Bar Misera in Antwerp Nieuw-Zuid is atmospheric, very tasty, a bit casual and above all beautiful
Rarely a fan of shared dining—our choice, our plate, hands off your branches—but we're slowly drifting away from our faith. A major driving force (along with the incredibly enjoyable Café Commercial in the same city, but that's beside the point) is the recent Antwerp discovery Bar Misera, not to be confused with the Michelin-starred restaurant Misera, although owned by the same owner.
Think of Bar Misera as a relaxed, no-nonsense alternative to that Michelin-starred restaurant, a wine bar with tasty bites that you can just walk into.

Well, let's just say it's nothing special: owners Nicolas Misera and Yasmin Weyn create a relaxed, international bistro atmosphere, but when the food arrives, you're left speechless – oh, what gems.
You have absolutely no idea of this when you arrive in Antwerp's Nieuw-Zuid district, a blocky, wind-tunnel-like neighborhood reminiscent of the unsexy Zuidas business district. But anyway, step inside, and all that is quickly forgotten. Mignon Half-bar curtains obscure the view from the outside, while inside it's a pleasant mix of classic bistro elements—marble tables, attractive signs with their own fish-on-legs logo (give us a set!), two old round wooden tables with vintage chairs—and modern design, such as the olive green bar, orange-red tiled kitchen, and metal designer lamps. It's atmospheric, a bit casual, and charmingly charming—lovely.
Sommelier Trésor Vets (now thought to be one of Antwerp's best) is responsible for the wine menu, with many by the glass, including a superb orange and a wonderful selection of non-alcoholic drinks.
And then those bites, those dishes that now make us want to share, eager to taste everything: simple, yet refined to perfection. Just as mouthwatering: a creamy straciatella with tomato and spicy salty anchovies and pickled red onion, followed by raw tuna with sweet cherries and shiso, a ceviche to dream of. Then a slightly larger Creations with buttery soft and tender beef with thick pepper sauce, fluffy Potatoes Dauphines and a simple lettuce, perfectly dressed with a classic French dressing and pistachios. Love, love, love. Next time, try the rösti with sour cream and caviar. And the mussels with vadouvan. And the oysters with homemade pickles. And… well, everything, really, although all those dishes quickly add up to a hefty bill. Wasn't that what we complained about on shared dining? Believe me, we did. But it's totally worth it; this is a new favorite.

Want to make a day of it in Antwerp? Have coffee and homemade cake at the relaxed cassette, with vintage furniture and record player, or with the somewhat messy Norm in the micro-roastery. Refuel with something sweet at plant-based Bakery Funk – always queues on weekends – and lunch with Belgian fries at the chip shop Arré on the Sint-Jansvliet, the small square in front of the beautiful Sint-Annatunnel that leads you to the left bank. Arré has a mean pepper sauce and a spicy and sour pickle with pickles and onions, perfect with their hot, crispy fries. In between, drooling over paper, pens, and stationery at Wunderkammer of the Stad Leest bookstore and then an aperitif and dinner at Bar Misera, so.
