Backline Babes

Backline Babes

The idea came from Emma Horner, a Muizenberg local since the sea stole her heart. When she's not on her board, you can find her outdoors: mountain biking, camping, anything that requires fresh air and exercise. And if that's not enough, Emma also works as a clinical dietitian in both a government and private hospital.

But even for an ocean lover like Emma, the step to the backline was daunting. Surfing can be intimidating, especially in a lineup often dominated by men who have long mastered the game. From the beach, she watched her partner (Western Province longboarder, no less) catch the waves, while she mainly thought: I want that tooThat familiar surf itch had to go somewhere. And so the seed for Backline Babes was planted.

There is now a strong group of women who support each other, share knowledge, learn together and, above all, have a blast. Enjoy better waves, progress, that moment when you surf past a friend and hear a loud noise from the other side of the wave. yewwww! sounds.

At Emma's side is Kirstie, Her friend since day one of high school, Kirstie is a creative soul: a freelance graphic designer, Creative Director at Future Females, and someone who effortlessly brings people and ideas together. Entrepreneurship and female empowerment are in her DNA, so when Emma came up with the idea for a surfing community, the answer was obvious: bright yes.

Together they make a rock-solid duo. Outdoorsy and social butterflies. Just as happy in a wetsuit as dressed up for an event.

Backline Babes isn't about being the best surfer. It's about daring to go. About paddling together, falling, laughing, and getting back up. About taking up space in the ocean and beyond. A community that shows there's a place for everyone on the backline.
