The best reading books from team Barts Boekje

Off to bed, off to bed... Washing, brushing teeth, and reading a children's book before bed. We're certainly not the only ones who practice this ritual at home. Every night, 365 days a year, wherever we are on earth. Well, yeah. give or take a few. That's nice, but sometimes it also takes a bit of searching because... Which story are we going to read again today? Yes, the little one is completely fine with the same thing night after night, but we also like to keep it fun ourselves, thank you very much. Enjoy these: The best reading books from team Barts Boekje.

The Dry

The Dry

A cheerful, exciting, and funny story for both young and old children is Das Droog and the Case of Little Penguin. It's fun to read aloud or read independently. It's part one of a brand-new series of children's books featuring animals. The book is about Das Droog, a detective for BIBS (Animals in Extraordinary Situations), and her sidekick Lee, a clever mitten crab. Together they search for the missing sister of the penguins with whom they travel the world. The Dry €16

Part 2 will be released in the spring of 2026.

The Knight Without Buttocks

The Knight Without Buttocks

Another gem: the Knight without buttocks! Pardon me? Yes, of course. And no boys or girls find that butt humor funny at all.
Once upon a time there was a knight… with no bottom! / There was once a knight with no bottom / Who was sad, because he would most like / to become a prince, and not for a little while, but for a long and happy life. / A fairy-tale solution is obvious,
which brings him to his dream princess.

That's a taste of more. What a coincidence: there's a successor: the Prince without a buttocks! Same characters, easily recognizable, yet a slightly different story. The book rhymes, which we find so much more enjoyable to read aloud. €17

The thick, special book

The thick, special book

To be honest, we fell in love with the beautiful cover of this book series. But then we discovered that children love the beautiful pictures and fascinating facts in the books. And that the books are packed with information that's fun for both children and parents. Enjoy reading and learning together.

The big book of our special universe

Currently, these are Vito's, Elvis', and our own favorite books:

  • The Lion in the Mouse – because every brave mouse has a scared lion inside him, and vice versa.
  • The Yellow Balloon – but then the big book! You also have a smaller version, which is also fun, but not nearly as exciting as a book that is almost as big as yourself. Each page has so much to see. And then look for the balloon. And the prison crook, and the giraffe, and the blue car…
  • Sleep well – simple can be so brilliant. In a sober spread you always read a (desperate) appeal on the left and on the right what the boy has now come up with to postpone sleeping. When you turn the page, you discover how the room, drawn in black and white, is flooded with color by the excuse.

Get the Stars – your own child is the star of the story. You can personalize this book, how nice is that! A story about the stars and making your dreams come true. Learn kids to follow their hearts and that you can achieve anything you want. If you just keep believing... The sky's the limit!

De little prince The classic and fun for young and old.

Pick from the Petteflet Do we need to say more?

Everything from publisher Christopher. As Winter stories with magical stories from other cultures, from North America to Siberia, China and Scotland. Or it The Wonderful Book of Mythical Creatures, with ancient knowledge about mythical animals.

Jorien's favorite books

Jorien's favorite books

Blown away – is clearly number one. It's a comical picture book about a penguin who flies a kite to a tropical island. It's the debut novel by American illustrator Rob Biddulph.

Boet de Beer – at number 2, also with a dot. Boet is the only brown bear who can't hibernate. The large, collage-like illustrations clearly show how the bear tosses and turns, finding it all rather boring in their shared bear den.

A Polar Bear in the Tropics Lars, the little polar bear, drifts away from his white Arctic world on an ice floe and arrives in a land where everything is green. He sees strange plants and flowers and meets animals he hasn't seen before. But how will he get back home?

Goofy – Nostalgia! Everyone knows Floddertje by Annie MG Smidt, right?

Never bring a bear to school – When Hannah first started school, this was the book.

Michel and Renske's favorite reading books

Michel and Renske's favorite reading books

Farmer Boris – all adventures of Farmer Boris are cool!

Frog – the children's classic that everyone probably knows, and that is simply very well done.

Dickie Dick – Vito has this too! Speaking of classics... There is also one that comes with a DVD. Because everyone loves that crazy fat cat.

The Most Beautiful Fish in the Sea – Rainbow is the most beautiful fish in the sea. But he is proud and vain, and because of that he has no friends. Only when he gives away one of his beautiful scales – and more later – do they like him.

Guess how much I love you = secretly also a favorite of mom and dad, because the illustrations are so beautiful and the message is so sweet.

A Leo like Leonard – another book by Ed Vere, always a winner (the Lion in the Mouse is also his. This time it is about the sweet lion Leonard. Leonard writes poems and makes friends with a duck. But the other lions do not accept that…

De Harry Potter series. Classics and still a hit with young and old. Anoek had never read the books herself, but it is all the more fun to now read them to her son.

The explorer. When Fred flies above the Amazon with three other children and an old pilot, he is amazed. If only he could land in the jungle for a moment. Not much later, the pilot has a heart attack and the plane crashes. The four children have to survive by eating larvae and tarantulas. They rescue a baby sloth and climb trees and build a raft. Then they discover that they may not be alone...
