FINCH Boutique Hotel, Deventer

On the banks of the IJssel, close to the Veluwe, the Achterhoek, and the Sallandse Heuvelrug, and with an array of incredibly cozy pubs, good restaurants, take-home shops, and lovely terraces: the Hanseatic city of Deventer! FINCH Boutique Hotel It is located in a national monument and has very comfortable beds, beautiful and playful rooms (with those fun details). And Finch has all sorts of nice little extras that just add that extra bit of flair. The Finch Wine Hour, for example (every day between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM), and a clear menu with all kinds of tasty treats that you can order all day long. From granola to focaccia toasties, sweet pastries, and even a Festive Brunch for when you spontaneously get in the mood. Oh, and Bar Finch. Incredibly stylish little nooks to sit in, and of course, you do that with a delicious cocktail (or a wine, that's good too). And then there's the terrace; we'll definitely be sitting there this summer. Best of all: you'll find a mix of locals and tourists there, and it is relaxed luxury at its best.

Location, location, location

You don't have to do anything about that anymore, that location. On the edge of the historic city center and you can stroll straight into the Rijsterborgher Park, where you will find the very nice Bird Island. Commotion and conviviality and a bit of greenery on your doorstep: all the ingredients for a week(end) of fun! Less than ten minutes away you will find Restaurant Arsenaal, classic dishes made from local products and with a light Mediterranean twist. Another recommendation is The Lemon Tree. Really fine dining, but the prices are still very reasonable. The lemon tree in the middle of the shop is the obvious eye-catcher (although the creations on your plate certainly are too!). Deventer certainly has plenty of choice of good coffee shops (Flotte Deventer has a good bakery and very nice stuff for the home), restaurants, boutiques, shops and also a wide range of nice terraces. You can find one of those nice terraces – or beer gardens – at DAVO. Located at the bottom of Deventer, right on the water of the IJssel and they serve a great beer there. For museum goers there is of course the ECIAS or Museum More in Gorssel.

The eye wants something too

Playful, cheerful, and with those old-school details that, when viewed from the left, almost feel a bit like Speak Easy (but less dark and a bit more cheerful), while when viewed from the other side, it feels more like you've stepped into a curio shop. FINCH is whimsical, unique, and certainly not like home, yet it feels a bit like it. Luxurious, in an adventurous way rather than static. Old-fashioned rotary telephones on the wall alongside a pop-art poster, tall windows for all that Overijssel sunlight, and original beams that betray the history of the building. And we haven't even mentioned the rooms yet, all equally chic and full of luxury. Did we mention lovely beds with linens, a rain shower, a record player with a selection of records (yes, spinning records in the room it is!), a Nespresso machine, and for when you want to collapse into bed after a day in Deventer, you can enjoy Netflix on the Chromecast.
