Charging an electric car in the Netherlands: this is how the rates differ
You're going up soon city trip within the Netherlands? With an electric car? Then you will probably charge the car one or more times in between. It is useful to keep in mind that the rates for charging your battery differ per municipality. There is therefore a chance that you will pay more along the way or at your destination than you are used to in your own municipality. We are good at looking after the little ones. That is why this article provides a short and powerful explanation of where you pay more, and more importantly: which places are the cheapest to charge your electric car.
Charging on the street is often the cheapest. The comparison site Independer investigated the charging rates in the Netherlands and came to interesting conclusions. For example, there are quite big differences depending on where you are going to charge. Per public charging point you can spend more or less money, up to a difference of a few tens per charge. And hey, that's another round of beer or getting some ice cream at the place of your getaway.
For a charging point on the street you pay an average of €0,36 per kWh, while charging in an underground parking garage costs €0,42 per kWh. In a car park or in a regular parking garage you pay €0,41 per kWh. The difference in price for a full battery can therefore be high. To keep costs as low as possible, it is generally best to charge at a parking spot on the street.
Depending on where your city trip goes, you pay a different rate at the charging station. In the city of Utrecht you pay by far the most of all major cities, on average € 0,59 per kWh. The Hague (€ 0,27) and Rotterdam (€ 0,29) are on average half cheaper. In Amsterdam it also makes a big difference to the wallet compared to Utrecht: € 0,40 per kWh. Amsterdam is therefore not the most expensive in everything.
In many other major cities it is also a lot cheaper than in Utrecht. Do you already know where your city trip is going, or are you still unsure? Check the list below for the different rates per kWh. If you want to spend the least amount of money, it is best to plan a visit to Nijmegen, The Hague of Rotterdam. And now there are also very nice cities for a weekend away!

Want a weekend away in a smaller town or in a rural area? Good for your charging balance, because the major cities do not have the lowest charging station rates in the Netherlands. You pay the least in various Overijssel and Gelderland municipalities. And in Overijssel en Gelderland you will find some great places for a road trip!
In Overijssel, Losser, Staphorst (€ 0,25), Olst-Wijhe and Hof van Twente (€ 0,26) cost the least for a full battery, at about a quarter per kWh. These rates also apply to Gelderland municipalities West Maas and Waal (€ 0,25), Tiel, Westervoort, Overbetuwe, Maasdriel and Rheden (all € 0,26).
So be well prepared for your trip by checking the charging rates in advance. What else is useful to check carefully in advance is your car insurance. See what is (and is not) covered and whether this still suits your situation and wishes. Having to deal with a financial setback in the event of a breakdown is very sad.
