The most beautiful sights on São Nicolau, Cape Verde

Planning a trip to Cape Verde? Then you absolutely can't miss the island of São Nicolau. You won't find luxury resorts like on Sal here. What will you find? Ridiculously beautiful nature, an underwater paradise, and the authentic culture of Cape Verde. An island full of beautiful places, but handy with our to do list about the island: full of rugged nature, hidden bays, hikes, pure island culture and the most beautiful sights on São Nicolau, Cape Verde.

More about Cape Verde

The natural spectacle of Carbeirinho

The natural spectacle of Carbeirinho

Carbeirinho is one of the magical places on the island. This Cape Verdean version of the Grand Canyon is an impressive surprise on the island's northwest coast. This natural spectacle is thousands of years old and definitely not to be missed. With a rental car, you can drive all the way to the wooden steps leading to the rock face. If you take a bus from Tarrafal, you'll be dropped off at the beginning of a winding path. From there, you walk through the grasslands where you'll encounter freely grazing cows and enjoy views of the peaks of Monte Gordo. Even more special: you'll hardly encounter anyone here. Oh, and our tip? Come here to watch the sunset. It's beautiful.

Fishing village of Tarrafal, São Nicolau

Fishing village of Tarrafal, São Nicolau

The fishing village of Tarrafal is small but bustling, with a constant stream of fishing boats coming to sell their fresh catch on the streets and in restaurants. From the beaches further north in the bay, you can easily swim to a beautiful snorkeling spot. With a bit of luck, you might spot turtles and the (harmless) nurse shark.

Enjoy lunch at the family-run restaurants Bia or Raio d'Sol, where they'll fill your table with local dishes for a fixed price. From Tarrafal, you can also easily take a taxi or bus to the other hotspots on this list. Great, because you won't need that much time here.

Lagoa tidal pools

Lagoa tidal pools

We have been recommending them for some time now: a visit to tidal pools – the natural swimming pools by the sea. At Lagoa on São Nicolau, they aren't very warm, but they are a unique way to cool off on this hot island. Just like at Carbeirinho, you'll be dropped off here and reach your destination via a ten-minute walk along a winding path. There you'll find naturally formed pools where you can swim. Bring a snorkel, watch out for sea urchins (you either want the rugged scenery or you don't), and check the tide to experience a real "swimming pool" effect (at low tide, that is). At high tide, the rocks are also submerged.

Mountain village Ribeira Brava

Mountain village Ribeira Brava

Besides its impressive natural beauty, São Nicolau also boasts a few cultural attractions: the mountain village of Ribeira Brava. This small village's colonial past is undeniable; its colorful buildings and narrow streets contrast sharply with Tarrafal, thanks to the Portuguese presence on the island in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Soak up the tranquil village life in the central square, explore the small shops and restaurants, and visit the local market. Ribeira Brava, as a mountain village, is a perfect attraction to combine with walks in the surrounding countryside.

Walk in the national park

Walk in the national park

A visit to São Nicolau isn't complete without a beautiful hike. You can walk for miles along beaches and to mountain peaks. Looking for a unique challenge? Ask specifically at the office at the entrance to the National Park about the yellow trail. In three hours, you'll hike through conifers, flower fields, aloe vera forests, lemon groves, and past small farms. Along the way, you'll see locals harvesting with the help of donkeys and enjoy views of the rest of the island.
