The perfect hideaway on the west coast of Scotland has to be Kilmartin Castle near Lochgilphead. A sixteenth-century castle in a beautiful, dramatic landscape with all the comforts and luxuries of today. In the style of the time, but with fun details (such as the neon sign in the Dining Room, peacock wallpaper and the portrait of Frank, the castle cat) and with a service that was in the times of the past. yore wouldn't be out of place. Whichever of the four bedrooms you choose (or rent the entire castle): one laird or a counters you are as soon as you step foot over the threshold.

Location, location, location
You will find Kilmartin Castle on the wild and unspoilt west coast of Scotland, in Argyll & Bute. For more than 500 years, this castle has stood proudly at the beginning of the Kilmartin Glen, a valley carved out by the glaciers of the last Ice Age. Layers of rich history (think standing stones for Outlander fans, burial mounds, medieval stone carvings and even petroglyphs of the first inhabitants of Scotland). You are a three-minute walk from the Kilmartin Hotel with a nice pub and monthly changes guest ales and a good whiskey list, there is a sweet museum with a tearoom and if you come by car (recommended), you really can't stop having fun. An hour's drive and you will find yourself in Oban for all your whiskey fantasies, Tayvallich for fresh and locally caught fish and the harbor village of Crinan is less than a ten-minute drive away. There you will find the smallest lighthouse we have ever seen, a good pub and several walks around the village.
The eye wants something too
Poe, where do we start? The castle has been renovated as much as possible in all its former glory, but of course with all modern conveniences (indoor plumbing – such a nice invention). No small plastic soap bottles, but vintage ceramic pots with fair trade shampoo, reused and upcycled wooden details (or an entire seating area, they can also do that) and almost everything you see has been found at small, local thrift shops and completely refurbished. The shared living room has spacious sofas, soft rugs and – how cozy – a wood-burning stove. There is a beautiful outdoor area with kitchen, an orchard and a vegetable garden. Much of what you are served for breakfast also comes from there.

Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome, but kids under 12 can stay over while mom and dad drink all the wine.
