5 x the most beautiful calanques of Cassis, France
Long live France! France is a favorite holiday destination, but if you think you have all to the en outs now you know... Think again. Because there is so much more to discover. Such as a picturesque coastal town including a beautiful harbor. Get on a boat and let's go to the most beautiful calanques that you've ever seen. Promise. Excuse me, what? A cove (Of calanche as they are called in Corsican) is a geographical inlet in the form of a deep valley with steep slopes and partly immersed in the sea. So says Wikipedia. Ah. Anyway, 5 x the most beautiful calanques in Cassis. It's coming.
Maybe you already knew it, but port pin literally means pine gate. It is therefore not surprising that this bay is surrounded by pine trees and other flora and fauna, which gives the place a romantic appearance. Here you will find both a sandy beach and a pebble beach, both of which have a... breathtaking have a view of the azure blue sea. You walk in via a stone quarry in Port Miou no time to this piece of paradise.
This cove can be found near bustling Marseille. The walk down has a view over the nature park that, as a true Frenchman, will immediately make you say an ooh la la. A place with high rocks that protrude above the water and spectacular nature where you can completely relax. And admittedly, that doesn't sound bad. During that walk down you will come across a viewpoint that, among other things, overlooks cove de Sormieu, which you will find just a stone's throw away. Bring a picnic basket and snacks let's go beach day!
This is the most famous cove near Marseille. The nice thing about this one cove is that this is also one of the least inhabited calanques is. You will find only a few fishermen's houses and two restaurants here. Calanque de Sormieu has a super beautiful sandy beach surrounded by nature and high cliffs around you. There is a walking path on top of the cliff with a beautiful view of the sea. Perhaps even more fun is that just a stone's throw from Calanque de Sormieu is the sea cave of Casquer, which is painted with prehistoric murals.
To get here, you have to take a long walk, but it is more than worth it. Promise. Because you will then be standing on the pebble beach with the clearest turquoise water (trust us), which makes you immediately want to take a cooling dip. Oh and if you look around you, you might see a boar passing by. They often come to the water and swim among the tourists, ha!
Last, but certainly not least. You will find this place closest to the town of Cassis. In addition to the fishing port, you will also encounter a greener part here. There is no beach here, but you can sit on the rocks and enjoy the weather and the beautiful sea. This calanque is actually a nice starting point for walking to calanque de Port-pin and to d'En Veau. Tip du jour: rent a kayak!
You can of course also visit the beaches in Cassis. Like one of these for example.
- Grande Mer Beach – In the middle of the city, near the harbor you will find the city beach. Take a dip in this sheltered bay, rent a pedal boat, or do nothing at all while the little ones are playing. Very good.
- Plage du Bestouan – This stone beach looks a bit more like one adults only beach. You can rent sun loungers here or have something to eat and drink at the beach bar. The locals also like to come to this beach.
- Plage de l'Arène – A less busy beach, but that's actually not a problem at all. Because you can enjoy peace and quiet here. But… Just to be safe, bring water shoes, because it is not the easiest place to take a dip.
- Plage du Carton – After a fifteen minute walk from the harbor you arrive at this beautiful beach. This part is quite rocky, but you can snorkel well here. Nice!
