(Relatively) budget-proof hotels in New York – these are our favorite options

Of course we all want to New York, The Big Apple, The City That Never Sleeps, The Concrete Jungle and the most iconic metropolis on earth. But hey, we're not Scrooge McDuck. We can just about find a ticket for an okay price, but where will we stay? Airbnb? Possible, but we love hotels so much. From the comfort, from the locations, from the 'we are people of the world' feeling we get there. And having your dirty laundry picked up from the floor also helps. And don't think that it is nearly impossible to find such an address for a (reasonably) reasonable price: it is possible!

These are our favorite hotels in New York, and most of them are reasonably/relatively cheap! (price-quality people, price-quality)

And if you book right away, don't forget your ESTA Authorization to request! Otherwise you will have a lot of hassle at customs and you will not be able to enter the country. That would be a shame. You can apply here: e-visums.nl

Arlo SoHo

Arlo SoHo

Kicking off this list: the Arlo hotel group. There are several of them in New York, and actually, things are going well everywhere. Arlo SoHo is favorite: The rooms are small – 15 m² to be precise (which is fairly normal for Manhattan), but the people at Arlo have made good use of the space and haven't compromised on comfort. It is spotlessly clean with comfortable, fresh bedding, but the real highlight is the view – book a sky room if you can: that means two of your floor-to-ceiling walls are made of glass, giving you a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline. Awesome. The same goes for the location: awesome. To sum it up: perfect location, perfect bed, perfect view. And the rest is secondary. Oh, by the way, the roof terrace is also a very good place for a drink before or after dinner. Arlo SoHo

Where can you find those other Arlo locations? Arlo NoMad, Arlo Midtown en Arlo Williamsburg are your search terms.

Through Booking.com you can not only book hotels, but also choose from a wide range of accommodations, such as apartments, Bed & Breakfasts, luxury villas, houseboats, cozy holiday homes, forest houses and many more unique accommodations.

Romer's Hells Kitchen

Romer's Hells Kitchen

Romer Hells Kitchen The hotel in the Hells Kitchen district is also a top-notch one. A neighborhood that is a bit inbetween is, but precisely because of that, it is also close to everything. Moreover, Romer's Hells Kitchen is very kid proof. Urban vibes most cozy comfort. The interior is funky and the staff helpful. The family rooms are a very decent size and when the kids are asleep, you can still go up to the roof terrace. Romer Hells Kitchen

The Cloud One New York-Downtown

The Cloud One New York-Downtown

You can book The Cloud One New York-Downtown on a good night for less than two hundred, (almost) a bargain by New York standards. The nice thing about The Cloud is the moodyA pleasant lounge where you can just plop down after a day exploring the city. In the morning, an extensive American breakfast is ready, including, of course, a tower of pancakes. The rooms are clean and sleekly furnished. In Barts Boekje terms: no unnecessary luxury, just a good bed and a steady night's sleep.

The Ludlow Hotel New York

The Ludlow Hotel New York

Ugh, how we like The Ludlow Hotel. A nice variety of leather, warm tones and wood, with even a fireplace, fills the hotel.

And here too, the higher the room, the better. Good, better, best and for the latter, book a room with a bath (plus a view over the city). The rooftop has a fantastic view.

Around the corner is Katz's for the very best and world-famous pastrami.

Ps: know that The Ludlow can sometimes – suddenly – be booked for next to nothing. No idea how it's possible, but we slept there for 100 dollars a night. Ha!

The Moore, Chelsea

The Moore, Chelsea

If you're into warm, minimalist chic, The Moore in Chelsea is a must-visit. And step out the door and you'll be right on the HighLine (you know, that park on an old railroad track) and/or Chelsea Market (you know, that indoor food hall). The Meatpacking District (yes please: From there it's a nice route to Greenwich Village (aka The Village) and the Whitney Museum (one of the nicest museums in the city).

UNTITLED at 3 Freeman Alley

UNTITLED at 3 Freeman Alley

You don't expect it but in a dark doggy alley in the Lower East Side (if you read this article, you will read that we really like to stay in this corner of the city: from here you are immediately in SoHo in one direction, and in the other direction you cycle over the Williamsburg Bridge to the best of Brooklyn), you will find a creative-cool and affordable hotel: UNTITLED at 3 Freeman Alley. Bonus points for the option to get pierced or tattooed here, in the hotel. Typical case of 'thank us later' because you probably wouldn't have found this yourself…

Cilvilian Hotel

Cilvilian Hotel

If you look closely, there is a lot to it Civilian Hotel It's not quite there (just a little too many frills here and there), but if you squint a bit, you'll see a cool, old-chic hotel in that characteristic New York style. You'll find The Civilian Hotel in the heart of the city, a stone's throw from Central Park and Times Square. An added bonus is the pleasant rooftop terrace, the bar, and the cozy restaurant downstairs. And here too, the rule applies: with a lucky day you're done here for 100 euros. Especially in the case of last minute books.

Ace hotel

Ace hotel

Again: the key a budget-proof hotel requires luck and booking on time. Such is the case with the Ace hotel chain. Two chances, because there are two hotels of the chain located in New York. The newest one can be found on the corner of Schermerhorn and Bond in Brooklyn - near the nice Boerum Hill. It is within walking distance of The Brooklyn Bridge, Fort Greene Park, The Brooklyn Academy of Music and more. Mega hip spot for the Big Apple connoisseur. The hotel in Brooklyn is large and therefore affordable.

The other Ace hotel in Manhattan is also spot on. On weekends the hotel goes crazy with local DJs in the lobby.

Wyndham Hotels

Wyndham Hotels

A different treasure in every town, thousands of them Wyndham Hotels & Resorts in more than 95 countries. It is therefore not surprising that there are many of them in New York (and many are also quite affordable!). So it is Wyndham Garden Brooklyn Sunset Park, where you can secure a hotel room for around a hundred dollars a night (provided you book in time) (on an average day, you will spend an average of 200 euros per night). Not just any room, mind you, but a room just two streets away from Sunset Park, where you can see one of the best views of Manhattan. If you want to treat yourself, book one of the rooms with a fantastic view of Manhattan. A real gift to yourself.

Radio Hotel

Radio Hotel

A color bomb from the outside and nice and minimalist from the inside: that's what we're talking about Radio Hotel in Washington Heights. A clean hotel with comfortable beds and, most importantly, good value for money.

Hoxton Williamsburg

Hoxton Williamsburg

Admittedly: you have to be a bit lucky / plan far in advance because if you get a bedroom at the very last minute Hoxton in the very nice Williamsburg (that's a lot of dashes on the e, we know, but want to book something with superlatives and such), then there is little chance that you will actually sleep for next to nothing. The solution(s): 1) plan now and book well in advance, 2) wait until the hotel has another one of their famous sales (they have!) and then strike immediately, 3) just do a single night, and reserve the other nights in one of the other affordable hotels on this list. If you hotel hop in a city, your vacation always seems to last twice as long.

The Freehand

The Freehand

This is SUCH a favorite too! The Freehand we still 'know' it out Miami. The hotel/hostel is great there, but in New York they went a step further, it seems. You find the creative, bubbly hotel in the Flatiron district (you know, that building shaped like an iron: hence flat-iron), in a beautiful historic building. Inside it is artistic, dark & . It is definitely the place in town if you want to have a drink and dance to really nice music (HITS!) among the hip (nice) types in the evening and the location - the previously somewhat 'nothing' Flarington District where it is now booming - is also not at all wrong. Definitely take an evening for The Broken Shaker (roof terrace) and the restaurant on the ground floor. Party.

Orchard Street Hotel

Orchard Street Hotel

Speaking of favorite neighborhoods: Williamsburg, yes, Greenwich, for sure, but LES (Lower East Side) and especially Elisabeth Street (NoLiTa) are also my favorites. Orchard Street is a bit of a 'forgotten' street and right there you will find a perfectly fine nothing-to-do hotel. So at that top spot. Fresh, sleek, nothing-to-happen rooms with wonderful beds, great views (!) and low prices. Have fun!

Made Hotel, NoMad

Made Hotel, NoMad

A great find, and definitely the place where we'll rest our heads (and feet) on the next trip is the MADE Hotel in NoMad: 600 meters from the Empire State Building and a TOP location for firsttime New Yorkers.

Walker Hotel Tribeca

Walker Hotel Tribeca

Walker Hotel Tribeca is located right on the edge of Chinatown, and that means: everything fun is within walking distance. From affordable and good food to public transport around the corner, making the rest of the city easily accessible as well. The rooms? Small but mighty. At around 14 m² – as we now know: quite normal here – it feels more like a smart sleeping nook than a classic hotel room. But it is a comfortable one, with everything you need for a good night's sleep. Upstairs, a lovely rooftop bar awaits, and in the basement, there is a speakeasy with jazz: dark, hidden, and a nice extra surprise from your hotel. You can find another Walker Hotel in Greenwich: Link? Here you go.

The Nolitan Hotel

The Nolitan Hotel

New York explore like a local? Then you want to make it your home for a few days (read: preferably forever). The Nolitan Hotel in Nolita. The location of this boutique hotel is great: in downtown Manhattan and within walking distance of Chinatown, Central Park and SoHo. The rooms are affordable (keep New York standards in mind) and offer everything you need. You can also eat well here (very nice).

And also take a look at these hotels:

  • All POD hotels! There are four of them in town and they are all absolutely fine.
  • Don't do it if it's your first time in New York because it's (beautiful) BORO Hotel It is in Queens and that is close to uh… nothing. But if you already know the city and you know how the metro system works, you won't be scared of having to change trains an extra time.
