Wednesday afternoon (and weekend! and (Christmas) vacation!) with the kids? A list of always good addresses and tips
Yes of course we LOVE (crazier than crazy) our little ones and yes, we definitely go out for lunch with them and go shopping and do fun things that we can appreciate ourselves - that's just the way we are. But let's be honest: sometimes those toddlers just want (and deserve) something that is really thought out and made for them. So what are we going to do? A list of Wednesday afternoon (and weekend) tips! This is what we are going to do with the toddlers on Wednesday and/or the weekend and/or during the (Christmas) vacation.
WOPL! stands for World of Play & Learning and is a creative and interactive play world with various themed zones specially designed for kids up to 8 years old. You can count on hours of entertainment. Parents can also enjoy themselves on the sunny terrace with parasols and a nice menu. Bad weather? No stress either. Most of the fun takes place indoors, and the café is also a pleasant spot for parents. Even better? On Wednesday and Friday afternoons, there are always different workshops on offer. programThink of the Science workshops in collaboration with WOW Family Centre on Fridays, an Italian picnic afternoon, or a bracelet-making workshop. And while you're browsing around, take a look around: something extra is regularly organized here during holidays, vacations, and other special occasions. It is also ideal if you are out with a group of children or have arranged to meet up with other parents. The more children, the more playmates, and the longer everyone stays entertained.
We can hardly imagine that this is really a new tip for you, but really... Nemo (and Artis) our regular go to addresses. The first one in bad weather anyway. And did you know that Nemo is already fun with little ones from about 3 years old? That's right! If we stay in Amsterdam, know that, for example, Rijksmuseum has really great promotions for little ones during the holiday periods.
When museums are really, really good, it's a pleasure to go there with the kids. They can do what they want, you can do what you want. Ying and yang and all that. Anyway, exactly as it should be (and everything but pulling because it 'has to'). It's convenient: there are more and more museums that really do their best to make it fun for the little ones. And more often than not, you'll find these museums in special places, places where you can only really get to with your shared car. And then you won't find a sad children's corner, but really fun and plenty of entertainment for the little ones. Here's your answer: the best museums with kids
Could Kindertheater De Toverknol in Amsterdam be the sweetest outing with small kids? We think so… This small-scale theater offers those wonderfully cozy afternoons and mornings where basically anything goes. Although: watching and listening to the performance is, of course, the starting point. But you arrive fifteen minutes beforehand, the kids can dive into the dressing-up closet, grab some juice and a cookie, and the party hasn't even started yet! There are various shows for different age groups so there is always something for everyone. And speaking of that 'party': you can also celebrate your birthday at De Toverknol! The birthday boy or girl is called onto the stage at the end of the performance and even receives a gift from the actors. Super exciting (and especially very fun), of course. Anyways, we are big fans. The Magic Tuber
That said: Black Cat Theater is also more than fun!
Spriet box had us at hello. That is to say; if 'hello' is the website of the Dutch brand. That website is headlined with: “Quality time with your child. More wonder. Less hassle”. That's the nail on the head. Because YES, quality time with the kids. But nooooo… No inspiration or worse: the strength to keep coming up with something new. As much as it hurts to admit that, it's just true. So if a brand 1) understands that, and 2) also has a truly and incredibly fun solution, then we would like to praise it. With this one. Spriet box is FUN!
And the implementation is simple: kids in the shared car, to the nearest forest, grab a Spiet box and you are guaranteed a great afternoon.
Yeah yeah yeah, but what IS it then? Spriet-box is a compact box (fits through the letterbox, which also makes it a super fun no-time-to-go-to-town gift) with craft activities, treasure hunt cards and even your own plants, all in the spirit of nature. And there is even a box with everything you – or actually: your little one – should know about poop. The shit Naturally. Success assured, we can tell you.
Google 'indoor playground' in your own area and you will certainly come across a number of those screeching ball pit cases. That's okay, the kids really enjoy it, but it's even more fun when it's just, well, fun for yourself. Be sure to save these three:
- Playhood, Amsterdam (read the full list here the nicest indoor playgrounds in Amsterdam) – quite remote, but you can park your shared car in front of the door: ideal!
- The Treehouse Club, The Hague
- Wonderpark cafe, Amstelveen – a really nice café for us, and a really nice (tasteful) indoor playground for the kids.
- Kidzcity, Utrecht – also one in the 'brightly colored ball pit' category, but everything here is just a little less overstimulated. And on top of that, there are quite impressive play equipment, fairground style - really fun and fun to combine with, for example Miffy Museum (really nice and well done) and/or it Railway Museum.
Okay, okay, a weekly or monthly visit to the Efteling may not be for everyone, but if you want to make the kids, and yourself, happy, then plan a visit to the iconic Brabant amusement park because, let's be honest, there are In all the years that Efteling has existed, there is still no park that surpasses the Kaatsheuvel village. All year round, moreover. And if you want to go one step further, make a weekend of it. There's really nothing as nice as spending a few nights in the domain of Klaas Often and his friends, i.e. Bosrijk, one of the holiday parks that are part of the Efteling. And immediately our favorite. The cottages on the lake are furnished just like your own home (everything is there - so nice!), but with breakfast service. Ha! And not only that: there is also a great good night service: you just have to indicate it and Klaas Often will come and tell the little ones a bedtime story in person. And then provide those children's heads with one of the nightcaps that hang in the house... It doesn't get more fun. Or at least: every day (including the arrival and departure day) you and the entire club can enter the park half an hour earlier than all other guests (avoid the lines!) and you can walk in and out as often as you want. About all the fun We don't need to say anything more at Efteling, right? Let's go! Efteling
Of course, we cannot forget the always-fun-to-visit castles in this list. So here we are! Admit it, yes you, there is nothing more fun than spending a day wandering around such a huge (mysterious) building. As a real knight, damsel, prince(ess) or duke(ess) you can taste and smell the atmosphere of castle life (that smell remains a thing) and discover together with the children what was hidden behind the castle walls.
Here you can read about our favorite ones kid proof castles in the Netherlands!
Costs nothing, hardly anyone knows and is so much fun! Sammie tells… A free (!) scavenger hunt through Amsterdam for kids from 6 years old.
From the website: “Huis Willet-Holthuysen is a beautiful 17th century canal house that is very tastefully decorated and full of the most beautiful art. Which people and animals have lived here? And what did they do in the past? Follow Sammie during this treasure hunt. There is also turtle soup on the menu, you can walk through the large garden behind the house, discover the history of the golden banister and learn much more about paintings, silver and porcelain and Louisa's green dress. Walk through all the rooms with Sammie and discover the special stories of this centuries-old building. 'Sammie tells' is also fun for adults!"
- Get the booklet park for free at the cash register of Huis Willet-Holthuysen.
- Entrance is free for children under 18.
- Language: Dutch and English
Despite the colder weather, the beach is always a good idea. Why? The beach is ALWAYS kid-proof. We love it! But we're a little extra fond of the original Strandvier in Monnickendam and the wonderful furnishings Republic of Bloemendaal in (you guessed it) Bloemendaal.
And further? You can read more about this here our favorite beach tents for colder days
Oink oink, bééehhhh, kukeleku en grunt. Once the little one manages to imitate even one of these sounds, you're stuck with it. Watching the critters! Because it remains something very special in the eyes of those children. And we think that is a spectacle. Win-win. But fortunately, as parents we still have a choice. Hello, dilemma: which petting zoo is really fun for child + parent? Don't worry!
We did the research and found the nicest petting zoos in the Netherlands.
A little playground is always open (nah yes, you get the point). De nicest playgrounds from The Netherlands (also for parents) you will find here. You're welcome again!
It is quite possible that you might raise your eyebrows for a moment while reading the title above. NetlThe wildest garden? Kraggenburg? Do we have to go to Flevoland? Get it. But yes, this really is a fantastic tip because Netl, the wildest garden, is a gigantic nature playground with a campsite the size of a hundred football fields. There is a small beach, randomly placed airplanes and other UFOs scattered here and there that kids can (and are allowed to) climb on, and there is a very relaxed beach pavilion. That is great, because apart from all the fixed amenities (as listed above), there is so much entertainment during holidays and weekends (which makes us chuckle too) for the little ones that you’ll just have another one. And another. Music? There is that too, and it gets ten points.
And that campsite? Yup, that's Camping Kallumaan
It is really no punishment to take a walk in nature. Not even during the somewhat wet, gray days. Get some fresh air, let the children run wild and enjoy the oh-so-beautiful nature. Nature near Amsterdam? Yes, there is. No, not it we all know Vondelpark or the Amsterdamse Bos. So here are three nice forests/parks near Amsterdam!
- South Kennemerland National Park – the perfect place to take an autumn walk in the forest or dunes. At the entrance you will find Kraantje Lek (great for all kinds of goodies). Be sure to have a cappuccino to go and let the children play in the playground.
- Diemerbos – this is a real urban forest (260 hectares in size) with something for everyone. Wonderful for walking, cycling, sports, playing or bird watching. There is also a play forest for the kids and you can enjoy a snack and a drink at House of Bird.
- Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes – here you can walk for hours (if the kids are okay with that), on existing roads and paths, walking routes or off road 'strolls'. Oh yes, and the tip for guaranteed spotting deer.
Addresses where every holiday is always organized:
Olmenhorst – in De Fruitloods on the grounds of Olmenhorst. You can come by every day of the week. The times and reservations? More information can be found here!
Muiderslot – Always something to do depending on the time of year Muiderslot.
A cozy café for the grown-ups with cake and coffee, while the little ones pick apples and blackberries and chase after the chickens scratching around. It might not be right around the corner, but the bike ride via Westerpark and De Bretten is well worth it. Once on location, you’ll find bushes full of berries, raspberries, and strawberries, and trees with crisp apples and sweet pears. At the entrance, you receive a basket full of containers to fill and a carton of eggs. After all, there are chickens hopping around in the orchard, and you can collect the eggs yourself. In the middle of the grounds sits the spacious little café where you can – naturally – order fresh apple juice and homemade fruit tart. Everything is, of course, completely organic, sustainable, and eco-friendly, but secretly (also) just plain delicious.
Fancy picking your own fruit finds? We understand, the fruit picking season has started with a bang at our favorite picking places. Here you will find them all together.
We often mention this as our favorite place, very often. And that has everything to do with the fact that the nice place is one of thousands where it is (invariably) possible to start a conversation and keep it going among the kids playing non-stop around you. Tap Leak it is and always will be. Outside you sit right next to an amazing playground and with your buttocks on a rattan chair with sheepskin. You won't hear us complaining. In fact: the little ones are happy, we are happy, we can easily stay here for a few hours.
As soon as the little one manages to imitate even one of the well-known animal sounds, you're stuck with it. Watching the critters! Because it remains something very special in the eyes of those children. And we think that is a spectacle. That's why we regularly pack our bags (visiting petting zoos is often an autumn/winter thing... Unwritten rule?) to visit the bunnies, donkeys, cows and goats. And the Vechtse Hoeven in Maarssen is exactly the kind of petting zoo you want, namely in the middle of a park with a terrace where you can also order a beer and bitterballen, while the children have fun on the bouncy castle or on 1 of the 100 bicycles.
In any case, we enjoy staying in the 'Gooi and Vechtstreek', with the children but certainly also without them. Nothing but fun here, promised.
We highlight Groeneveld Castle (just like the pancake house Hendrik by the way) just a little extra (ok, and also the Hoorneboeg just a little longer) because the Castle may not be on your to-do list right away, and that's a shame! The castle is a stone's throw from Amsterdam and Utrecht. Not only is it beautiful and always fun to visit, there are also all kinds of activities on a regular basis kids activities organized all year round.
Oud Valkeveen is really an incredible place cute, cozy and very nice small-scale amusement park not far from Amsterdam and Utrecht. You can do everything you can do in a 'real' large amusement park, but in a nice, clear and cuddly way - in a good way.
If you are in Brabant, then Pukkemuk (and your day can't get any worse!) in Dongen also a great tip and also at Sprookjeswonderland In Enkhuizen the whole bunch (from about 3/4 years old) will have a great time.
A museum boring? Not at all, but you've come to the wrong place at this museum. It Railway Museum Utrecht is more than just a museum. It’s not about statically looking at trains (although that is of course possible too), but about doing, seeing, and experiencing. The Railway Museum has pulled out all the stops to let everyone discover, in every possible interactive way, how the train has changed the world. A small example: you literally walk through trains. There are also attractions and a simulator. As the icing on the cake, you go in search of all the railway animals that live close to the tracks.
So even if you're not a train expert, or haven't been collecting trains since you were little, everyone has a great time here. Let's take the train to the Railway Museum in Utrecht.
The Miffy Museum in Utrecht back in business in a brand new and twice as large jacket. Step into your own childhood memories and the colorful world of Miffy and her friends. This is the place where kids can let their imaginations run wild and go on a journey of discovery as young adventurers. The museum has a lot of themed rooms and interactive surprises. From exhibitions to activities such as: building, dressing up, painting and even a 360-degree projection room. Sufficient incentives!
The museum is designed for different age groups but also for children with disabilities. It is wheelchair accessible and all senses have been taken into account: scent boxes, color contrasts, tactile materials, embossed games and explanations in Dutch Sign Language (crazy!). Drink a cup of coffee in the cozy museum café and take a look in the museum shop for the real thing collectibles.
It thunders and lightnings and it rains meters… of water. Sometimes you have days like that. Raindrops tapping against the windows and water trickling from the gutters. And sometimes those days come as a gift; lounging on the couch and staying in the warmth and coziness of the house all day long. But. But with kids… Sigh. Then things are often a little different. Although we are quite used to this these days.Prepared. With what? With the very best (you wish that you could be a child again for a while) rain entertainment ever.
Have you always wanted to sleep in a real airplane, a large birdhouse, a giant ostrich or a gypsy wagon? Bee The Strange Bird So in Vlaardingen, they do exactly that. And yes, that is – naturally – especially fun for little kids. But it is also immediately really, really fun.
The children's paradise called De Vreemde Vogel is, however, a truly lovely place for those over 21 to spend time as well. Parents can relax in a hammock (plenty of books and magazines available to borrow) or on the (covered) terrace by the water. You can pick out a record for the turntable in your outdoor room at the LP lending service, and in the shop, you can buy unique items for your home. And yes, you can visit without staying overnight: De Vreemde Vogel is open on Saturdays and Sundays (and every day during holidays) for lunch and drinks. Oh, and this is also really fun. With children aged 6 and up, you can go on real treasure hunts. do.
Hello the Achterhoek! You would easily overlook this part of the Netherlands that touches Germany. Shame, right? Ever heard of it The Chicken Family? You want it. A farm for six to ten people in the middle of the greenery in the Achterhoek. The farm is located on a large piece of land surrounded by large trees and two ponds. And: your four-legged friend can come along.
Ah, the Iron Man, that is tough youth sentiment for the undersigned. This natural lake is by no means something new. No, a lifetime ago skinnydipping we were already there. It was all the greater the surprise when we turned up there again almost thirty years later and the Iron Man of our youth was nowhere to be seen. We were in a good place, right? But yes, well, if we were okay with that. The puddle got what you call a upgrade in the form of a genuine beach pavilion, De IJzeren Man Vught, and—dear Brabanders who haven't been to the IJzeren Man in years—it is absolutely top-notch. Large, cozy terraces (yes, plural), multiple bars (we are in Brabant, after all), a huge conservatory for when the weather isn't quite so great (the IJzeren Man is, in principle, open 365 days a year), an outdoor swimming pool, and a climbing center. A children's paradise, then, I hear you thinking. That isn't entirely untrue, but it is a bit of an oversimplification: one of the reasons we are so charmed by the place is because it truly caters to everyone. From bottle-warming convenience to multiple bottles in an evening, so to speak. See you soon, childhood nostalgia; we’ll have another round.
A handsome duo this: both places are quite family-friendly (for the whole family, not just the kids) and just really nice. And both in Zeeland. The name of The greenhouse tells you right away what to expect: a catering location was created in and around a greenhouse. Chickens scratch around the fruit trees in the garden and if it rains (it is still autumn), the drops patter on the windows of the greenhouse - very cozy and it is a bonus that you can actually sit inside just as nicely as in the garden. For the little ones, a corner of the garden was set up as a (tasteful) playground, there are all kinds of reading and activity books with the theme 'gardening' and a play kitchen was set up at the back of the wooden extension. Everything is prepared with a lot of love and you can taste it; everything that is served in the greenhouse and tea garden comes from the greenhouse, the garden or the area.
You will also find a large nature and play farm in the middle of the Zeeland landscape, just outside the small village of Grijpskerke (near Goes): Hof Pop. There are bouncy castles, a sandbox and trampolines. Bunnies hop through and around the 'experience garden' and there are attractive seating areas for young and old. There is even an old caravan to climb in and through.
During the weekend we look forward to the weekend and outside the weekend we look forward to the weekend even more. And late The Blacksmith's Garden in (just outside) Leiden now laid back lazy sunday shouting, even on a weekday. Let us sketch such a day for you: park your car just before the bridge. Where a cycle path starts and the motorway ends, after a short walk of half a kilometer you arrive at your destination: The Garden of the Blacksmith. A lovely estate with animals everywhere: horses, ponies, bleating sheep, lots of chickens clucking and pigs rolling in the mud opposite the coop with pheasants and other poultry. Nice already. But there is more, namely: The Garden of the Smidkas. Here you can drink delicious coffee, eat finger-licking cakes and have an extensive lunch.
You will find Brasserie To the Dobben in the Hurdegarypsterwarren nature reserve – don't worry, we can't pronounce it either and ultimately that's not what it's all about. After all, the most important thing is the place and how we feel there. Here it was joy that predominated and for this reason. First of all, that unpronounceable place is simply a picture to look at. The area is a patchwork of fields, grasslands, trees and flowers in which all kinds of animals frolic around. There are countless walking and cycling tours to follow and in certain areas you can even go off the beaten track to wander around and pick flowers and blackberries. You don't have to tell us that twice. The second and equally important point is that the Brasserie itself is a nice place to settle down before or after the tour (or both). The coffee is good and the cake slices are large. For the kids there is a screened playing field with wooden play equipment and there are goats walking around that can be petted.
A villa! A bistro! An outdoor playground! A boutique hotel! Green, Maastricht around the corner and only just opened. We actually approve of everything about Villa Kanjel. The playground was built from wooden poles, is located in the middle of nature (no cars or other danger in sight - and yes, there is a fence around the water) and was the first part to receive the stamp 'finished' by the people behind Villa Kanjel . The terrace gets ten points, the playground eleven, the food and reasonable prices at least nine and a half points. The rest of the renovation plans for the monumental villa continued steadily, resulting in a tasteful boutique hotel with a handful of rooms in the Limburg greenery. Above all, the rooms had to be spacious so that there was room for everyone and no additional rooms had to be booked (due to the annoyance of the owner, who had experienced this all too often). And there is plenty of room for the children to run wild in the evening while the parents catch their breath.
Bonus points for wonderful Maastricht just around the corner. Read more: Bart's best of Maastricht
