The best (surfing) beaches around Cape Town
Cape Town is known for its beautiful surroundings, fine wines (and vineyards), a colorful mix of cultures that you encounter on the streets and on your plate, and beaches where you can just as easily laze around as catch some waves.
We'll dive into the latter with the one and only surf brand: REEF. REEF isn’t just a brand – it’s surf culture in shoe and flip-flop form. Long-time pro surfer sponsors and deeply rooted in the surf scene from day one, these guys have been around for over 40 years.
The laid back vibe, the feeling of sand under your feet, the smell of sunscreen and salt in your hair. Yes, that is exactly what you feel/see/experience on these wonderful beaches around Cape Town.
All your favorites around Cape Town? We'll save those for the (really) fun ebooks we've written about it: Cool Cape Town City and Cool Cape Town Surroundings. You can shop them here.
Kommetjie beach is definitely on your list must visit list. Vast and wonderfully quiet – ideal for a long walk on the beach. And you are not alone: every morning you see locals (often with dogs) strolling across the sand. There is also a nice walkway along the coastline in case you prefer sneakers rather than bare feet.
Don't expect beach chairs or trendy beach bars here, but pure nature: sand, sea and sun. What Kommetjie does have are a few surf shops (including the necessary bleached surf dudes), good coffee at Good Riddance Coffee Co, a brekkie bun at AndRoc's Mobile Kitchen on the beach and a pizzeria. Enough to keep you busy for a day. No, this is not Camps Bay. This is laid-back, low-key luxury. Fancy surfer town, and nothing more.
For the surf it depends a bit on the day. On average days you can easily get into the water here as an intermediate or reasonably experienced beginner. Unless the swell really gets going…
With REEF you can't go wrong. Think: brightly colored slides, flip-flops with an ultra-comfy cushion sole (seriously, they're so comfortable) and leather platform sandals.
These are our favorites:
Colorful flip flops
Platform slippers made of leather
The ultra-comfy cushion sole
Beautiful platform sandals
Just order them via the European website – so point eu at the end – then you will receive them quickly.
Okay, are you a beginner? This is the place. More surf shops than restaurants, although there are also plenty of nice bars and eateries for after your session or during your day at the beach. Here you can easily book a lesson, but also get into the water yourself. You can walk into the sea, grab without (too much) effort the whitewash and you can (especially with high tide) stay long cruising. Walk back, catch next wave, repeat.
Even the more experienced surfer will get his money's worth here with long longboard waves. Yes, those are those extra long boards. In the coffee shops you can hear the enthusiastic cheering from the water. Everyone happy, everyone sharing. Happy vibes all around.
And another advantage: the water here is a lot warmer than on the west side. So also ideal for a dive in the water without a board.
You may know the REEF slipper especially from (surfing) men, because they have the iconic flip-flop with a beer opener in the sole. And no, not an uncharming souvenir, but just a stylish model that you can wear from the beach to the bar. They also have those for men with a lovely cushion sole that you like to walk on indoors as well as outdoors. Psst. these are great Father's Day or birthday gifts!
Our favourites:
Classy waterproof flip-flop
The one and only beer opener slipper
Leather slide 'Birkie-style'
This mega long beach is a must. At the beach exit everyone sits together, but because the beach is so long and wide, there is always enough space. So no stress if you bring a speaker. We also like to quietly read a book here.
At the exit you can surf (spot: Noordhoek), but if you fancy less people in the water, take a brisk walk (think: 30 to 45 minutes), then the Dunes spot awaits you there. Experts only. Not really a place to laze around - apart from some fanatic surfers there is little to do. Better to stay at the beach entrance.
Of course, you also need to eat and drink. And then you are in the right place at Noordhoek. Less than a minute's drive (so: easy to walk from the beach) car park) you will find a lovely courtyard. Think: burgers and (crazy) beer at Aegir Project brewery (definitely go for the smash burger and sit upstairs for the view), a slightly refined Mediterranean cuisine with a good glass of wine Furny Fine Wines, or the high rated Limoncello – for duh, Italian.
Llandudno Beach is a hidden gem just outside Cape Town – quiet, with that typical locals only vibe and a view to frame. Think: giant boulders, powdery white sand and ice cold (really ice cold) water. The perfect spot for a picnic, sunset and a good surf show. No catering here, so bring your own snack (and a bottle of wine).
Surfing is for experts only: short paddle in (which saves time for the surfers) and therefore perfect for watching surfers who catch the waves here as if it were nothing.
Clifton beach has not one, not two but four beaches. No surf here, the beaches are beautiful separated. In our Cool Cape Town book you can read more about this. In any case a big recommendation here you will find all tips about Cape Town city and surroundings. Find our very own Cape Town Bible here!
