The PR6 and PR6.1 are the most popular levada hikes on Madeira, and can also be easily combined with each other. The path is almost flat, so you could even do it in your flip-flops (not the most convenient, but it could be done) and therefore really easy to walk with the kids. You walk through nature to two different waterfalls. Because it is a beautiful walk, and because it is so accessible, it can also be quite busy. Starting the walk early is recommended (or later in the afternoon), then you will be ahead of (or after) the pack.

PR 11 Vereda dos Balcões

PR 11 Vereda dos Balcões

Vereda dos Balcões is a very simple, but also beautiful walk. With a bit of luck you park the car in the parking lot, but if it is already full, you park it along the road (do as the locals do). It is 1,5 kilometers to Balcões viewpoint (and 1,5 kilometers back). We walked it in our flip-flops and were back at the car after just over an hour. Before the start of the hiking trail there is a small tent where you can get coffee, beer and a boiled egg, but we would save the appetite for during the hike. After about 500 meters (or so) there is a small hut at the edge of the path, with small seats made from pallets and with views over the surroundings. Very cute, very nice.

At the viewpoint you have birds that have become so used to walkers that they sometimes come and sit on your hand or shoulder (sometimes there is a little bird seed, and that helps too).

Vereda dos Balcões is a good stop on the way to Pico do Arieiro.

PR1 Vereda do Arieiro hike

PR1 Vereda do Arieiro hike

Phew, this one is a bit spicier, the Vereda do Arieiro. Did not walk myself (did drive to the Pico do Arieiro, but it was too busy at 10:00 to find a parking spot), but recommended by other walkers. If the photos are to be believed, this walk is definitely worth it! Pico de Arieiro is a great place to watch the sunrise, but we don't visit those times on holiday, and it can be quite busy. At the peak you are above the clouds and it seems as if you can see the whole world. A six-hour walk from Pico do Arieiro to Pico das Torres and ending at Pico Ruivo, but then you also leave the majority of tourists behind you.
