Olé, new in De Pijp: Cabrón Amsterdam
Olé olé, the Mexican tents are popping up like mushrooms, and we're okay with that. Hopefully a trend that stays, because it is feel-good food. And that one feel good food vibe also depends a bit on the brand new Dumbass. A new Mexican in De Pijp that has been open for two weeks.
We ended up here by chance. What? Chance? We hear you thinking, but yes, we too sometimes wander through the city (now De Pijp) and do things on spec. What happens then? Well, not much else except that you can conclude that it is not wise, because Hunger, because Amsterdam, because Hunger (with a capital H).
Finally any Amsterdam was sitting on the terraces there and so we were a bit late. And then you're forced to go in somewhere because you think, so! Beautiful color on that facade. And that map looks damn good. So, we ended (or started) at the bar Dumbass. A fairly small map (literally and figuratively) with all the good things Mexico has to offer. You need two to three meals per person to be satisfied. In our case you eat three per person.
Tacos are next Dumbass (very new in Amsterdam) as the main item on the menu. But also a Mexican stew, for example. We went for the shrimp cocktail, soft shell crab tacos and carnitas tacos (the latter was recommended to us, certainly not a disappointment). Add a beer and that's it quiet en chill. Cabrón was founded by three Mexico fanatics. Have they been to Mexico? No, not (strikingly so). But they really wanted to go… Aha. Okay.
There are also all kinds vegan things on the menu. We entered into it (sorry, not vegan here). We tried the taco with vegan cheese and blueberries (we think... Why would you eat 'cheese' if it isn't cheese? Or is that just us?). The berries made up for it (nice and sweet!). We also skipped the vegan brownie. It was quite full and we noticed that from the acoustics (which were not great). If that didn't spoil the fun, the cozy bar and the very friendly staff made up for a lot. The bar of Dumbass is really the center of the matter. The Holy Mary stares at you and there are candles around it (nice and cozy). The open kitchen allows you to occasionally make contact with the chefs (co-founders). Two men who are cooking passionately and with pleasure. So Mexican style. As if they had been there themselves. We'll be back Cabron.
