Bar Staal (by Vooges) Amsterdam: the Vooges family settles on the Schinkel
Bar Staal by Vooges opened fairly quietly on June 1st on Rijnsburgstraat in Amsterdam-West, aka the Schinkelbuurt. And it was really time for something lively to return! A lovely spot by the water in a building that has been standing for sixty years, run by the Vooges family, who know exactly what they are doing.
Rolf and Mischa Vooges built a reputation over more than a quarter of a century with warm, informal neighborhood establishments. At Bar Staal, they are partly passing the baton: their twin sons Tim and Daan (24) are at the helm here. Fresh blood, yet with all the experience. Together they run the business as a family company, which we like. Whereas the earlier Vooges establishments were mainly neighborhood restaurants, Tim and Daan have opted here for a combination of hospitality, workspaces, and events. Smart move: the location, the Staal-Kade building, already has many workspaces, a business club, and space for larger groups. Furthermore, Bar Staal is a all-day Business in the literal sense: coffee is ready from half past eight, and from twelve o'clock onwards, one menu applies for the rest of the day. A simple idea that works surprisingly well in practice. No complicated constructions on that menu, just the kind of dishes that make you happy and that you order a second time.
The terrace is situated right by the water at the Schinkel, surrounded by lots of greenery. YES. Inside, the characterful building has been transformed into something that feels light and open in the summer and cozy during the winter months. YES. And it is once again such a really good place for large groups (and families). Bar Steel
