Country estate and restaurant Klooster Nieuw Sion, between Wesepe and Diepenveen (near Deventer)

Hidden in the woods between Wesepe and Diepenveen (near Deventer) you will find Klooster Nieuw Sion. Traditionally this has been a farmers' monastery, but today the country estate is still in full use. Not only by the community that lives there (the monks have now left), but also for other (less religious) purposes such as a catering facility and a beer brewery. Look, and then you have our attention... On to the country estate and restaurant Klooster Nieuw Sion.

Monastery New Zion

Monastery New Zion

Choosing this non-obvious option after a walk at Kranenkamp Estate is a great plan if you like peace and simplicity. On New Zion you can visit the guest garden, the monastery church or even better: the Coffee House.

The latter is located in an originally traditional outdoor chapel that was converted in May 2021 into a nice place for coffee, a tasty lunch with ingredients from our own vegetable garden and a thick piece of cake. You can now even sit down for dinner there.

Don't expect a fat one beats and vlogging influencers, but if you are not a believer you can sit here. Sun, rest, monastery beer…. Sounds almost like paradise, doesn't it?

On the menu you will mainly find vegetarian dishes. From the traditional salad with goat cheese to oyster mushroom croquettes from Brans Deventer and Grilled pepper soup.

Nice weather? Then quickly move to a spot on the terrace in the beautiful monastery garden. Lush flowers, beautiful mowed paths and a dreamy pond. It is good to know: this may not be the best tip for (with) children: the garden in the courtyard of the monastery is called 'the whispering garden'. Screaming prohibited. You really can't miss that: there is a serene tranquility around and in the monastery.

Contrary to what the website suggests (sorry for stereotyping), the site, but especially the gift shop, is dressed in a trendy coat. Don't expect a fat one beats and vlogging influencers, but if you are not a believer you can sit here. Sun, rest, monastery beer…. Sounds almost like paradise, doesn't it?

And one more thing about that beer... In the monastery they live in the belief that all good things take time. So does the beer. Traditional monastery recipes, in combination with the country's own hops and grain and the purest Overijssel water, are brought together to create beers without any fuss. Through crowdfunding (see, cool coat!) they were able to bottle the first beers. Plus: after a day in New Zion you can simply order it online for your home!

Still not feeling enough rest after this day? You can also sleep in the monastery. To come to yourself for a moment. Or just to escape from screaming kids at home, that too.
