Jodelahiehoe, Innsbruck: tips for city and winter sports

Innsbruck? jawohl, Innsbruck. The city of Christmas markets, of strolling along the river, of sitting in the Stube, of real Tyrolean dishes, but also of surprisingly good bento boxes at the train station, city of architecture, of museums, of winter sports and city of terraces, of beer and Aperol Spritz, of sweet pastry and savory sausage.

Innsbruck is for the active person who jumps out of bed for a walk in the mountains or a trip on the skis. Innsbruck is also for the stroller, the terrace hopper. For the culture addict, for the tree-hugger and for the hip student. It should be clear: Innsbruck is great for everyone and if you haven't been there yet, you really should go very very soon. And so nice: Transavia flies to Innsbruck several times a day from several airports in the Netherlands.

Winter sports in Innsbruck

Winter sports in Innsbruck

There is a good chance that you have landed on this page because you love winter sports and want to do that around Innsbruck. Good news: within a few hours you can fly to Innsbruck and within about six hours you can be on the slopes from home. Within fifteen minutes from the airport you can be on your skis, and the large ski areas in Tyrol can be reached within an hour and a half.

With the SKI plus CITY Pass you get access to 13 ski areas around Innsbruck and the Stubaital (also 23 sights, attractions and a swimming pool, more about that later). Which ski areas you should not miss:

  • The Patscherkofel, 6,5 kilometres from Innsbruck and accessible by free ski bus. The slopes are varied and at 1.900 metres there is a freestyle park.
  • The Axamer Lizum is the place to be for freeride and freestyle fans, but also ideal for families.
  • The Nordkette can be reached by gondola from the centre. Not so big, but good freeriders can let loose on the descent through the Karrinne with a gradient of 70 percent.
  • Kühtai is located high up and therefore has guaranteed snow until April.
  • Muttereralm is also a few kilometres away and is especially popular with beginners and children.

About the SKI plus CITY Pass, you also have access to 23 super fun sights, attractions and a swimming pool. What are the best?

  • Kaiserliche Hofburg Innsbruck: this is one of the most important cultural buildings in Austria, together with the Wiener Hofburg and Schloss Schönbrunn in Vienna. The hundreds of exhibitions are fun and the building picture-perfect.
  • House with the Golden Roof and City Church: symbols in the city and real eye-catchers.
  • Hofgarten: a green oasis in Innsbruck. Ideal for a picnic in the summer.
  • Ambras Castle: the oldest museum in the world.
  • Swarovski Crystal Worlds: treasure chambers, a garden and countless crystals. A bit commercial and touristy, but beautiful.

Although we must secretly admit that the entire city centre is an attraction in itself.

Ok, ok, ok: on to the eating, sleeping and drinking.

Hotel Das Innsbruck

Hotel Das Innsbruck

Starting with where to sleep. We do have some requirements. Did someone say that we want a hotel with the best spa in Innsbruck? Then you end up at Hotel Das Innsbruck. And if you want a hotel right in the city, then you also end up at Hotel Innsbruck. It is a gigantic hotel and you notice that (there are parties regularly: from companies or whatever), but the service and the restaurant maintain the quality. You have the spa upstairs in the hotel and the swimming pool downstairs and that is gigantic.

The rooms either look out over the mountains or the city (both nice and therefore difficult to choose). It is quiet (with well-insulated rooms) and cozy. The rooms are neat and the beds super comfortable.

Coffee and pastries in the city

Coffee and pastries in the city

Hip types in Innsbruck and you can guess that it is full of coffee bars. They are good and nice and that is why we list a few with all our love. For the to go coffee, but also for in between strolling to let the legs rest.

Here they are:

  • La Pausa: for really good coffee and Italian breakfast options.
  • Breakfast Club: the name suggests that this is mainly the place for hip types.
  • Heapinest: for the very best banana bread.
  • Café Momo: hidden away but with a cozy courtyard.
  • Carafu: all things pistachio. Awesome.
  • Brennpunkt coffee: a bit out of the centre, but really good coffee.

Tribaun

Tribaun

Beergeek alert, because people who don't like the drink of the gods have little business here. Or rather, because there really is something tasty for everyone. With eighteen beers on tap, there is quite a bit to taste, but luckily you get help from the friendly bartenders and bartenders. Do you want malty, hoppy, sweet, fruity, maybe even sour? So that's all possible. Don't feel like talking about beer so much, no problem, because then you just order one flight of bear – four small tasting glasses on a shelf, so you don't have to rush home straight away. The food is not necessarily very inspiring, but it is just a great pubfood: burgers, hot dogs and pizza, we don't spit on them.

The poacher

The poacher

A bit by accident we are up The poacher stumbled upon it, and what a party that was. Small cozy tent, a piano is in the middle of the restaurant and is a table (yes really. It doesn't sit far, but it looks nice) and the staff is really friendly and knows how to answer all your questions about the wine and food menu. Because Die Wilderin (think kind of a wild primeval woman standing in the middle of nature) cooks with the season, the menu changes regularly and you can go there as often as you want. One of the dishes that they do have on the menu is the steak tartare and that is a good thing. Very nice wine list (go for the Zweigelt, a red wine from Austria, thoroughly enjoyed).

The dishes are all Austrian fare (from the beers to the horse meat. Yes, it's tasty), but with a modern twist. We really appreciated those slabs of schnitzel and gigantic portions potato salad are really too much after a few days. Also nice: they have a Wall of Fame with Polaroids on the large wall. Of course you want that.

Make sure to book in advance, because it is tiny and very popular. The poacher.

Nala Individuall Hotel

Nala Individuall Hotel

We've been writing all the time about what you can do in Innsbruck, but now we come up with the Nala Individuall Hotel and you don't really want to leave there. Just stop looking and comparing with other hotels, because they don't come close. They have the nicest rooms (all unique – individually): bath with mega screen – the baddercines, or a cute attic room with a crazy staircase to your bed or a room with a golden mosaic wall for the rock stars among us. Ok, so the rooms are fantastic, but ultimately your morning depends on the breakfast buffet and they have arranged that down to the last detail. If you think of it, it's there, and if you haven't thought of it yet, it's there. The Nala Hotel focuses very much on green and eco, and you see this everywhere: at breakfast, but also in your room (no miniature soaps, but large bottles of organic shampoo) and on the communal roof terraces where there are plants everywhere and the sun shines most of the day.

So there is only one thing you can do: book an extra night so you can get to it Nala Individuall Hotel can chill a lot.

Restaurant Oniriq

Restaurant Oniriq

If you want to splurge on your trip to Innsbruck, we highly recommend Oniriq. This is Innsbruck’s most stylish restaurant, with pale wood, speckled concrete and a contemporary kitchen almost in the middle of the place. It’s not big, with just a handful of tables. The chef, Udo Herrmann, together with the sous chef and the sommelier/waiter, ensure a cosy atmosphere and that nothing is missing from the tasting menus. À la carte is not an option.

The food is seasonal and regional. Some of it even comes from the backyard. The wine pairings are a feast, with wines from Austrian houses, but also from further afield.

A celebration and a real upgrade for your holiday to Innsbruck.

Restaurant Oniriq

From Innsbruck you can easily take the free ski bus to one of the nine (!) ski slopes.
