Okay, admittedly: on Bonaire, everything is a bit within somersaulting distance, but still, after a long flight, it's just really nice to walk right into your hotel. For Bonaire connoisseurs: Bougainvillea is your first stop at the end of Donkey Beach. There. That's about the location.
Behind Bougainvillea Hotel Bonaire sits an enterprising duo with a clear love for the island. Denise Choufoer and Rob van Werkhoven gave shape to their dream on Bonaire and opened this hotel here just a year ago. Together with Restaurant Flora (and the Bougainvillea Apartments – follow the link!With that, they have created a place that has already found its way on Bonaire.
The small-scale Bougainvillea may be compact, but everything has been thought of. A restaurant, plenty of spots to sunbathe and relax, a beautiful (and extensive!) wine collection, plus a swimming pool for the necessary cooling off. The rooms are fresh, sleek, and well-air-conditioned, with spacious bathrooms that invite you to a long, lazy shower session. Shower on, salt off, done. There is even a private beach access for a spontaneous dip in the sea and hours of frolicking in the water. In theory. In practice: a dip, onto a sunbed, and grab a book.
Not to forget: on Saturday you can join yoga classes, if you like folding yourself into a pretzel.
Small-scale, then, but spaciously laid out. The rooms are scattered across the grounds, ensuring you always have a sense of peace and privacy. For instance, the two sea-view rooms are situated somewhat more secluded, with their own small terrace and the sea right in front of you.
And let's be honest: they've really got it all figured out at Bougainvillea. Because with the sea as a neighbor, you automatically have an edge here. Right by the sea, every evening. front row at sunset. Just as beautiful in the morning, but then we are still asleep.
There is something to do at any time of day. No beach club crowds, a bit of hustle and bustle, but above all a tranquil pace. Exactly how a holiday should be.
A little extra love for Restaurant Flora. The place where you are served a tasty breakfast in the morning, from croissants to eggs any way and pancakes (which wouldn't look out of place in an American diner). The best part: you can just pull up a chair here again in the afternoon and evening. And then you’ll see: ordering is the hardest part here. For lunch, we highly recommend the meat-style sandwich: sweet and sour vegetables, crispy onions, and a bit of a mess. Add a glass of Chardonnay on the side, and you’ll be licking your fingers.
In the evening, Flora shifts up to another level. You can choose from a 3-, 4-, or 5-course menu where you compose the dishes yourself (choose the langoustine. exclamation mark.), or go for something to share such as a fish or Sirloin Black Angus, accompanied by a generous portion of fries and salad.
The staff is knowledgeable and warm; they know their products and know exactly when your glass needs refilling. With a spot by the sea, attentive service, and delicious food, you're in luck here.
