A game drive with kids about 2 hours from Cape Town? It's possible! Melozhori, Stormsvlei, South Africa.
It is—hold on tight—less than a 2,5-hour drive from Cape Town and you are at the amazing Melozhori Private Game Resort in Stormsvlei, South Africa. And even that 2,5-hour drive is no punishment: you stop at Pyjamas and Jam for lunch and before you know it, you are suddenly in the middle of nature. With the kids, indeed. Unforgettable? You bet! For a change, absolutely no 'shall we grab lunch somewhere?' or 'what are we going to do?' But mountains, silence, and zebras and giraffes among the bushes. Hey hello Melozhori Private Game Reserve! Can we stay?
The Melozhori Private Game Reserve is located in the Overberg on a private reserve of over 2300 hectares. Rolling hills, endless views, wildlife, starry skies and accommodations that are so beautiful and lovely that you actually never want to leave.
The reserve is malaria-free and without dangerous predators, good to know, Which makes it perfect for families with small children, too. And that is why we were here! Because oh man, it is hard to find a really cool way to take the little ones to see the Big Animals without driving too far from Cape Town and the Winelands. But it turns out you can.
In that case (so with kids), you sleep in the Family Cottage. Exactly the kind of cottage where you immediately think: okay, we want to stay here longer. This is home. Upon arrival, literally everything is already ready for you, provided you indicated this in advance – tip: do!! The fridge is well stocked for pizza night and braai night, fresh croissants, bread, eggs from our own farm, plenty of snacks, hot chocolate with marshmallows and even chocolate fondant for the family (for two evenings). The kind of place where they clearly understand that parents on vacation really only want one thing: to stop thinking about anything.
And then the house itself. Two bedrooms, one with a separate children's area with twin beds. A lovely living room with a fireplace, TV (sometimes an hour of Netflix is simply a vacation), and a kitchen with a dishwasher, oven, microwave, and coffee maker.
The very best part? Outside. Because there is a complete outdoor kitchen there with a pizza oven, braai, a large table for long evenings, a boma for marshmallows and stories under the stars, and a hot tub with an amazing view of the mountains. Allow for a warm-up time of an hour or two, but after that? Your children will be lost for hours. And as if that wasn't enough: there are hammocks on the veranda (a huge hit with everyone), a plunge pool and at one point four horses that just walked past the cottage. Do you have a horse girl at home? Book. This. Right.
10 points, already, and we haven't even started yet. Because what Melozhori What perhaps makes it even nicer is that you automatically slow down here. No hopping between coffee shops (after all, there aren't any). No rush. In the middle of nature, you suddenly have different conversations. You are more in the moment. More together. And the safari departs at 9 a.m. the next morning. No classic 'four hours of sitting still in a jeep while your toddler slowly 'derails' safari'. No, this game drive lasts about two hours, making it truly perfect for families with young children, even with a baby. Actually, it is exactly the ideal first safari if you don't want to fly all the way to Kruger (or to another place on the Garden Route) right away.
Along the way, you will spot zebras, giraffes, various antelope species, and with a little luck, many more. wildlife. Melozhori is home to more than 35 animal species and over 120 bird species, all nestled amidst that impressive Overberg landscape. Another nice feature: the reserve is small-scale. There are only a few accommodations, spaced far apart, giving you the real feeling that you are alone in the world. No crowds. No hustle and bustle. Just nature and peace.
In addition to the Family Cottage, Melozhori also has eco pods, a treehouse, and a larger lodge that all look at least as amazing (we want to go back!). Perfect for a weekend with friends, a romantic getaway or families with older children. This is one of those places you actually want to experience in every season.
