From Reformed Protestant church to ruins and then renovated and returned to its full glory. What can we say: even better than its former glory. Now we hear you thinking: like what? As a restaurant of course, and Ambrosia is the name. If you want to go to Ambrozijn – and that seems like a great plan to us – then you have to travel to the south of the country. Valkenburg to be precise. In the open kitchen, chef Sven Nijenhuis, together with his brigade, prepares the most beautiful dishes for you. At the interactive Chef's Table you can literally see what happens to the products step by step. What you see is what you get! French oriented, but with a twist: exactly what we hope for when we go for the full experiencee and fine dining. Something special. From the moment you enter, let yourself be oh-so-deliciously pampered with the glass of bubbles that is thrust into your hand (in the good sense of the word, of course). Fine dining in a former church, what did we think? Well, everything except this, so here's something background, information. What is now the beautiful restaurant Ambrozijn used to be a Reformed Protestant church: the Irene Church. At one point (around 1970) the church was no longer used for services and was thus transformed into a catering facility. There were several restaurants there until a major fire broke out in 2018. The entire church went up in flames and was completely destroyed inside and out. After the fire, the church was completely renovated in 2021, but the exterior was returned to its original state as much as possible. The inside has been completely renovated and transformed into the beautiful Ambrozijn restaurant. The design of the Irene Church is attributed to the famous architect Pierre Cuypers, known for, among other things, the Rijksmuseum. The outside is still that incredibly beautiful church that it was, the inside has been completely renovated: brand new, but with the old elements from back then. A golden combination. The blackened walls, which are still visible, are a remnant of the great fire and contrast with the soft, luxurious materials used for the furniture. And that contrast works like a charm.
Whether you sit at the Chef's Table downstairs or the cozy setting upstairs: you can enjoy a great meal at both. They love food here. That's okay, so are we. What do they serve? Mouth-watering dishes: from poached oysters to hamachi (a special Japanese fish) and roe deer, everything with a twist and farm-fresh. Of course you can also book a wine arrangement (win-win). Add to that delicious food the unique location (we call 'church', hilly South Limburg and the center: location location location), the beautiful interior and the extremely friendly service and you know where your next fine-dining trip will go. Ambrozijn in Valkenburg is the place to be.
