Chilling out on Sundays like the locals in São Vicente, Cape Verde

The sunday is holy in Cape Verde. Not only the day before church, but especially for the chill. No agendas, no rush (not that they know that here). A Sunday on São Vicente is therefore all about family, fish, vinyl and otherwise: doing very little. Doing as the locals do? We give a glimpse into their Sunday planning.

At this bay, Sunday is all about togetherness, food and music. Families and groups of friends go all out: they lug their music box, preferably the biggest one they own, and their barbecues on the beach of Baia das Gatas up. Fathers grill fish, aunts dance with grogue (a local rum) in their hands, the children jump into the water and the beer is cold in the cooler.

Pebble is a bit more remote on the island of São Vicente and is therefore quieter. When you arrive here, it feels like you have entered an empty village from a western movie, but then in a desert setting. Like this quiet. Until you come restaurant Hamburg arrives. Aha, there are the people. The restaurant has an extensive and good menu and they do not know small portions: the plate is filled here. After a plate full of fresh fish or grilled meat you are so full that dinner is probably unnecessary.

Do you have your own transportation and need some peace and quiet? Then drive towards Big beach on the east coast. A vast beach, few people, only the sea rolling and the wind blowing. Sometimes you see fishermen coming ashore with their boat, or families seeking peace with a cool box and a radio. The perfect Sunday for those who only want to hear the sound of the ocean and nothing else.

Also in Mindelo you can easily entertain yourself on Sunday. Rua de Libertad d'Africa, one of the main streets of the city, is the slow center. The street used to be known as Rua Lisboa and is called locals still called that. You see elderly people there ouril playing (a local board game), children riding bikes on the sidewalk and neighbors taking the time to chat. Everything breathes the Cape Verdean Sunday vibe. In the meantime, treat yourself to a coffee and end your stroll at the Palácio do Povo, the pink people's palace that is the calling card of the city.
